Book excerpt: Sunshine, warmth, lemon blossom . . . Springtime in glorious Southern Italy can go to your head. Especially if you are escaping an overbearing husband, the embarrassingly public loss of your company, an interfering mother who still tries to run your life or the pain of a husband's affair with a girl young enough to be his daughter. As the Italian sun ripens the lemons in the groves that tumble down the hillsides and the Mediterranean dazzles beneath them, assertive Angela, extrovert Sylvie, unconfident Claire and mousy Monica find burgeoning friendship and begin to blossom in quite unexpected ways. Packed with memorable characters – from the acid-tongued Grand Old Man of Modern Art who lives next door – to the aspiring gigolo who thinks nothing of a forty year age gap, Maeve Haran's An Italian Holiday is a witty and entertaining reminder of why going a little mad in the sun can sometimes be exactly what you need.

Italy was Bluebell's dream destination, but taking her granny's place on the Loving and Knitting magazine competition holiday she'd won wasn't quite what she'd had in mind. For one thing she didn't knit and for the other...well being single probably discounted her from the love category too. But a free holiday is a free holiday and it's the perfect escape from her lacklustre life. Michela didn't think she'd be returning home to the Amalfi Coast so soon but a new job at her cousin's restaurant on the harbour of Positano is a dream gig, miles away from the grey London clouds. This time though, she vowed not to fall into old habits, Stefano was the past and now a bright future beckons. But under the Italian skies a whole host of possibilities await and maybe happy-ever-after is just a plane ride away... *** Readers are loving The Italian Holiday! And he also tells us a story -- a tale of people of all generations who leave home each year to return to a familiar place that is close to their hearts, where they pursue the very same holiday rituals year in and year out: Miss Rimini for one short summer season, a passionate kiss on the beach, nightly parties in the bars and restaurants, the joyful exuberance of youthful cliques seeking to experience everything life offers nowhere else in just a few short weeks and to forget what everyday life is. With his concentrated, atmospheric images, which bear the imprint of a fascinated, passionate observer, Claude Nori succeeds masterfully in capturing that mixture of Mediterranean lifestyle and carefree holiday spirit that awakens memories and longings in us all.

Book excerpt: Raised Italian-American remembers the history, stories, traditions, and values of growing up in an Italian neighborhood. One of my fondest memories as a child was to take a ride and view the beautiful nativity scenes that were erected throughout the neighborhood each Christmas. The popularity of these large statues, they are called presepi in Italy, started in Italy in the 17th century when it was fashionable to find them in palaces and homes of wealthy citizens. The newfound enthusiasm of erecting a presepi during Christmas may be contributed to Saint Gaetano who openly encouraged people to create the presepi as a sign of devotion. It wasn't until the later part of the 19th century that these presepi became a part of family traditions in nearly every home in Italy. This set is a beautiful piece of art and is a prized possession of the families that own them. I know that Phyllis' grandmother cherished her presepi until the day she died and the family still think fondly of their grandmother every time they see it at Christmas time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring essays by twelve prominent American literature scholars, Roman Holidaysexplores the tradition of American travel to Italy and makes a significant contribution to the understanding of nineteenth-century American encounters with Italian culture and, more specifically, with Rome. The increase in American travel to Italy during the nineteenth century was partly a product of improved conditions of travel. As suggested in the title, Italy served nineteenth-century writers and artists as a kind of laboratory site for encountering Others and “other” kinds of experience. No doubt Italy offered a place of holiday—a momentary escape from the familiar—but the journey to Rome, a place urging upon the visitor a new and more complex sense of history, also forced a reexamination of oneself and one's identity. Writers and artists found their religious, political, and sexual assumptions challenged. Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Marble Faun has a prominent place in this collection: as Henry James commented in his study of Hawthorne, the book was “part of the intellectual equipment of the Anglo-Saxon visitor to Rome.” The essayists also examine works by James, Fuller, Melville, Douglass, Howells, and other writers as well as such sculptors as Hiram Powers, William Wetmore Story, and Harriet Hosmer. Bringing contemporary concerns about gender, race, and class to bear upon nineteenth-century texts, Roman Holidays is an especially timely contribution to nineteenth-century American studies.

Book excerpt: "After losing the love of her life in a tragic accident, thirty-year-old Gina is struggling. Running her little guesthouse in the hills of the Lake District keeps her going, but her heart isn't in it any more. When new guest, Fabio Garcia, arrives, Gina feels a spark that reminds her she's alive. He's tall, dark but with startling blue eyes, and makes her laugh, for the first time in... forever. Guilt holds her back, but friends, and a glass (or three) of wine, push her into his arms. It's nothing serious, which, Gina realises, is exactly what she needs, so when he invites her to his family's crumbling Italian villa, on the sparkling waters of Lake Como, she says yes. It's hard not to fall for the grand, sandstone Villa Lucia, its faded wallpaper, green shutters, and Fabio, serving fresh coffee in bed. But Gina knows where she belongs, and she's just not ready to explore the hidden depths she discovers in this handsome Italian. Just when Gina thinks she might change her mind, his sister reveals a secret that sends Gina packing. And it's a relief. Because she was right not to open her heart to Fabio, to walk away from him, the villa, the moonlit lake... Wasn't she?" -- Provided by publisher.
