Book Synopsis Is Paul also among the Prophets? by : Jeffrey W. Aernie
Download or read book Is Paul also among the Prophets? written by Jeffrey W. Aernie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aernie examines the prophetic material in the Old Testament and its relationship with the prophetic material in Second Temple Judaism, Hellenism, and the early Christian movement. The subsequent analysis of 1 Corinthians constitutes an investigation of the effect of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on Paul's self-presentation in 1 Cor 9.15-18 and rhetorical framework in 1 Cor 14.20-25 as a methodological foundation for the exegetical analysis of 2 Corinthians. Aernie explores the influence of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on Paul's apostolic self-presentation and rhetoric in 2 Corinthians. The analysis of Paul's self-presentation examines the apostle's relationship with Moses, the Isaianic servant, and Jeremiah in order to define Paul's position with regard to the preceding prophetic tradition. Aernie analyses Paul's argument in 2 Cor 2.14-16; 4.1-6; 6.14-7.1; 12.1-10 then seeks to examine the influence of the Old Testament prophetic tradition on the formation of Paul's rhetorical framework. Aernie's intention is to provide support for the notion that the particularly prophetic nature of Paul's apostolic persona affects both his self-presentation and rhetorical agenda in 2 Corinthians.

Book Synopsis Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets by : Matthew Anslow
Download or read book Fulfilling the Law and the Prophets written by Matthew Anslow and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-18 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthew’s Gospel makes mention of prophets and prophecy more than any other canonical Gospel. Yet its perspective on prophecy has generally been neglected within biblical scholarship when, in fact, Jesus’ prophetic vocation is a central christological theme for Matthew. This new study by Matthew Anslow seeks to draw attention to this underdeveloped focus within Matthean studies. The central claim of the book is that in Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus’ prophetic vocation is presented as a multi-faceted phenomenon, drawing on several prophetic traditions. Like biblical and popular prophets before him, Jesus is depicted by Matthew as calling Israel back to covenantal faithfulness, thereby providing guidance for the identity, theology, and communal life of God’s people.

Book Synopsis Introduction to the Prophets by : Paul L. Redditt
Download or read book Introduction to the Prophets written by Paul L. Redditt and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing in a conversational rather than a scholarly tone, Paul Redditt assumes little or no prior knowledge of the Old Testament as he presents and introduces the Major and Minor Prophets in the canonical order of the English Bible. The chapters of Redditt's Introduction to the Prophets discuss the place of each book in the canon; the literary setting of each book; their structure, integrity, and authorship; the main genre(s) in each; special features of each book; basic emphases of each book; and problems -- theological, literary, or historical -- raised by a study of the book. Among other things, Redditt demonstrates that the prophets were both “foretellers” and “forthtellers,” and he argues that the Old Testament prophets developed the concept of monotheism. Each chapter ends with questions for further reflection. Concluding the volume are a helpful glossary and several indexes.

Download or read book Paul, One of the Prophets? written by Karl Olav Sandnes and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 1991 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It should be emphasized that Paul never calls himself a prophet, nor is he titualted so by Luke. This fact, though very important, does not do away with the quest for prophetic elements and features in Paul's ministry. It is in fact a commonplace in Pauline scholarship that Paul's apostolate was more or less marked by prophetic features. This agreement is based upon several, but also different kinds of observations" -- Introduction, p. 2.
