Book Synopsis Social Choice and Individual Values by : Kenneth Joseph Arrow
Download or read book Social Choice and Individual Values written by Kenneth Joseph Arrow and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1963-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature on the theory of social choice has grown considerably beyond the few items in existence at the time the first edition of this book appeared in 1951. Some of the new literature has dealt with the technical, mathematical aspects, more with the interpretive. My own thinking has also evolved somewhat, although I remain far from satisfied with present formulations. The exhaustion of the first edition provides a convenient time for a selective and personal stocktaking in the form of an appended commentary entitled, 'Notes on the Theory of Social Choice, 1963, ' containing reflections on the text and its omissions and on some of the more recent literature. This form has seemed more appropriate than a revision of the original text, which has to some extent acquired a life of its own.

Download or read book Ready or Not written by Stacie G. Goffin and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ready or Not made its mark in 2007 by boldly calling for a field-wide response to the question: “What defines and bounds early care and education as a field of practice?” A dozen years later, this question remains pivotal to the field’s understanding of its present and its aspirations for the future. In this updated and expanded edition, Goffin and Washington reunite to examine the major issues that must still be addressed if children are to be given more and better opportunities. This second edition will help everyone whose work impacts the ECE workforce, including those working directly with children, to deepen their commitment to adaptive and systems work and to develop the leadership capacity needed to become change agents. Ready or not, early childhood education needs to tackle its adaptive challenges. Nothing less will enable it to shift the field’s developmental trajectory, fulfill its potential, and satisfy its obligations to children, families, and society. “The second edition of Ready or Not is a reflective self-examination of the field of early care and education. It is a must-read book.” —Marquita Furness Davis, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation “Goffin and Washington boldly identify the barriers and opportunities we face.” —Anne Douglass, University of Massachusetts Boston “A must-read for those that are invested in early care and education.” —Tracy Ehlert, State Representative for Iowa House District 70, Cedar Rapids, IA “A must-read for everyone who is committed to the field’s success.” —Ariel Ford, Office of Early Learning, City of Chattanooga

Providing a framework for self-monitoring, simple tools for change, and four keys steps to guide change, Cuje's Choice-Cube Method equips readers finally to answer both questions.According to Cujé, normal feelings of defensiveness and self-protection can be dangerous when individuals become stuck in those postures. She points out that readers can use her method to check bodily stress, negative emotions, painful and distorted thoughts, and misdirected desires. Then once aware of those reactions, they can learn to take responsibility for them and use her Choice-Cube tools and four key steps to make necessary changes. Developed out of years of experience as a therapist, university adjunct faculty member, and workshop presenter, this down-to-earth application of current brain research, trauma research, and attachment theory can help readers consistently resolve problems in the present, rework past problems, and program their future. The author believes this method can benefit therapists as well as secular readers and believers. Book Synopsis Real Choices/new Voices by : Douglas J. Amy
Download or read book Real Choices/new Voices written by Douglas J. Amy and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing realization that many of the problems afflicting American elections can be traced to the electoral system itself, in particular to our winner-take-all approach to electing officials. Douglas Amy demonstrates that switching to proportional representation elections--the voting system used in most other Western democracies, by which officials are elected in large, multimember districts according to the proportion of the vote won by their parties--would enliven democratic political debate, increase voter choice and voter turnout, ensure fair representation for third parties and minorities, eliminate wasted votes and "spoliers," and ultimately produce policies that better reflect the public will. Looking beyond new voting machines and other quick fixes for our electoral predicament, this new edition of Real Choices/New Voices offers a timely and imaginative way out of the frustrations of our current system of choosing leaders.
