Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drawings of the Royal Gallery of the Uffizi in Florence So many notable publications having been devoted to the drawings of foreign collections, it was only right and fitting that in Italy also we should think of estimating, in a special edition, the value of the magnificent collection of the Royal Gallery of the Uffizi, with a critical and descriptive text, interspersed with clear reproductions. In 1912, a committee of art connoisseurs, composed of P. N. Ferri, Carlo Gamba, Carlo Loeser and Giovanni Poggi had this idea, which could only be realized by the keen interest of a cultured editor and one full of initiative, such as Comm. Leo S. Olschki who understood at once the world-wide importance of the publication. The reproduction of the coloured phototypes, by the process of negatives selected for the various colours, was entrusted to Dr. Luigi Pampaloni. The committee began the work with enthusiasm and alacrity, overcoming not a few difficulties, because it was a question of selecting the most representative from the great sea of about 45,000 figure, landscape and ornamental drawings from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century. Book excerpt: Perhaps more than any other collector of his generation in the United States, Robert Lehman was interested in acquiring early drawings. He made a great effort to add drawings to the collection of paintings, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and other objects that his father, Philip Lehman, had begun assembling. The 116 Italian drawings analyzed and discussed in this volume are among the more than 2,000 works of art from the collection now housed in the Robert Lehman Wing of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Robert Lehman's collection demonstrates the variety of drawings produced in Italy from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, a period when the purposes and techniques of drawings, as well as the aims and abilities of the artist who made them, became increasingly sophisticated. The volume includes an elaborate design for an equestrian monument by Antonio Pollaiuolo, a magnificent study of a bear by Leonardo da Vinci, a cartoon by Luca Signorelli, a study for a vault fresco by Taddeo Zuccaro, and many other drawings that are among the best Italian examples to have survived from that era. Most types of drawings, in a wide variety of techniques, are represented—figure studies, grand compositions, landscapes, cartoons, modelli, and even sculptors' studies. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
Book Synopsis Fra Angelico to Leonardo by : Hugo Chapman
Download or read book Fra Angelico to Leonardo written by Hugo Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sumptuously illustrated catalogue charts the history of drawing in Italy from 1400, just prior to the emergence in Florence of the classically inspired naturalism of the Renaissance style, to around 1510 when Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian were on the verge of taking the innovations of earlier masters, such as Leonardo and Pollaiuolo, in a new direction. The book highlights the key role played by drawing in artistic teaching and in how artists studied the human body and the natural world. Aspects of regional difference, the development of new drawing techniques and classes of graphic work, such as finished presentation pieces to impress patrons, are also explored. An extended introduction focusing on how and why artists made drawings, with a special emphasis on the pivotal role of Leonardo, is richly illustrated with examples from the two collections that elucidate the technique and function of the works. This is followed by catalogue entries for just over 100 drawings where discussion of their function and significance is supported by comparative illustrations of related works, such as paintings.

Book excerpt: Why You Will Like This Guidebook: ** It's selective rather than inclusive. It highlights three dozen paintings out of the hundreds. It offers a "guided tour" instead of a card catalogue approach.** It takes advantage of the Uffizi's layout, which displays the paintings chronologically, to give you a sense of the profound shifts in religious worldview from the 14th to the 16th centuries. ** It invites you to look thoughtfully at certain paintings, to notice where your attention goes, and to explore your own responses as a vehicle for understanding and deepening your engagement with the art. "The Uffizi Gallery" will serve as a ready companion for your armchair travels as well as a hands-on guidebook for your on-site visits when you're in Tuscany. Based on my years of guiding travelers through the Uffizi, I've developed a keen sense of what engages people, and what bores them to death. I've chosen paintings that first caught my interest more than twenty years ago-and never lost it. Read this guide before your visit, take it with you when you go, and read it again whenever you want to relive your Renaissance art adventures.
