Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation Practice Among Fruit Growers on the Pacific Coast The map is intended to give a general view of the distribution of irrigation practice. It is not claimed, of course, that all the land included in each color division is suited for fruit growing nor that irrigation facilities have been developed to the extent indicated. It is, however, approximately true that wherever suitable fruit soils exist and the land is topographically adapted to fruit growing the practice must as a rule conform to that prescribed for the region. It is true also that here and there, so far as Settlement and development have proceeded, fruit is actually being grown on a commercial scale with or without irrigation, as indicated, in the different regions on the map. The breadth of the data on which the map rests is sug gested by the tabulations which will follow. These data, supple mented by the writer's personal acquaintance with the facts, justify the separation of the included territory into three divisions, as follows. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation by Overhead Sprinkling Although the irrigation of truck crops by overhead sprinkling has long been a common practice in some parts of the United States, with some citrus fruits irrigated this way in Florida, the application of water by overhead sprinkling has but recently become a factor in California orchard irrigation practice. Though scattered installations which have been in operation for some years are to be found in various parts of the State, the majority now in operation have been established since 1924. Before 1920 it was limited primarily to truck cr0ps, nurseries, and small fruits, and was practiced mainly as supplemental irrigation in the more humid regions. Stationary overhead sprinkler systems were first used in citrus orchards in some sections of California about 1920. Most of such systems were installed, however, between 1924 and 1928 in areas where surface irrigation was not entirely satisfactory because of unusually pervious soil or because of topographic features. Along the foothills east of Pasadena, the soil is gravelly in many places and the slopes are rather steep for furrow irrigation, except where orchards are laid out on contour grades; overhead sprinkling of orchards had its inception in these areas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Fruit Growing in California This circular is designed for those who wish to grow fruit and nuts on a small scale for their own use and not for those who may grow fruit as a business. Although nearly all the fruits that the amateur can hope to produce are already available in our home markets, many of us desire to raise something of our own. As a matter of economics, home fruit grow ing is a poor investment; but happily, no matter how much we may try to convince ourselves to the contrary, we grow home fruits not for mone tary gain but as a labor of love. There is a pride of possession in produc ing some nice fruit, for it can be done; but the work is primarily a sport or recreation. It is the creative instinct that makes us want to dig in the soil and plant something. The fructifying soil holds great mystery for us all. As most people know, growing things out of the earth is a gamble, where skill and chance combine to make a most fascinating game. If we persist until we acquire skill and wisdom; study our plants, treat them properly, protect them from their enemies, we may be rewarded with all the fruit we can use and (best of all) with some to present to our friends, which is the sweetest of all rewards for the amateur. As already mentioned, this publication is intended to help the begin ner. Whereas practically all of our books and experiment-station publi cations on the subject were written for commercial fruit growers, this circular is frankly for the amateur, and all the discussions will be from his standpoint. The professional orchardist is always cautioned, for ex ample, to select a site having the climate, soil, water, and marketing facilities that will promote his financial success. The homeowner, on the other hand, must use the site he has, whether all conditions are fav crable or not. His back yard may be only a second or a third-rate location for fruit, but he wants to use it. Fortunately, practices unjustifiable on a large scale may be followed in a small way: Poor soil can be greatly modified and ameliorated if one will go to the necessary trouble and ex pense. To provide for a few trees only, a swampy spot may be reclaimed, an unfavorable soil or subsoil completely made over. Individual fruits or even whole clusters may be protected against diseases and insects by enclosing them in bags made of paper, gauze, or cellophane. Even the mean temperature for a few trees may be raised considerably in a cold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Irrigation of Citrus Groves: March 1922 There are many complex and as yet unsolved problems connected with irrigation in semiarid regions. As will be shown later, the method employed in the application of Water may be the deciding factor between success and failure of crops. In order to obtain the best results, a careful study of the water requirements of the crops grown and of the best method of applying the water should be made. Similar soils under different atmospheric conditions may require variations in the irrigation practice. The rates of transpiration by the crop and evaporation from'the surface of the soil are probably much greater in the interior sections of California than in the coastal regions, because the temperature and aridity of the former are higher than of the latter. These factors. May determine, in consider able measure, the times of application and the amount of water needed. Wide differences occur in the soil conditions in different sections. The method of irrigation best suited to heavy soils may differ from that Of light Sandy soils, for the reason that the former type tends to restrict the movement of Water, while the latter permits freer percolation and in turn gives up the water more readily. The content of colloidal material may vary in soils which have the same wilting coefficient as determined by the centrifuge method. A soil which contains an appreciable amount of colloidal material will swell or expand upon being wetted. This swelling tends to retard the movement of water and also reduces aeration. A differ ence in the swelling may be brought about not only by a difference in the amount of colloid present, but also by a difference. In the nature of the colloid. Consequently, two soils, although they may have the same water holding capacity as judged by the centrifuge method, may act in an entirely different manner when wetted. Generally speaking, the practice of irrigation in the citrus groves of California has followed certain arbitrary rules, especially in regard to the frequency of application and the amount of water applied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paper on the Irrigation Laws and Decisions of California This paper was prepared for insertion in a work on the History of the Bench and Bar of California, of which it forms but a very small part. It contains some discus sion of questions growing out of a live and important subject in this State, and with the permission of the pub lishers, at whose instance it was prepared, it is also is sued in this form for more convenient practical use, if found to be useful. It is not intended as a full or com prehensive treatment of the important questions consid ered, nor are all the authorities attempted to be re viewed, or even cited. The purpose for which it was written would not allow of any such extended treatment. But it is hoped that it may be found interesting, and to some extent useful, to those having an interest in the ir rigation laws of the State. And who is there in the State that has not such an interest? It is believed that there is no more important and far-reaching question, or one which affects more nearly, or more extensively, the best interests and prosperity of the whole State. Such a treatment would require a book in itself. The student has been re ferred to his local experimental station and college of agriculture for information concerning the Insects and diseases Of importance in his community. Emphasis in this book has been placed rather on the mechanics Of the use and application Of materials for control, including a full discussion Of machinery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Underground Water for Irrigation at Pomona, Cal Much of the water used for irrigation in southern California is pumped from wells, and there are no sections where water is used more economically. This fact has been brought about by a strong combination of influences. One of these is the characteristics of the settlers themselves, who are mostly people of means and education, having come from Eastern States to enjoy the climate and other attractions for which the section is noted. Professional men, busi ness men, and farmers alike have come to lead a retired life and to engage in fruit growing, which 'appealed to them as a method by which they can augment their means and at the same time live a more independent and outdoor life devoid of the hard labor of their former occupations.
