Emphasizing issues relating to family, much of my work centers on my experiences and interactions in the household of my aunt and uncle after the deaths of my parents, six month apart. While I had a connection with my aunt, my relationship with my uncle posed numerous challenges as a result of his pattern of sexual abuse, beginning when I was a young child and lasting through my teen years. As I moved into my twenties, I began to find some measure of independence through my career path, but events took a downward turn when my uncle decided that I should move out of the home in which I was raised. Later, I describe starting a new life with my husband, Jay, but this association failed to provide the happiness that I desired. In concluding sections of "I Know a Way Out", I portray the events of my present, depicting a new life with my "stranger" as well as the spiritual re-awakening that I experienced at the age of thirty-one. Although grounded on a level of despair and uncertainty, this narrative frequently injects a spirit of hope based on my personal faith. As a whole, I wish to inspire the reader by rendering the notion that spirituality will furnish the power to transcend the relative limitations that life may present.

This migration of approximately five million people helped improve the financial prospects of black Americans, who, in the next generation, moved increasingly into the middle class. Over seven years, Lisa Krissoff Boehm gathered oral histories with women migrants and their children, two groups largely overlooked in the story of this event. She also utilized existing oral histories with migrants and southerners in leading archives. In extended excerpts from the oral histories, and in thoughtful scholarly analysis of the voices, this book offers a unique window into African American women's history. These rich oral histories reveal much that is surprising. Although the Jim Crow South presented persistent dangers, the women retained warm memories of southern childhoods. Notwithstanding the burgeoning war industry, most women found themselves left out of industrial work. The North offered its own institutionalized racism; the region was not the promised land. Additionally, these African American women juggled work and family long before such battles became a staple of mainstream discussion. Stepping around fruitless arguments over whether or not ghettos are dysfunctional communities that exacerbate poverty, and beyond modest proposals to ameliorate their problems, one of America's leading experts on civil rights gives us a stunning but commonsensical solution: give residents the means to leave. Inner cities, writes Owen Fiss, are structures of subordination. The only way to end the poverty they transmit across generations is to help people move out of them--and into neighborhoods with higher employment rates and decent schools. Based on programs tried successfully in Chicago and elsewhere, Fiss's proposal is for a provocative national policy initiative that would give inner-city residents rent vouchers so they can move to better neighborhoods. This would end at last the informal segregation, by race and income, of our metropolitan regions. Given the government's role in creating and maintaining segregation, Fiss argues, justice demands no less than such sweeping federal action. To sample the heated controversy that Fiss's ideas will ignite, the book includes ten responses from scholars, journalists, and practicing lawyers. Some endorse Fiss's proposal in general terms but take issue with particulars. Others concur with his diagnosis of the problem but argue that his policy response is wrongheaded. Still others accuse Fiss of underestimating the internal strength of inner-city communities as well as the hostility of white suburbs. Fiss's bold views should set off a debate that will help shape urban social policy into the foreseeable future. It is indispensable reading for anyone interested in social justice, domestic policy, or the fate of our cities.
