Book excerpt: As new information is introduced and environmental changes occur, Plant Biology continues to develop and evolve as a science. Updated and revised to keep pace with these developments, the Fifth Edition of Botany: An Introduction to Plant Biology provides a modern and comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of botany while retaining the important focus of natural selection, analysis of botanical phenomena, and diversity. Students are first introduced to topics that should be most familiar (plant structure), proceed to those less familiar (plant physiology and development), and conclude with topics that are likely least familiar to the introductory student (genetics, evolution, and ecology). Mauseth is sure to provide the latest material on molecular biology and plant biotechnology in an effort to keep pace with these advancing areas of study. All sections are written to be self-contained allowing for a flexible presentation of course material.Key Features:- Includes new content on molecular biology, plant biotechnology, and the most recent coverage of taxonomy and phylogeny of plants.- Now available with a new electronic laboratory manual.- Plants Do Things Differently boxes help students understand and compare plant biology with human biology.- End-of-chapter study guide includes nearly 50 or more questions in each chapter, urging students to test themselves on the most important points in the chapter.- Alternatives boxes encourage students to think expansively about alternative aspects of plant biology that are more advantageous in certain conditions.

Book excerpt: Plants are integral to human wellbeing, and many species have been domesticated for over ten thousand years. Evidence of plant scientific investigation and classification can be found in ancient texts from cultures around the world (Chinese, Indian, Greco-Roman, Muslim etc.), while early modern botany can be traced to the late 15th and early 16th centuries in Europe. During the past several decades plant biology has been revolutionized first by molecular biology and then by the genomic era. The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana has proved an invaluable tool for investigation into fundamental processes in plant biology, many of which share commonalities with animal biology. Plant-specific processes from reproduction to immunity and second messengers have also yielded to extensive investigation. With the genomes of more than thirty plant species now available and many more planned in the near future, the impact on our understanding of plant evolution and biology continues to grow. Our increased ability to engineer plant species to a variety of ends may provide novel solutions to ensure adequate and reliable food production and renewable energy even as climate change impacts our environment. The decision to focus the 2012 Symposium on plant science reflects the enormous research progress achieved in recent years, and is intended to provide a broad synthesis of the current state of the field, setting the stage for future discoveries and application. This is the first Symposium in this historic series focused exclusively on the botanical sciences. Book excerpt: The aim of this project is to produce a the world’s most comprehensive reference in plant sciences. The Plant Sciences will be published both in print and online; the online text will be regularly updated to enable the reference to remain a useful authoritative resource for decades to come. The aim is to provide a sustainable superstructure on which can be built further volumes as plant science evolves. The first edition will contain ten volumes, with approximately 20-30 chapters per volume. The target audience for the initial ten volumes will be upper-division undergraduates, as well as graduate students and practitioners looking for an entry into a particular topic. The Encyclopedia will provide both background and essential information in plant biology. Topics will include plant genetics, genomics, biochemistry, natural products, proteins, cell biology, development, reproduction, physiology, ecology, evolution, systematics, biodiversity, and applications, including crop improvement and non-food applications.
