Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Irrigation Practice on the Pacific Coast It is chiefly for the benefit of this class that this Guide has been prepared. The limited space available will not admit of anything like a full discussion of important topics, but references have been made to other publications, which the reader may consult. Many of these are the publications of the Irrigation and Drainage branch of the Office of Experiment Stations, U. S. Department of Agriculture. Where these are referred to herein, the abbreviation "O. E. S." is used. These bulletins may be had on application to Dr. A. C. True, Director O. E. S., Washington, D. C. Owing to the somewhat wide difference in climate, products, and irrigation practice between the Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast States, it was deemed advisable to adapt the first publication of this series to Pacific Coast conditions. How to Select an Irrigated Farm. The chief points to be considered in selecting an irrigated farm are a healthful and agreeable climate, the adaptability of the location to grow profitable crops, proximity to railroads, towns and markets, the fertility of the soil, a plentiful supply of water, and good drainage. On the Pacific Coast the winters are mild. January, February and March are rainy months, and the long summers are dry. Near the Coast the climate in summer is cool, while farther inland it is warm. One of the most marked advantages favoring the man who improves an irrigated farm is its probable increase in value. When a 40-acre tract can be purchased for $3,000, and in ten years increased in value to $10,000, the owner is making good profits in addition to the crops harvested. In order to reap the benefits of good harvests and an increase in farm values, the crops chosen for a given location must be those best adapted to soil and climate. Perhaps the best test of raw land in its desert state is the native vegetation it supports. Sage-brush, buffalo grass and cactus indicate good land easily worked and well drained. Ink weed, salt bush and salt grass indicate heavier soil, apt to bake when wet, and charged with more or less alkali. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Information on Irrigation for British Columbia Fruit Growers Measurements made in the United States show that on most irrigation systems consisting mainly of unlined canals excavated in earth, the losses in conveyance from the leaky ditches amounts to about'50' per cent. Of the water diverted from the source of supply, and of the remaining 50 per cent. From one third to one half is lost by evaporation, percolation and other wastes due largely to crude methods of irrigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation by Overhead Sprinkling Although the irrigation of truck crops by overhead sprinkling has long been a common practice in some parts of the United States, with some citrus fruits irrigated this way in Florida, the application of water by overhead sprinkling has but recently become a factor in California orchard irrigation practice. Though scattered installations which have been in operation for some years are to be found in various parts of the State, the majority now in operation have been established since 1924. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies on the Irrigation of Citrus Groves: March 1922 There are many complex and as yet unsolved problems connected with irrigation in semiarid regions. As will be shown later, the method employed in the application of Water may be the deciding factor between success and failure of crops. In order to obtain the best results, a careful study of the water requirements of the crops grown and of the best method of applying the water should be made. Similar soils under different atmospheric conditions may require variations in the irrigation practice. The rates of transpiration by the crop and evaporation from'the surface of the soil are probably much greater in the interior sections of California than in the coastal regions, because the temperature and aridity of the former are higher than of the latter. These factors. May determine, in consider able measure, the times of application and the amount of water needed. Wide differences occur in the soil conditions in different sections. The method of irrigation best suited to heavy soils may differ from that Of light Sandy soils, for the reason that the former type tends to restrict the movement of Water, while the latter permits freer percolation and in turn gives up the water more readily. The content of colloidal material may vary in soils which have the same wilting coefficient as determined by the centrifuge method. A soil which contains an appreciable amount of colloidal material will swell or expand upon being wetted. This swelling tends to retard the movement of water and also reduces aeration. A differ ence in the swelling may be brought about not only by a difference in the amount of colloid present, but also by a difference. In the nature of the colloid. Consequently, two soils, although they may have the same water holding capacity as judged by the centrifuge method, may act in an entirely different manner when wetted. Generally speaking, the practice of irrigation in the citrus groves of California has followed certain arbitrary rules, especially in regard to the frequency of application and the amount of water applied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Irrigation and Cultivation of Orchards The fruit grower is interested in soil moisture from the standpoint of plant growth rather than a consideration of the physical forces involved in its occurrence and behavior. In this circular it is pro posed, therefore, to speak of soil moisture from the viewpoint of its availability to plants. A clear understanding of some of the terms used will aid in the discussions which follow. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
