Book Synopsis Advances in Nuclear Physics by : Michel Baranger
Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Physics written by Michel Baranger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In both the present volume of Advances in Nuclear Physics and in the next volume, which will follow in a few months' time, we have stretched our normal pattern of reviews by including articles of more major proportions than any we have published before. As a result we have only three review articles in Volume 5. From the beginning of this series it has been our aim, as editors, to achieve variation in the scope, style, and length of individual articles sufficient to match the needs of the individual topic, rather than to restrain authors within rigid limits. It has not been our experience that this flexibility has led to unnecessary exuberance on the part of the authors. We feel that the major articles now entering the series are entirely justified. The article by Professor Delves on "Variational Techniques in the Nuclear Three-Body Problem" is an authoritative, definitive article on a subject which forms a cornerstone of nuclear physics. If we start with two body interactions, then the three-nucleon system is, perhaps, the only many nucleon system whose exact description may lie within the scope of human ingenuity. In recent years some new techniques of scattering theory, origi nating mostly in particle physics, have led to a great deal of new interest in the nuclear three-body problem. In this series we have had two articles (by Mitra and by Duck) on the new approaches.
Book Synopsis Theory and Applications of Moment Methods in Many-Fermion Systems by : B. J. Dalton
Download or read book Theory and Applications of Moment Methods in Many-Fermion Systems written by B. J. Dalton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first international conference on "Theory and Applications of Moment Methods in Many-Fermion Systems" was held September 10 - 13, 1979 at Iowa State University. Manuscripts of the invited talks presented at this conference are the contents of this volume. These manuscripts were prepared and delivered to the editors by the authors; the responsibility for any errors in scientific con tent is theirs. While we, the editors, have made every effort to keep this volume as free from typographical errors as possible, we accept responsibility for such errors as do occur, even those which may be mistaken for scientific error. All but one of the invited talks given at the conference are reported here; those authors apparently felt unable to provide the editors with manuscripts. The editors. who also served as the organizing committee, would like to express appreciation to the sponsors of this con ference: Physics Department, Ames Laboratory, Energy and Mineral Resources Research Institute, and the Graduate College, all of Iowa State University, the National Science Foundation, and the U. S. Department of Energy. Their generosity both in terms of funding and support made the conference possible. We should also like to express our gratitude to the Interna tional Advisory Committee whose prestige lent support to the con ference and whose advice in topic selection was invaluable. Those members were: Grenoble, France R. Arvieu C. Bender Lawrence Livermore Laboratory J. B. French University of Rochester Fowler California Institute of Technology W.
Book Synopsis Evolution of Particle Physics by : M Conversi
Download or read book Evolution of Particle Physics written by M Conversi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of Particle Physics is concerned with the birth of particle physics and its maturation as a scientific field, with emphasis on advances in both theory and experiment. Topics covered include weak interactions and the breaking of hadron symmetries; the role of complexity in nature; symmetry principles in physics; and isobaric analog resonances in phenomenological nuclear spectroscopy. Adiabatic transformations as well as range and straggling of muons are also discussed. This book is comprised of 24 chapters and begins with a review of some of the most important discoveries in particle physics, along with the tools and techniques that made it possible. The reader is then introduced to symmetry breaking, paying particular attention to hadron symmetries and their connection to weak interactions. The following chapters explore channeling of ultrarelativistic charged particles in crystals; coherent scattering of high-energy hadrons by light nuclei; elementary particle physics and high-energy physics; and the design and use of large electron synchrotrons. This monograph will be of interest to particle physicists.
Book Synopsis Spectral Distributions in Nuclei and Statistical Spectroscopy by : V. K. B. Kota
Download or read book Spectral Distributions in Nuclei and Statistical Spectroscopy written by V. K. B. Kota and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book a first comprehensive review on statistical spectroscopy deals with two related yet distinct topics a" averages and fluctuations. While fluctuations have been dealt with in considerable detail in Porter's book entitled Statistical Theories of Spectra: Fluctuations and subsequent reviews and books there does not exist at present a similar treatise on averages. This unique volume is designed to fill this significant gap.The book begins with an introductory review and overview of the subject of spectral distributions initiated by J Bruce French in the 60's followed by a collection of original papers which continue to give new insight on average properties of spectra. The purpose is to highlight the considerable advancements made in the application of statistical spectroscopy to nuclear structure and to encourage new directions in random matrix theory many-body chaos and statistical mechanics of finite quantum systems such as nuclei atoms molecules quantum dots etc.Along with Wong's book entitled Nuclear Statistical Spectroscopy this volume would be useful to a reader looking for a thorough introduction to the subject as well as to the specialist contemplating new applications. Finally with most of the material available in one place this book would be ideal in the design of graduate courses in statistical spectroscopy suited to specific needs.
