Book excerpt: Autonomous systems are those that evolve over time, and through learning, can make intelligent decisions when faced with unidentified and unknown situations. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) has been applied to an increasing number of real-world problems with considerable complexity. Due to their learning abilities, ANN-based systems have been increasingly attracting attention in applications where autonomy is critical and where identification of possible fault scenarios is not exhaustive before hand. We have proposed a methodology in which the learning rules that a trained network has adapted can be extracted and refined using rule extraction and rule refinement techniques, respectively, and then these refined rules are subsequently formally specified and verified against requirements specification using formal methods. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been demonstrated using a case study of an attitude control subsystem of a satellite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers two popular topics: fault detection and isolation (FDI) and flight data estimation using flush air data sensing (FADS) systems. Literature surveys, comparison tests, simulations and wind tunnel tests are performed. In both cases, a UAV platform is considered for demonstration purposes. In the first part of the book, FDI is considered for sensor faults where a neural network approach is implemented. FDI is applied both in academia and industry resulting in many publications over the past 50 years or so. However few publications consider neural networks in comparison to traditional techniques such as observer based, parameter estimations and parity space approaches. The second part of this book focuses on how to estimate flight data (angle of attack, airspeed) using a matrix of pressure sensors and a neural network model. In conclusion this book can serve as an introduction to FDI and FADS systems, a literature survey, and a case study for UAV applications.

This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fault detection and isolation is an important topic for researchers in the area of robotics and for industrial systems engineers. The need for a systematic method that will permit preventive maintenance through the diagnosis of incipient faults is obvious. At the same time it is desirable to reduce the false alarms rate so as to avoid unnecessary and costly interruptions of industrial processes and robotic tasks. The proposed book aims at analyzing recent advances in the area of fault diagnosis for robotic and industrial systems. There are totally 9 chapters in this book. Chapter 1 deals with supervision for the safe navigation of autonomous robots in a natural environment. Fault diagnosis and natural environment perception are used at different levels within a supervisor architecture and real operation is demonstrated on an autonomous tractor driving in an orchard. Chapter 2 gives an introduction to fault tolerant sensor systems which is based on the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method. Chapter 3 aims at analyzing and implementing new solutions for the problem of distributed estimation for condition monitoring of nonlinear dynamical systems (e.g. automatic ground vehicles, unmanned surface or underwater vessels and unmanned aerial vehicles), so as to enable early detection of faults and the take up of efficient restoration measures. To this end, the development of distributed nonlinear state estimation and distributed fault detection and isolation (FDI) tools is proposed. Chapter 4 proposes so-called logic-dynamic approach for fault diagnosis in industrial systems described by nonlinear dynamic models with non-differentiable nonlinearities. The approach allows solving the problem of fault diagnosis is nonlinear systems using well-known linear methods. In Chapter 5, observer design for nonlinear systems described by a Takagi-Sugeno model with unmeasurable premise variables is proposed. Furthermore, a fault tolerant controller is proposed for such a system in order to preserve some performances of the system by trajectory tracking in faulty situations. Chapter 6 explains and demonstrates the utilization of different nonlinear-dynamics-based procedures for the purposes of structural health monitoring as well as for monitoring of robot joints based on Vibration-based Health Monitoring (VHM) methods In Chapter 7, vibrations picked from spalled defective rolling element bearings is presented. It uses a four stage processing algorithm to detect and diagnose the defective component in rolling element. In Chapter 8, the problem of fault diagnosis with parity equations is considered for nonlinear dynamic systems whose models are taken in the form of ordinary differential equations. The active and passive approaches are involved to achieve the robustness of the diagnostic procedure Finally, Chapter 9 proposes a graphical method for diagnosis of nonlinear systems. The proposed method is based on a 2D signature obtained by measurements projection over some moving time-window. This projection highlights what happens inside the system and enables the diagnosis of abnormal behaviors. This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate students and postgraduate students. It takes a practical approach rather than a conceptual approach. It offers a truly reader-friendly way to get to the subject related to the semantic web, making it the ideal resources for any student who is new to this subject and providing a definitive guide to anyone in this vibrant and evolving discipline. This book is an invaluable companion for students from their first encounter with the subject to more advanced studies, while the high quality artworks are designed to present the key concepts with simplicity, clarity and consistency.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, model based fault detection, isolation, and estimation problem in several classes of nonlinear systems is studied using sliding mode and learning approaches. First, a fault diagnosis scheme using a bank of repetitive learning observers is presented. The diagnostic observers are established in a generalized observer scheme, and the observer inputs are repetitively updated using the output estimation error in a proportional-integral structure. Next, a framework for robust fault diagnosis using sliding mode and learning approaches is proposed to deal with various types of faults in a class of nonlinear systems with triangular input form. In the designed diagnostic observers, first order and second order sliding modes are used respectively, to achieve robust state estimation in the presence of uncertainties, and additional online estimators are established to characterize the faults. In order to guarantee that the sliding mode is able to distinguish the system uncertainties from the faults, two iterative adaptive laws are used to update the sliding mode switching gains. Moreover, different online fault estimators are developed using neural state space models, iterative learning algorithms, and wavelet networks. Another class of nonlinear systems where an unmeasurable part of state can be described as a nonlinear function of the output and its derivatives is considered next. Accordingly, a class of fault diagnosis schemes using high order sliding mode differentiators (HOSMDs) and online estimators are proposed, where neural adaptive estimators and iterative neuron PID estimators are designed. Additionally, a fault diagnosis scheme using HOSMDs and neural networks based uncertainty observers is designed in order to achieve a better performance in robust fault detection. If the uncertainties can be accurately estimated, the generated diagnostic residual is more sensitive to the onset of faults. Finally, a fault diagnosis scheme using Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy models, neural networks, and sliding mode is developed. The availability of TS fuzzy models makes this fault diagnosis scheme applicable to a wider class of nonlinear systems. The proposed fault diagnosis schemes are applied to several types of satellite control systems, and the simulation results demonstrate their performance.
