Book Synopsis God the Economist by : M. Douglas Meeks

Book excerpt: God does not appear in the modern market. For most economists this is as it should be. It is in no way necessary, according to modern economic theory, to consider God when thinking about economy. Indeed, the absence of God in economic matters is viewed as necessary to the great advances in modern economy. The difficulty with modern market economies, however, is that human livelihood is also left out of the theory and practice of the market economy. ?"I propose to bring the church's teaching about God, the doctrine of the Trinity, to bear on the masked connections between God and economy. I will treat the Trinity as the way of understanding what the Bible calls the 'economy of God.'?
Book Synopsis Economics as Religion by : Robert H. Nelson
Download or read book Economics as Religion written by Robert H. Nelson and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Nelson’s Reaching for Heaven on Earth, Economics as Religion, and The New Holy Wars: Economic Religion Versus Environmental Religion in Contemporary America read almost like a trilogy, exploring and charting the boundaries of theology and economics from the Western foundations of ancient Greece through the traditions that Nelson identifies as “Protestant” and “Roman,” and on into modern economic forms such as Marxism and capitalism, as well as environmentalism. Nelson argues that economics can be a genuine form of religion and that it should inform our understanding of the religious developments of our times. This edition of Economics as Religion situates the influence of his work in the scholarly economic and theological conversations of today and reflects on the state of the economics profession and the potential implications for theology, economics, and other social sciences.

Book Synopsis Science and the Trinity by : John Polkinghorne
Download or read book Science and the Trinity written by John Polkinghorne and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most often, the dialogue between religion and science is initiated by the discoveries of modern science—big bang cosmology, evolution, or quantum theory, for example. In this book, scientist-theologian John Polkinghorne changes the discussion. He approaches the dialogue from a little-explored perspective in which theology shapes the argument and sets the agenda of questions to be considered. The author begins with a review of approaches to science and religion in which the classification focuses on theological content rather than on methodological technique. He then proceeds with chapters discussing the role of Scripture, a theology of nature, the doctrine of God, sacramental theology, and eschatology. Throughout, Polkinghorne takes the perspective of Trinitarian thinking while arguing in a style that reflects the influence of his career as a theoretical physicist. In the final chapter, the author defends the appropriateness of addressing issues of science and religion from the specific standpoint of his Christian belief. His book provides an important model for theologians and scientists alike, showing how their two fields can inform one another in significant ways.

Book Synopsis Is There Evidence for God? by : Robert Genetski
Download or read book Is There Evidence for God? written by Robert Genetski and published by Rga/Classicalprinciples. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sooner or later every thinking person wonders about God. Does God exist, or is he simply a figment of our imagination? If God exists, what is he like? For most of my life, my answers were based on what others had told me. Although I was curious about God and religion, I never took the time and effort necessary to explore such matters. As an economist who has written five books, I had spent more than half a century researching complex economic issues. I decided it was time to embark on what would become my most ambitious project ever, the search for evidence for God and answers to the big questions in life. While there are many ways to search for God, my approach had to be different. It would be logical and systematic. I would approach the project as Mr. Spock, the fictional character from Star Trek, who would meticulously examine evidence, weigh the odds, and reach a logical conclusion. My approach involved examining atheists' views, looking into evidence for life after death, searching for the evidence surrounding the world's religions, and exploring post-Biblical evidence for God. My quest lasted many years. It had all the sensations of an Indiana Jones movie-frightening discoveries, sleepless nights, and fulfilling Ah-ha! moments with background music. There were unpleasant moments when I became terribly discouraged and depressed, times when I wanted to throw in the towel, took time off and even considered quitting. This book takes you through my search for the evidence for God. If you decide to come along, I must warn you-a quest for evidence of God can produce some disturbing discoveries. If you are anything like me, there will be times you will wish you never started, times you question long-held beliefs, times you want to quit, and times you'll be glad you didn't. I invite you to join me on what became the journey of a lifetime, my search for evidence for God.

Download or read book Economics Today written by Donald A. Hay and published by Regent College Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics has assumed a dominant role in shaping our modern world. In this book, Donald Hay develops a critique of economics today in the light of a Christian understanding of truth. The author's purpose is to equip the reader with arguments and principles with which to confront new economic problems, as well as to analyse our present situation. Case studies take the arguments and apply them to particular areas of economic analysis. Amongst influential cases illuminated by Donald Hay's study are the free market of capitalism and the planned economy of socialism. He analyses macro-economic policy in the advanced industrial economies, the vexed question of relations between rich and poor nations, and the consequences of economic growth. This book gives an exposition of economics as it is practised in the West. It also provides an insight into the underlying beliefs of economists when they pronounce on public policy issues which affect all of our lives. Donald Hay is a Fellow and Tutor in Economics at Jesus College, Oxford, and a Reader in the Church of England.
Book Synopsis Twilight of the Money Gods by : John Rapley
Download or read book Twilight of the Money Gods written by John Rapley and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine one day you went to a cash-machine and found your money was gone. You rushed to your branch, where a teller said that overnight people had stopped believing in money, and it all vanished. Seem incredible? It happened, and it could happen again. Twilight of the Money Gods is the story of economics, told not as the science it strove to be, but as the religion it became. Over two centuries, it searched for the hidden codes which would reveal the path to a promised land of material abundance. While its prophets, from Adam Smith to John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman, concerned themselves with the human condition, its priesthood gradually grew remote from its followers, until it lost sight of their tribulations. Today, amid a crisis of faith in their expertise, we must re-imagine an economics for a new era - one filled with both danger and opportunity.
Book Synopsis Economics of Good and Evil by : Tomas Sedlacek
Download or read book Economics of Good and Evil written by Tomas Sedlacek and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomas Sedlacek has shaken the study of economics as few ever have. Named one of the "Young Guns" and one of the "five hot minds in economics" by the Yale Economic Review, he serves on the National Economic Council in Prague, where his provocative writing has achieved bestseller status. How has he done it? By arguing a simple, almost heretical proposition: economics is ultimately about good and evil. In The Economics of Good and Evil, Sedlacek radically rethinks his field, challenging our assumptions about the world. Economics is touted as a science, a value-free mathematical inquiry, he writes, but it's actually a cultural phenomenon, a product of our civilization. It began within philosophy--Adam Smith himself not only wrote The Wealth of Nations, but also The Theory of Moral Sentiments--and economics, as Sedlacek shows, is woven out of history, myth, religion, and ethics. "Even the most sophisticated mathematical model," Sedlacek writes, "is, de facto, a story, a parable, our effort to (rationally) grasp the world around us." Economics not only describes the world, but establishes normative standards, identifying ideal conditions. Science, he claims, is a system of beliefs to which we are committed. To grasp the beliefs underlying economics, he breaks out of the field's confines with a tour de force exploration of economic thinking, broadly defined, over the millennia. He ranges from the epic of Gilgamesh and the Old Testament to the emergence of Christianity, from Descartes and Adam Smith to the consumerism in Fight Club. Throughout, he asks searching meta-economic questions: What is the meaning and the point of economics? Can we do ethically all that we can do technically? Does it pay to be good? Placing the wisdom of philosophers and poets over strict mathematical models of human behavior, Sedlacek's groundbreaking work promises to change the way we calculate economic value.
