Book excerpt: African Islands provides the first geographically and chronologically comprehensive overview of the archaeology of African islands. This book draws archaeologically informed histories of African islands into a single synthesis, focused on multiple issues of common interest, among them human impacts on previously uninhabited ecologies, the role of islands in the growth of long-distance maritime trade networks, and the functioning of plantation economies based on the exploitation of unfree labour. Addressing and repairing the longstanding neglect of Africa in general studies of island colonization, settlement, and connectivity, it makes a distinctively African contribution to studies of island archaeology. The availability of this much-needed synthesis also opens up a better understanding of the significance of African islands in the continent's past as a whole. After contextualizing chapters on island archaeology as a field and an introduction to the variety of Africa’s islands and the archaeological research undertaken on them, the book focuses on four themes: arriving, altering, being, and colonizing and resisting. An interdisciplinary approach is taken to these themes, drawing on a broad range of evidence that goes beyond material remains to include genetics, comparative studies of the languages, textual evidence and oral histories, island ecologies, and more. African Islands provides an up-to-date synthesis and account of all aspects of archaeological research on Africa’s islands for students and academics alike.

Book excerpt: Adventurer, traveller, tourguide and lodge builder, Salomé Visser tells the very personal story of how, as a tour guide, she found this spot on the banks of the Kwando River in the Caprivi, where she dreamed of building a lodge. The book takes the reader on an intimate journey showing Salomé's love of the land and the people. She relates the arduous process of obtaining permission to occupy the small Mazambala Island and to build her dream lodge there. "Somewhere in the Caprivi-Strip, about a hundred kilometers from Katima Mulilo on the road to the Zambian border, there is a beautiful lodge named Mazambala Island Lodge. This specific corner of the world had stolen my heart in 1995 when I worked as a tour guide in Namibia. I don't think anyone could have travelled in the then unspoilt Golden Triangle up to Horseshoe, amongst herd after herd of elephant, buffalo, lechwe and hippo and remain untouched. That is what happened to me, to such an extent that after a year, I knew that that was where I had to be. Not as a holidaymaker, but to live in the untamed bush - and to build a lodge. Many years later, the difficult times and miseries long forgotten, almost every visitor to the lodge would sooner or later ask the inevitable question - usually when we had been relaxing around a late-night campfire: Where is your husband? - I don't have one. - Who built the lodge? - I did, using only a handful of locals! - Unbelievable! Tell us! This was almost always the amazed reaction. It is the insistence of people such as these that has persuaded me to tell this story ten years after building the lodge and a few years after giving up my ownership of Mazambabla Island Lodge. At the same time I have a message to bring: that any person, male or female, despite their appearance, abilities and many other aspects, can can successfully accomplish whatever they wish." - Salomé Visser

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a global effort to identify those areas where conservation measures are needed most urgently, World Wildlife Fund has assembled teams of scientists to conduct ecological assessments of all seven continents. Freshwater Ecoregions of Africa and Madagascar is the latest contribution, presenting in a single volume the first in-depth analysis of the state of freshwater biodiversity across Africa, Madagascar, and the islands of the region. Looking at biodiversity and threats in terms of biological units rather than political units, the book offers a comprehensive examination of the entire range of aquatic systems. In addition to its six main chapters, the book includes nineteen essays by regional experts that provide more depth on key issues, as well as six detailed appendixes that present summary data used in the analyses, specific analytical methodologies, and a thorough text description for each of Africa's ninety-three freshwater ecoregions. Freshwater Ecoregions of Africa and Madagascar provides a blueprint for conservation action and represents an unparalleled guide for investments and activities of conservation agencies and donor organizations.

This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are 52 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the world. These boast of rich biodiversity landscapes, including a large variety of endemic species and indigenous knowledge that can make them the repository of our planetary ecosystem (UNEP, 2014). Nevertheless, the SIDS are identified as being one of the negatively impacted areas of climate change in the world, with huge implications for biodiversity loss and survival. There is a general consensus that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from small islands are negligible in comparison to global emissions, but the effects of climate change are devastating as a consequence of the sea level rise associated with global warming (Nurse et al., 2014). Long-term risks projected for small islands include increase in coastal flooding, freshwater stress and risks across marine ecosystems. Other threats to the SIDS include more frequent strong winds and cyclones, sea water intrusion into aquifers, and freshwater scarcity (Kelman and West, 2009). The apparent inability of these countries to adequately and effectively adapt to these impacts is the result of a combination of factors, including their exposure, sensitivity and vulnerability to shocks, and the costly nature of adaptation measures (Robinson, 2019). The report includes an introductory chapter, and climate change and the importance of the AFOLU sectors in the second and third chapters, respectively. The fourth and fifth chapters discuss the challenges in agriculture and the needs and priorities for climate change adaptation and mitigation. The adoption of CSA for integrated climate action as well as barriers to adopting promising CSA technologies/practices are discussed in Chapter 6. Furthermore, the capacity development needs required to address barriers to adoption of CSA opportunities and drive sustainable and tranformational results at scale are discussed. Lastly, the forward-looking chapter discusses knowledge gaps, such as the insufficient capture of the fishery subsector in the country CSA profiles, given its contribution to food security and the countries’ economy, and recommends priority areas to serve as entry points for CSA investments.
