Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Is Christianity Christian? Is Christianity Christian? Was written thir teen years ago and published in The Buckeye News a weekly paper of Nelsonville, Ohio. I thought when I was writing it that it would be received with favor, but it created a storm instead that I could not face. As will appear, on examination, it was writ ten, in part, to show that the tendency of the times away from the teachings of Jesus Christ would result in just such a war as has been devastating the earth. I was laughed at for this prediction and ridiculed by people of thought and under standing, who insisted that we were entering upon an era of universal peace. My prediction no doubt did seem preposterous to most people at that time. But the war is on and whether my reasoning as to the cause of it is accepted or not, the fact that it has come cannot be disputed. It is no more destructive than I foresaw and said that it would be. It did not need a great deal of perspicacity for one who had proved the religion of Christ to see that the way men and nations were trampling on one another's rights must end in a world wide conflict. It was the logical thing to expect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Is Christ The aim of this handbook is to present in a short, popular form the substance of what has been written in recent years on the central subject of Christianity the Person and Work of Christ. It is intended to pro vide materials for answering a question which has often been raised of late, What is Christianity? For some time past there have been clear indications that the question of the Personality of Jesus Christ is being re examined and re-considered, and that once again it has become in a very definite way the center of oppo sition to Christianity. It is hoped that this summary of the Christian position as stated by its leading modern exponents will prove of service to theological students and younger clergy, as well as to the men and women in our churches who are brought face to face with va rions attacks on the Christian faith. A bibliography of the best works is appended, and the present manual is little more than the substance of these in outline for general use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability. Christian Evidences We do not mean, of course, to assert that it is improper to develop one or another line of evidence to the exclusion, for the time, of other lines. This is often most desirable. We think, however, it is un fortunate to attempt to discredit any of the well established forms of the argument for Christianity merely because some particular form happens for the moment to be unpopular. In the end more is lost than is gained by the procedure. The attempt is made in the succeeding pages to state the argument for Christian belief from the four leading standpoints. The aim has been to put the case as clearly and with as little of the formal and technical in language and style as the nature of the subject would admit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Christianity: Or Old Truths Restated It has long been a cherished hope of the author that he might be able to state the great essential doctrines of the common salvation - that is, the saving truths of the gospel - in such form as would commend them to the judgment and the cordial acceptation of God's chil dren in all evangelical denominations. This volume is the contribution of a Presbyterian to that wider Christian ity of the ancient past, and also of the future, in which it is hoped all evangelical Christians will ere long stand nearer together than they now stand, because they will learn to look less at their points of difference and more at the great principles of their common salvation. What the world needs is a living Christianity, and the Church can render it no better service than by proclaiming anew those old truths which are vital and saving. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Can We Still Be Christians? Since a book like this has a decidedly personal note, it seems fitting that I should devote a few words to setting forth my personal position in the matter. Influenced by the sombre side of life, I was keenly interested in religious problems from very early days; but at the same time I could never come into friendly relation with the Churches, and I never thought of entering their ministry. Later on, indeed, when philosophy became my life-work, I sought to suppress the religious interest altogether, else I should scarcely have devoted myself so assiduously to a study of Aristotle and philosophical terminology. The old interest, however, would not die, and ever and anon it broke out again, even in the midst of my philosophical pursuits. But the old problem also remained: In the light of our freer convictions, what attitude can we take up, and ought we to take up, towards Christianity? For a long time it has been on my mind to speak out on this subject, but again and again I have postponed the task in the hope of being able to treat it more worthily as years brought me added experience, and to undertake more confidently the no slight responsibility involved in such treatment. It seems to me now, however, that the time has at length come when I should carry out my intention. For, as regards myself, old age draws near, and there is no knowing how long I may still be fresh enough for work. Then, too, the time is ripe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, Thomas Oden's Systematic Theology classic series (individually titled The Living God, The Word of Life, and Life in the Spirit) is available in one complete volume. A renowned theologian, Oden provides a consensus view of the Christian faith, delving deeply into ancient Christian tradition and bringing to the contemporary church the best wisdom from its past. In this magisterial work, Oden tackles the central questions of Christian belief and the nature of the trinity. Written for clergy, Christian educators, religious scholars, and lay readers alike, Classic Christianity provides the best synthesis of the whole history of Christian thought. Part one explores the most intriguing questions of the study of God—Does God exist? Does Jesus reveal God? Is God personal, compassionate, free?—and presents answers that reflect the broad consensus culled from the breadth of the church's teachers. It is rooted deeply and deliberately in scripture but confronts the contemporary mind with the vitality of the Christian tradition. Part two addresses the perplexing Christological issues of whether God became flesh, whether God became Christ, and whether Christ is the source of salvation. Oden details the core beliefs concerning Jesus Christ that have been handed down for the last two hundred decades, namely, who he was, what he did, and what that means for us today. Part three examines how the work of God in creation and redemption is being brought to consummation by the Holy Spirit in persons, through communities, and in the fullness of human destiny. Oden's magisterial study not only treats the traditional elements of systematical theology but also highlights the foundational exegetes throughout history. Covering the ecumenical councils and early synods; the great teachers of the Eastern church tradition, including Athanasius and John Chrysostom; and the prominent Western figures such as Augustine, Ambrose, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, and John Calvin, this book offers the reader the fullest understanding of the Christian faith available.

The author is just presumptuous enough to indulge the hope that his book may do some good. That has been his Object in writing it, if he understands himself. Whether there is need for it the Christian public must judge. The author, at least, thinks there is. Some imagine that the British Isles were visited by one of the Apostles of our Lord. Others, that missionaries went from Gaul. While not a few look upon St. Augustine as the great missionary to the Britons, and suppose that little was done for their conversion before he landed on their shores. On the contrary, as we propose to shoAv, Christianity had a foothold in Britain some 400 years before St. Augustines day and continued to hold its ground imder the same auspices The Roman Catholic Church for more than 900 years after his arrival. In order to give the historic facts their true setting, we have hastily sketched the progress of the Christian Churches from the end of the first century to the beginning of the twentieth. From the time when Revelation ceased and the Bible became a completed book, to the time when it speaks in 456 tongues to the nations of the world in accents that proclaim its Divine origin. Book excerpt: According to the media, the church is rapidly shrinking, both in numbers and in effectiveness. But the good news is, much of the bad news is wrong. Sociologist Bradley R. E. Wright uncovers what's really happening in the church: evangelicals are more respected by secular culture now than they were ten years ago; divorce rates of Christians are lower than those who aren't affiliated with a religion; young evangelicals are active in the faith. Wright reveals to readers why and how statistics are distorted, and shows that God is still effectively working through his people today.
