Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Suspended Lives vividly explores the everyday experiences of asylum seekers in the United States. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork among a diverse group of asylum seekers, Bridget M. Haas traces the emotional, psychological, and social effects of being embedded in the US asylum regime. Appealing to the United States for protection, asylum seekers are cast into a complex and protracted bureaucratic system that increasingly sees them as threatening or suspicious. Haas takes readers into the intimate spaces of asylum seekers' homes and communities, as well as into legal and bureaucratic settings that are often inaccessible to the public. Poignantly foregrounding the lived experiences and voices of asylum seekers, Suspended Lives exposes the asylum system as a site of multiple, yet often hidden and normalized, forms of violence. In doing so, Haas also illuminates how asylum seekers respond to these harms to actively endure the asylum process"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes that Central European cities have undergone since 1989 deserve a complex, interdisciplinary analysis that offers deep insight into the specific nature of the transformation taking place in the region. This book presents a multidimensional and cross-disciplinary case study of Kraków, focusing on the changes taking place in Central Europe over the last three decades. This book answers the question of how the once neglected city of Kraków has transformed into a thriving global tourist destination, an attractive investment market, and a European leader of shared services. It examines political, socio-economic, cultural, and architectural development of the city against the ongoing processes of post-1989 political and economic transition, European integration, and globalisation. The authors offer a portrait of the evolution in thinking about the developmental resources of the city, accounting for what is broadly construed as culture and heritage. Whereas previous studies have offered only one-dimensional insights into these phenomena, this book highlights the specific characteristics of the transition and identifies the challenges typical of many cities in Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary, after the fall of communism. This book will be valuable reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate and PhD students of economic geography, urban studies, public management, political studies, sociology, culture and heritage management, and modern history, as well as those with an interest in Central European and transformation issues.

This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Second World War the Bodleian Library in Oxford acquired a set of Aramaic letters, eight sealings, and the two leather bags in which the sealed letters were once stored. The letters concern the affairs of Arsāma, satrap of Egypt in the later fifth century. Taken with other material associated with him (mostly in Aramaic, Demotic Egyptian, and Akkadian), they illuminate the Achaemenid world of which Arsāama was a privileged member and evoke a wide range of social, economic, cultural, organizational, and political perspectives, from multi-lingual communication, storage and disbursement of resources, and satrapal remuneration, to cross-regional ethnic movement, long-distance travel, religious practice, and iconographic projection of ideological messages. Particular highlights include a travel authorization (the only example of something implicit in numerous Persepolis documents), texts about the religious life of the Judaean garrison at Elephantine, Arsāma's magnificent seal (a masterpiece of Achaemenid glyptic, inherited from a son of Darius I), and echoes of temporary disturbances to Persian management of Egypt. But what is also impressive is the underlying sense of systematic coherence founded on and expressed in the use of formal, even formalized, written communication as a means of control. The Arsāma dossier is not alone in evoking that sense, but its size, variety, and focus upon a single individual give it a unique quality. Though this material has not been hidden from view, it has been insufficiently explored: it is the purpose of the three volumes of Arsāma and his World: The Bodleian Letters in Context to provide the fullest presentation and historical contextualization of this extraordinary cache yet attempted. Volume I presents and translates the letters alongside a detailed line-by-line commentary, while Volume II reconstructs the two seals that made the clay bullae that sealed the letters, with special attention to Arsāma's magnificent heirloom seal. Volume III comprises a series of thematic essays which further explore the administrative, economic, military, ideological, religious, and artistic environment to which Arsāma and the letters belonged.

First, she addresses selected theoretical issues related to interpreting and discusses the specifics of the most common types of interpreting. This is followed by an overview of an interpreter's competencies and skills and a chapter on note-taking as an aid to consecutive interpreting. The process of interpreting is presented in detail, the success or failure of which depends largely on the choice of techniques and strategies. This part also addresses the problem of errors in interpreting as well as nonverbal elements and interpreting assessment. Finally, before presenting a selection of practical exercises for interpreting courses, the role of creative thinking in the context of interpreting is discussed.

This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents many valuable tips for making decisions related to traffic flow in the transport networks. The knowledge base in practical examples, as well as the decision support systems described in this book, finds interest among people who face the daily challenge of searching for solutions to the problems of contemporary transport networks and systems. The publication is therefore addressed to local authorities related to the planning and development of development strategies for selected areas with regard to transport (both in the urban and regional dimension) and to representatives of business and industry, as people directly involved in the implementation of traffic engineering solutions. The tips contained in individual sections of the publication allow to look at a given problem in an advanced way and facilitate the selection of the appropriate strategy (among others, in relation to the evaluation of BEV and FCHEV electric vehicles in the creation of a sustainable transport systems, development of ecological public transport on the example of selected cities, impact of drivers' waiting time on the gap acceptance at median, uncontrolled T-intersections). In turn, due to a new approach to theoretical models (including, inter alia, the application of genetic algorithms for the planning of urban rail transportation system, comprehensive estimate of life cycle costs of new technical systems using reliability verification algorithm, application and comparison of machine learning algorithms in traffic signals prediction), the publication also interests scientists and researchers carrying out research in this area.

Book excerpt: In this volume, the authors discuss in detail LSP teaching in Poland and Slovenia. For this purpose, they deal with the basic areas of LSP teaching, starting with the definition of LSP, and then needs analysis, the development of syllabuses and curricula, the preparation of LSP teaching materials, the choice of appropriate teaching methodology and, last but not least, assessment. One chapter focuses on LSP teachers, discussing their roles and competences, pre-service and in-service education, professional development programmes, LSP teacher identity, and the professional challenges they need to negotiate in their teaching contexts and along their careers. EU projects to date in the field of LSP teacher education and professional development needs that address the growing and diverse needs of experienced and future LSP teachers are also presented (TRAILs, Catapult, and LSP-TEOC.Pro). Last, based on interviews with language teacher educators in Poland and Slovenia, the perspective is changed to describe the relevant elements of the pre-service education and in-service professional development as seen by this very important group of stakeholders.
