This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On top of a decade of exacerbated disaster loss, exceptional global heat, retreating ice and rising sea levels, humanity and our food security face a range of new and unprecedented hazards, such as megafires, extreme weather events, desert locust swarms of magnitudes previously unseen, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Agriculture underpins the livelihoods of over 2.5 billion people – most of them in low-income developing countries – and remains a key driver of development. At no other point in history has agriculture been faced with such an array of familiar and unfamiliar risks, interacting in a hyperconnected world and a precipitously changing landscape. And agriculture continues to absorb a disproportionate share of the damage and loss wrought by disasters. Their growing frequency and intensity, along with the systemic nature of risk, are upending people’s lives, devastating livelihoods, and jeopardizing our entire food system. This report makes a powerful case for investing in resilience and disaster risk reduction – especially data gathering and analysis for evidence informed action – to ensure agriculture’s crucial role in achieving the future we want.

Book Synopsis Mapping drought patterns and impacts: a global perspective by : Nishadi Eriyagama
Download or read book Mapping drought patterns and impacts: a global perspective written by Nishadi Eriyagama and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the global pattern and impacts of droughts through mapping several drought-related characteristics - either at a country level or at regular grid scales. It appears that arid and semi-arid areas also tend to have a higher probability of drought occurrence. It is illustrated that the African continent is lagging behind the rest of the world on many indicators related to drought-preparedness and that agricultural economies, overall, are much more vulnerable to adverse societal impacts of meteorological droughts. The study also examines the ability of various countries to satisfy their water needs during droughts using storage-related indices.

This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New evidence this year corroborates the rise in world hunger observed in this report last year, sending a warning that more action is needed if we aspire to end world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. Updated estimates show the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to prevailing levels from almost a decade ago. Although progress continues to be made in reducing child stunting, over 22 percent of children under five years of age are still affected. Other forms of malnutrition are also growing: adult obesity continues to increase in countries irrespective of their income levels, and many countries are coping with multiple forms of malnutrition at the same time – overweight and obesity, as well as anaemia in women, and child stunting and wasting.

Book Synopsis Rainfed Agriculture by : Suhas Pralhad Wani
Download or read book Rainfed Agriculture written by Suhas Pralhad Wani and published by CABI. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rainfed agriculture is generally overlooked by development investors, researchers and policy makers due to limited confidence in its ability to increase agricultural production and development. However, research undertaken by a team of leading scientists from global organizations demonstrates its potential in achieving food security, improving livelihoods and most importantly addressing issues of equity and poverty reduction in dryland areas - the hot spots of poverty. On the basis of case studies from varied agricultural and ecological regions in Asia and Africa, chapters discuss the need for adopting new paradigms between rainfed and irrigated agriculture, catchment/micro-watershed management approaches, upgrades in science-based development and more investments in rainfed areas. Yield gaps for major rainfed crops are analysed globally and possible ways and means including technological, social, and institutional options to bridge the yield gaps are discussed in detail. Covering areas such as rainwater harvesting and its efficient use, the rehabilitation of degraded land and assessment methods for social, environmental and economic impacts, this book will be necessary for both academics and policy makers working in water management, agriculture and sustainable development.

Book Synopsis The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2003 by :
Download or read book The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2003 written by and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition of this publication provides the latest estimates of the number of chronically hungry people in the world and reports on global and national efforts to achieve the World Food Summit (WFS) target of halving hunger levels by the year 2015. It also considers the impact on food security of a range of factors including: the HIV/AIDS pandemic, improved management of water resources, and the increasing integration of developing countries into international markets and trade agreements. The report identifies encouraging signs of progress towards the WFS target, with some developing countries having adopted a twin-track strategy for tackling hunger levels by combining immediate food interventions with longer term development initiatives to increase employment, incomes and food production in impoverished communities. However, these countries are more the exception than the rule, with estimates indicating that the number of undernourished people across the developing world has risen by 4.5 million each year over the most recent four year period for which data is available. Overall, the report highlights the fact that the WFS goal is still within reach, but without a redoubled national and global commitment it is unlikely to be achieved.
