Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Gardens of Italy: How to Visit Them During the dark ages that succeeded it is un likely that anyone maintained or laid out villas, and even in the sixteenth century, that golden time of art, we meet with no gardens south of Rome, The topiarius was the slave entrusted with the difficult and responsible task of clipping the hedges and designing and keeping in shape the various animals represented in box and other shrubs and the clipped inscriptions. These were very elaborate, but happily the custom was so modified in the best xvith century gardens that except in three cases where the name of the villa is cut in box, the writer has never seen any topiary work in Italy that could be objected to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Making of Gardens: Being a Study of Old Italian Gardens, of the Nature of Beauty, and the Principles Involved in Garden Design I intended to publish with this essay another on the history of the garden during the Dark Ages, but here again Time, against whom I am beginning to have serious grounds of complaint, has been too much for me. However, so far as matter is concerned it is complete, and I hope to issue it in the autumn. Every one who has travelled in Italy appreciates the courtesy and kindness shown by Italians to strangers of all nationalities perhaps one would not be wrong in saying more especially to Englishmen. Since I first began in the early 'nineties to study old Italian gardens I have visited more than two hundred in all parts of the country, and I cannot sufficiently express my thanks to the owners. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fans of Edith Wharton simply must read Italian Villas and Their Gardens, which is considered the novelist's first published work. Century Magazine commissioned Wharton to write a series of articles on Italian villas and gardens. She then went on a four-month tour of Italy, which is described in loving detail in Italian Villas and Their Gardens. Wharton's articles are accompanied by 26 illustrations by painter Maxfield Parrish, whose dreamlike scenes transport the reader to scenic Italy. The book gives a detailed history of Italian garden architecture and ornamentation by exploring over 75 villas. Wharton expertly describes the magic of these traditional gardens and explains the relationship between the local countryside, the villas and their formal gardens. Wharton was one of the first writers to take the study of formal gardens as seriously as other forms of art and architecture, and Italian Villas and Their Gardens influenced generations of landscape artists and writers. As any devoted reader of The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth knows, Wharton's novels always contain intricate descriptions of houses, gardens and decor. She used descriptions of houses and their surroundings as expressions of her characters' inner struggles. Wharton had a passion for European culture and she displays quite a command of Italian garden architecture in Italian Villas and Their Gardens. The themes of Wharton's fiction typically include journeys or travels or displacement. Cultural tensions also figure prominently, whether they are between new conventions and old traditions, or between European mores and American ways. These same concerns are intimated in Italian Villas and Their Gardens, which is a travelogue containing beautiful descriptions of an Italian tradition. This wonderful book will thrill readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Garden Design in Italy Gardens can hardly be judged by pictures and photographs alone, and it is essential that these should be supplemented by a survey drawn to scale; it is hardly possible to form a correct judgment unless the two are consulted together, and without the information which a plan gives it is difficult to grasp the conditions under which the designer worked. With this end in view, I have, therefore, engaged in the production of the present work, hoping that it may add materially to the study of garden design, and, perhaps, give others something of the pleasure it has afforded me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gardens of Italy: With Historical and Descriptive Notes Hen I set out before the Great War to prepare a new edition of the gardens OF italy it was with no calculated intention of doing more than a little revision and expansion. The interest of the subject has proved so great, however, that the present volume is, for all practical purposes, a new book. The magnificent series of photographs taken by the late Charles Latham has been retained, save for the elimination of a few subjects of minor interest, and about a hundred and fifty new photographs have been added to make the series of villas and gardens more comprehensive. Miss Evelyn March Phillipps' original text, with its valuable historical notes and the delightfully told stories of the people who lived in these old palaces and gardens, has been retained as far as possible. My work has been to add architectural notes throughout, to enlarge considerably the sections relating to the Roman and Florentine examples, to write entirely new chapters on the villas and gardens of Venetia, the lake district, and Genoa, to contribute a general introduction, and, not least important, to gather together a valuable series of plans. For these I have drawn freely on various sources, including Gauthier and Reinhardt for Genoa, and Percier et Fontaine for Rome. Although the garden plans by the latter, now reproduced, were made as long ago as 1809, they are in general so clear and correct that I thought it better to give them in their original state. Those which I checked on the spot did not show differences of such importance as to make it necessary to alter the originals. They contain in some instances restorations which Percier et Fontaine. Thought were justified to complete the original schemes. In some cases, e.g., the Palatine Hill, the drawings by these authors are all that now remain, and their labours in recording these old gardens deserve our warmest recognition. Returning to Italy for the purposes of this work, after nearly a quarter of a century, I was greatly impressed with the improved condition of the country. This is reflected in the better cared-for condition of many of these gardens and villas. Though some losses have occurred, it does not seem fair to bring the customary charges against the Italians of indifference to their own past. I take this opportunity of thanking the owners who in many cases have very cordially helped me: the views of the interiors at Dei Collazzi and the account of the Villa font'-all-'erta in particular are owing to such kindness. Two illustrations of the Villa Madama are reproduced from the Royal Institute of British Architects' Journal, by kind permission of Mr. Halsey Ricardo. A well-bound, portable work, it updates Georgina Masson's classic Italian Gardens (1961). Chatfield traces the evolution of Italian gardens from antiquity through the 19th century, then provides maps, a glossary, and detailed information on gardens designed between the 16th and 18th centuriesmany currently open to the public. The text includes notes on plantings, fountains, and sculpture as well as intriguing facts about the gardens' aristocratic owners; accounts of contemporary travelers enliven the whole. This gorgeous book will circulate briskly among those who love gardening, travel, and the history of landscape architecture. L.N. Reno, formerly with Kent State Univ., Ohio. Library Journal.
