Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western civilization was for centuries held together by the glue of Christianity, the religion founded upon the teachings and actions of Jesus -- to the extent that it may be possible to infer them from the written record. This book has grown out of the conviction that the methods of history in particular and of the sciences secondarily have not been applied forcefully enough to an investigation of Jesus. We will scrutinize this written record and see how much we actually know. This book is in part a confession - a literary genre that goes back to Augustine, bishop of Hippo in North Africa and Catholic saint. Yet my agenda differs from his. Augustine lived at a time when the Christian Church was beginning to flex its muscles and make bold claims. Today we live in the twilight of the gods, to borrow the title of one of Friedrich Nietzsche's last works. Religion as a general construct peaked long ago, probably before the Enlightenment, and is now in retreat. This period of decline and demise makes essential at long last a realistic treatment of Jesus of Nazareth. As an Italian by birth and upbringing, the author was early baptized into the Catholic Church. Then, his mother died at age 43. He was 15 years old himself, at the time, and didn't know how to reconcile the notion of a good, just, loving God with such a tragedy.Seeking to know whether the Jesus of the written records can withstand the scrutiny of the sciences and history, he eventually found what is the most probative way of examining Jesus, a task that forms the core of this book. A very long time ago, humans had little more than faith to guide them. Chris does not write for that mindset but aims to entertain other methods of understanding what we call reality, with the sciences, philosophy, and history as our guides. He hopes that their rigor will appeal to those who remain intellectually curious and open-minded.

Christians and non-Christians who want to understand the world as it is today have to understand Christianity, too. Christianity makes objective claims, but also presents a new way of thinking about the world. In A Guide to Christianity for Skeptics and Seekers, renowned theologian Dr. John Frame introduces the reader to the Christian religion and its unique intellectual framework, describing the key pillars of Christian thought and how these shape the Christian worldview. Covering a range of topics, from the resurrection to the Christian posture toward politics, A Guide to Christianity for Skeptics and Seekers is a valuable guide to understanding the Christian faith as an intellectual tradition. Useful for both the Christian reader looking for a better understanding of the faith and the skeptical reader who seeks to understand the intellectual tradition that has done much to shape the modern world.

Book excerpt: The Problem of God explores answers to the most difficult questions raised against Christianity. A skeptic who became a Christian and then a pastor, author Mark Clark grew up in an atheistic home. After his father's death, he began a skeptical search for truth through the fields of science, philosophy, and history, eventually finding answers in the last place he expected: Christianity. In a winsome, persuasive, and humble voice, The Problem of God responds to the top ten interrogations people bring against God, and Christianity, including: Does God even exist in the first place? What do we do with Christianity's violent history? Is Jesus just another myth? Can the Bible be trusted? Why should we believe in Hell anymore today? Each chapter answers the specific challenge using a mix of theology, philosophy, and science. Filled with compelling stories and anecdotes, The Problem of God presents an organized and easy-to-understand range of apologetics, focused on both convincing the skeptic and informing the Christian. The book concluding with Christianity's most audacious assertion: how should we respond to Jesus' claim that he is God and the only way to salvation.

Book excerpt: I continued to plow ahead seeking to garner ever more information about cosmology, evolution, the origins and nature of human beings, and comparative religions. I tried to keep an open mind during my pursuit of such knowledge, but also have to admit that I was often testing the tenets of my childhood faith against what I was learning. Reconsider your beliefs and open up a whole new world in Larkin Spivey's compelling new book, A Skeptic's Guide to God. Religious skeptics often find themselves approaching the topic of Christianity as a fact-finding mission-but more information doesn't seem to lead to belief in anything. With his no-nonsense approach, Spivey appeals to the skeptic's unquenchable thirst for knowledge by stressing the facts and logical appeals of one of the world's most influential religions. Chapter by chapter, A Skeptic's Guide to God takes reads through a journey of vivid storytelling and matter-of-fact discussion. While sharing his own personal story, Spivey also reconciles the seemingly incongruent issues of religion and science, clarifies the Bible, answers skeptics' most common objections to Christianity, and assists readers in finding the peace in life that only comes through reconciliation with God.

