Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989, this ground-breaking ethnographic exploration of tattooing—and the art world surrounding it—covers the history, anthropology and sociology of body modification practices; the occupational experience of the tattooist; the process and social consequences of becoming a tattooed person; and the prospects of "serious" tattooing becoming an accepted art form. Curiously, despite the greater prevalence of tattoos and body modification in today’s society, there is still a stigma of deviance associated with people who get or ink tattoos. Retaining the core of the original book, this revised and expanded edition offers a new preface by the author and a new chapter focusing on the changes that have occurred in the tattoo world. A section on the new scholarly literature that has emerged, as well as the new modes of body modification that have come into vogue are included along with a new gallery of photographs that shows some splendid examples of contemporary tattoo art. A directory of artists' websites invites readers to discover the range of work being done around the world—from “suits” (full body tattoos) to skulls.

Book excerpt: He was only fifteen years old and a recent graduate of grade nine when his parents began to request, if not demand that he start earning his own money, a replacement for the allowance he had been receiving from since he was in the fifth grade. From his first employment posting as a golf caddy for $1.50 a round to a series of clerical positions in the Canadian Government, the biography of Mike Butler’s pursuit of mundane jobs is an occasionally aimless search for career, that he finally attains when he passes his thirtieth year. Expecting a future of invaluable employment opportunities, including good paying summer jobs, Mike Butler found himself wondering how he ended up taking jobs that he thought were just as low paying and miserable as the previous generation must have endured. Mike Butler’s labour history includes a tour of working on a golf course, in a grocery store, in a department store selling clothing, in a duty free shop in an airport, a brief stint in a restaurant, in factories making plastic bottle caps and chain saws, in a chemical laboratory, and in a variety of temporary clerical positions in several government departments.

Book excerpt: Sure Beats Working follows the story of Freddy Botica, and the series of unexpected twists and turns that ended up being a long and successful career in broadcast radio.Freddy was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1947 - the youngest child of Croatian parents who fled the conflict of World War II to give their children a new life full of opportunities. In 1969, while working as a signwriter for Coca Cola, Freddy was invited to spend a week aboard the Tiri 2 - the infamous ship that brought pirate radio station Radio Hauraki to the masses in New Zealand. He was on board the ship to repaint a faded sign, but when a severe storm hit Auckland a few days later, Freddy was asked to fill in on air for the rest of the week. His immediate success and appeal on air led to Freddy being offered a full time role with Radio Hauraki - the beginning of what would become a broadcasting career that spanned 5 decades, and broke Australian records.Freddy's time in radio gave him a chance to not only meet, but spend meaningful moments with many of rock music's greats - from spending a weekend with Alice Cooper in Sydney, to hosting Sting and the Police at a barbecue on the beachfront lawn of his home. Many broadcasters have interviewed the stars. Very few of them have spent extended periods of time with the stars and their families. A chance meeting with Neil Young's boat 'Ragland' in the Bay of Islands, led to a whole week spent with Neil soon after - windsurfing, and discussing life, family and music.Freddy was then part of the team that took Radio Hauraki to the top of the radio ratings in New Zealand. A radio station that originally didn't even have a legal license to broadcast was beating all their competition consistently through the late 1970s and early 80s. From there, Freddy was poached by the competition, and was a key member of New Zealand's first (and also legal) FM radio station, 89fm Stereo. In 1986, an offer to work in Perth offered Freddy the chance to work in a bigger country, and a bigger market. His golden voice and passion for music meant new Perth FM radio station 96fm was an almost overnight success, peaking with 35% of all Perth listening to 96fm - numbers that are unheard of in radio today. During his time at 96fm Freddy convinced Bob Geldof to fly to Perth and spend a whole week on air, creating one of the most memorable radio moments in Perth's history, and in Freddy's lifetime.A move to Perth rival station mix94.5 in 1992 precipitated a record-setting run for Freddy and his broadcast team - more than 13 years at number one - a record still unbeaten to this day.It might seem like luck, but Freddy Botica's passion for music and the people who perform it has guided much of his life, and led him to spend some very interesting moments with some of the people who have shaped popular music.Sure Beats Working is the story of all Freddy's moments in front of the microphone, and behind it. An honest and sometimes controversial account of an unexpectedly interesting life, influenced by some of rock music's biggest names.

The party is a little much for Ratrigues, and soon, he ends up drunk and passed out. When he awakens, the ship is no longer in Amsterdam. In fact, it's halfway around the bulge of Africa, set for Cape Town! Once in Cape Town, Ratrigues—thirsty for a quick hangover fix—discovers a local bar, the Rat & Roach. Here, he meets a sociable clan of rats and roaches who tell him about the unfortunate events in South Africa's District Six. District Six is set for redevelopment; many rodents and roaches will lose their homes, and there isn't much time before they will be forced to leave. This unlikely band of brothers heads out into the South African wilderness in search of a new area to reestablish their tightly knit community. The laws of the food chain are thrown out the window as rat, mouse, and roach band together to create new homes and new friendships in tumultuous 1960s Africa.

The action ranges from Vancouver Island to Central Florida and spans some thirty years of the protagonist’s life. It is a human tragedy written with humor and compassion. It is strictly for a mature and serious readership of all ages.

Book excerpt: Life has been a great adventure for Rick Elkins. A former US Navy fighter pilot during World War II, an airline pilot, and a consummate biker, he has never been afraid of taking risks. But though his mind is still sharp, his eighty-three-year-old body is not. Unless he proceeds with a risky surgery, heart failure awaits him. Rick decides against the surgery, wanting his remaining time on Earth free of doctors and hospitals. But nearing the end triggers a time of sober reflection, and in his mind he travels back to the end of World War II, when he started his career as a pilot. It was then that he developed a love for motorcycles and for Angie Mertz, a beautiful stewardess who later becomes his wife. Tragedy struck after only a year of marriage, however, when an auto accident claimed Angie's life. Rick, distraught, took an extended leave from his job and took his Harley-Davison motorcycle on a long road trip to California, where he met Annette, a fellow biker. Their on-and-off affair and the events that followed would alter Rick's world in a way he never expected. Now that Rick is old, alone, and unable to do the things he loves, he's ready to bow out gracefully. But then someone comes into his life that just might change his way of thinking about the way out.
