Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After surviving a shipwreck and finding her way to Golden Age Amsterdam, beautiful and clever but naive Isabela Caldern returns to her 17th-century Spanish village at age seventeen to fulfill the destiny her deceased father set in motion at her birth. When she finds her beloved childhood home altered and life with her husband unbearable, Isabela seeks solace from a healer cook, a mysterious, erudite tailor of unknown origin, and her husbands long-term mistress who hides a threatening secret. Isolated and distraught when illness and the Inquisition destroy these precious friendships, she again sets sail - this time with her two children - to the New World towns of San Agustn and New Amsterdam. While serving as a language interpreter in a dingy jail cell, she reconnects with the engaging and attentive Dutch artist, Pieter Hals, with whom she spent a memorable evening a decade earlier. At the time she was suddenly wrenched away from the Amsterdam orphans in her care, Pieter had begun painting her portrait. Now when the possibility of a renewed and joyful relationship looms, while the unfinished youthful portrait beckons from its attic perch across the sea in Amsterdam, obstacles and self-doubt continue to block Isabelas path to self-fulfillment and happiness.
Book Synopsis Archaeology at La Isabela by : Kathleen A. Deagan
Download or read book Archaeology at La Isabela written by Kathleen A. Deagan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Kathleen Deagan and Jose Maria Cruxent present detailed technical documentation of their ten-year archaeological excavation of La Isabela, America's first colony. The artefacts and material remains of the town offer rich material for comparative research into Euro-American cultural and material development during the crucial transition from the medieval era to the Renaissance. The period when La Isabela was in existence witnessed great innovation and change in many areas of technology. The archaeological evidence of La Isabela's architecture, weaponry, numismatics, pottery and metallurgy can be precisely dated, helping to chart the sequence of this change and revealing much that is new about late medieval technology. The authors' archaeological research also provides a foundation for their insights into the reasons for the demise of La Isabela.

Book Synopsis Happy Dreams of Liberty by : R. Isabela Morales
Download or read book Happy Dreams of Liberty written by R. Isabela Morales and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A poignant, multi-generational saga of a mixed-race family in the US West and South from the antebellum period through the rise of Jim Crow. When Samuel Townsend died at his home in Madison County, Alabama, in November 1856, the fifty-two-year-old white planter left behind hundreds of slaves, thousands of acres of rich cotton land, and a net worth of approximately $200,000. In life, Samuel had done little to distinguish himself from other members of the South's elite slaveholding class. But he made a name for himself in death by leaving almost the entirety of his fortune to his five sons, four daughters, and two nieces: all of them his slaves. In this deeply researched, movingly narrated portrait of the extended Townsend family, R. Isabela Morales reconstructs the migration of this mixed-race family across the American West and South over the second half of the nineteenth century. Searching for communities where they could exercise their newfound freedom and wealth to the fullest, members of the family homesteaded and attended college in Ohio and Kansas; fought for the Union Army in Mississippi; mined for silver in the Colorado Rockies; and, in the case of one son, returned to Alabama to purchase part of the old plantation where he had once been held as a slave. In Morales's telling, the Townsends' story maps a new landscape of opportunity and oppression, where the meanings of race and freedom--as well as opportunities for social and economic mobility--were dictated by highly local circumstances. During the turbulent period between the Civil War and the rise of Jim Crow at the turn of the twentieth century, the Townsends carved out spaces where they were able to benefit from their money and mixed-race ancestry, pass down generational wealth, and realize some of their happy dreams of liberty.

Book excerpt: Isabela's Island is a story of friendship, love, mystery, adventure, and humor. Five quirky women married with children first meet in the Houston suburbs and become fast friends after sharing in common such things as loneliness and their love of tennis. Off on their eagerly-anticipated, yearly girls' trip-this time to the Grand Caymans-they are temporarily free from husbands, kids, and PTA meetings. The sun, the sand, and ultimately, Enrique "Ricky" De La Joya, a beautiful green-eyed Cuban tennis player who defected from Cuba by walking away from a Davis Cup match in Mexico, serve to make this romantic weekend one that will change their lives forever. Now connected to a murder, the camaraderie that was formed out of loneliness, needless to say, the women's circle of friendship changes dramatically. "This ain't no YaYa Sisterhood," Isabela surmises. With the help of the De La Joya family and their connections in Las Vegas, Declan O'Connor and Isabela Mason set out to tidy up the mess, but can their lives ever be neat again?