Parents have a deep desire to pass on their faith, but fear that today's increasingly skeptical and hostile world will eventually lead their kids to reject the truth of Christianity. That leaves many parents feeling overwhelmed--uncertain of what they can do to help their children, given the difficulty and extent of the faith challenges they will face. This practical and timely resource gives parents the confidence of knowing what to discuss with their children and how to discuss it in order to facilitate impactful conversations that will form the basis of a lifelong faith. In a friendly, parent-to-parent voice, Natasha Crain identifies 30 specific conversations about God that parents must have with their children, organizing them under the categories of - the existence of God - science and God - the nature of God - believing in God - the difference God makes Chapters are sequenced in a curriculum-oriented way to provide a cumulative learning experience, making this book a flexible resource for use in multiple settings: homes, church classes, youth groups, small groups, private Christian schools, and homeschools. Every chapter has a step-by-step conversation guide with discussion questions and tips, and content is readily adaptable for use with kids of any age (elementary through high school). Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller people can believe in—by "a pioneer of the new urban Christians" (Christianity Today) and the "C.S. Lewis for the 21st century" (Newsweek). Timothy Keller, the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, addresses the frequent doubts that skeptics, and even ardent believers, have about religion. Using literature, philosophy, real-life conversations, and potent reasoning, Keller explains how the belief in a Christian God is, in fact, a sound and rational one. To true believers he offers a solid platform on which to stand their ground against the backlash to religion created by the Age of Skepticism. And to skeptics, atheists, and agnostics, he provides a challenging argument for pursuing the reason for God.

Book excerpt: If you think the only logical response to bad Christianity is to leave Christianity completely, this book is for you. In an effort to help those who’ve been hurt by or turned off by negative religion, Martin Thielen explains that there is an alternative to abandoning religion: good religion. Thielen uses personal stories to illustrate the dangers of religion that is judgmental, anti-intellectual, and legalistic. While addressing the growth of the new atheism movement and the “Nones” (people that have no religious affiliation), this book argues that leaving religion is not practical, not helpful, and not necessary. Thielen provides counterparts to the characteristics of bad religion, explaining that good religion is grace-filled, promotes love and forgiveness, and is inclusive and hope-filled. This study is perfect for individual, group, or congregational study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is true that mankind himself has probably always been characterized with the main desire to determine just what spiritual truth really is. For centuries and centuries, highly educated philosophers and religious men alike have always stood toe to toe, disagreeing on spiritual truth. Since they cannot all be right, this would strongly indicate that education, religious persuasion, or even intelligence has little to do with our discovery of the real spiritual truth. For if these things were truly critical, then obviously the spiritual/intellectual giants of history would have agreed on spiritual truth long ago. In this work, author Ted Even endeavors to show that the disagreeing intellectuals/skeptics of the past only serve to reinforce Christ's radical statement about our need to just become like little children in order to discover the spiritual truth, and that literally everyone has the same opportunity to enter the kingdom of heaven on that basis. However, while super intelligence or big degrees may not be necessary, the discovery of spiritual truth does require just one very reasonable quality of heart, which little children have always possessed. Find out just what this basic quality of heart is, as you continue your search for spiritual truth within this simple-to-understand work which only leaves the real spiritual truth left standing.

Book excerpt: Find peace in life without blaming God for your pain, even if you're mad at "The Church." Here's how... Does it feel like there's more pain in your life than there should be? Do you catch yourself frequently blaming God when things go wrong? Maybe something traumatic happened in your life to make you question your religious beliefs. According to the Cooperative Congressional Election Study, 31% of Americans are religiously unaffiliated, and I think the question to ask is... why? Many religious skeptics don't believe in God because they don't want to put their faith in the writings of dead men whom they've never met -- and that may sound fair on its surface, but life isn't always so black and white! Have you ever actually asked yourself why you believe what you believe? Is it because you're more inclined to believe what's supposedly backed by science? Or do you just believe what you're told because it's easier to run with the crowd than to think for yourself? It's normal to want to trust popular science and the mainstream media. After all, the information presented is so readily available at the click of a button. However, a healthy dose of skepticism and a willingness to dive deeper into the facts is key to finding the truth. The Bible offers substantially more truth than you might think, especially if you've had a negative experience in church or with so-called "believers" in the past. Keep searching -- whether or not you find the answers you were hoping for, my hope is that you'll find the answers you need. In Pursuing Truth & Finding Jesus, you will discover: Why God doesn't always answer our prayers the way we want Him to A glimpse at why everyone who tries to disprove Christianity can never prove that anything the Bible claims is false Perspective on why pain exists and why it's necessary for your well being The mindset needed to leverage your pain to become stronger and more resilient Key aspects of what it takes to be a free-thinker in order for you to discover the truth How you can massively reduce limiting beliefs and open your mind and heart And much more. If you're hesitant because of your current perception of Christianity, you may not yet fully understand the beautiful truths that come from studying Christ's life, death and resurrection. Pursuing Truth & Finding Jesus isn't here to convert you -- it will simply guide you towards a greater understanding of who God is as Father and who Jesus is as Saviour. It's time to stop believing everything you're told and become an honest skeptic, willing to learn and grow.
