Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigated Farm Pastures for the State of Utah Enough land should be devoted to the growing of pasture to provide grazing for all livestock kept on the farm. Among factors which influence the adaptability of various species of pasture grasses and legumes and the carrying capacity are type and depth of soil, depth to water table, soil fertility, availability and reliability of the irrigation water supply, drainage, alkali concentration, max imum.and m.inimum temperatures and length of growing season. In the higher elevations of the State with an ample supply of irrigation water and a wellndrained, highl, productive soil, carrying capacities as high as 5 animals oer acre for a period of 5 months have been reported. It is necessary that.the farm planner anti01pate the expected results when planning a pasture. In general where there is ample irri gatien water and good soil, 3 animal units per acre for the duration of the growing season can be anticipated in the higher elevations. Likewise for the lower elevations such as exist in the vicinity of St. George, 2 to 3 animal units per acre for the growing period can be'safely antici pated. If irrigation water is limited during any or all of the growin season or other factors are present which will influence production, carrying capacity estimates should be adjusted accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irrigation of the Uintah Indian Reservation, Utah Irrigation compels the adoption of the small farm unit. This is the gem of its new Social possibilities. During the first and second eras of colonization in this country, the favorite size of a farm was about four hundred acres, of which from a fourth to a half was gradually cleared and the rest retained in woodland. The Mississippi valley was settled mostly in quarter-sections, contain - ing one hundred and sixty acres each. The productive capacitv of land is so largely increased by irrigation, and the amount which one family can cultivate by its own labor consequently so much reduced, that the small farm unit is a practical necessity in the arid region. Where settlement has been carried out upon the most enlightened lines irrigated farms range from five to twenty acres, rarely exceeding forth acres at the maximum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Strawberry Valley Irrigation Project, Utah East Bench Irrigation and Manufacturing Company were the first' to investigate the matter of diverting unused waters. They met with unsurmountable obstacles and discouragement at every turn. There were private ownerships of water to contend with and there were State regulations which prohibited the impounding of water in the feasible localities. The first bit of success attending the researches of this sturdy company was the diversion of water from White River into the Spanish Fork River channel, 1896. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irrigation Statistics of the Territory of Utah, With Matters Relative Thereto: Compiled and Prepared for the Irrigation Congress, to Be Held at Salt Lake City, Utah, September 15, 16, 17, 1891 As now ascertained the average first cost of water right in Utah, per acre, is noticeably great, being largely due to the manner in which the ditches and canals are made. Nearly all are laid out and constructed by farmers of ordinary education, without the use of surveying instruments. As a consequence, few of the more important works laid out in this manner have proved serviceable without great changes, involving in many instances the reconstruction of almost the entire system. The perseverance shown in many of these cases is remarkable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumptive Use and Irrigation Water Requirements of Milford Valley, Utah Consumptive use has been defined as The sum of the volumes of water used by vegetative growth of a given area in transpiration and building of plant tissue. And that evaporated from adjacent soil. Snow. Or intercepted precipitation. It is the amount of water that is changed from a liquid to a gaseous state within an area because of evaporation and/or transpiration. The consumptive water requirement of a cr0p grown at one location has been found to be about the same as needed for that same cr0p at some other location providing the climatic conditions are similar. Also. The source of the water. Whether fran natural rainfall. Ground water. Or surface irrigation. Has little effect on the amount required to produce a good yield. Providing fertility. Disease. Insects or other factors are not limiting growth and production. Therefore. The more usable rainfall. The less the need for irrigation. And. Even though excess irrigation water is applied. Actual consumption remains about the same. The excess either returns to the natural water supply of the basin or is consumed on lands other than those originally irrigated. This explains the great amount of return flow which occurs in many of our western river systems. As with the Sevier River in central Utah. The flow may be completely diverted for irrigation at various points. But downstream a few miles from each diversion a g od size flow will again occur. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seepage Water of Northern Utah Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a paper entitled Seepage Waters of Northern Utah, by Samuel Fortier, professor of irrigation engineering at the Agricultural College at Logan, Utah. The facts herein presented are based upon field work carried on mainly during the summer of 1896, and have special value in illustrating conditions which prevail to a greater or less degree throughout all irrigated lands, especially within inclosed valleys or on long, narrow drainage systems. One of. The matters which most complicate and embarrass the adjudication of water rights and the strict enforcement of priorities of appropriation arises from the fact that a considerable volume of water available for irrigation during the critical season of the year, when the crops are maturing, comes from the. Seepage from lands higher upstream to which water has been applied earlier in the year. In some cases these lands have been irrigated in defiance of a strict construction of the law regarding the priority of right to use water, but it has been claimed that such use, instead of being a detriment to the lands below, has been a benefit, and, in 'fact, that there has been more water available in consequence of this use than could other wise be had. The determination of these matters requires careful measurement and study in each case, but the work of Professor For tier serves to indicate what may be expected under similar conditions and illustrates methods applicable to this examination. Corresponding values given in the table are considerably above the average of the irrigated portion of the State. In many parts both water and land are cheap, and careless methods of farming are practiced. The land is not properly cultivated and much of the water applied does more harm than good. Farmers seem to prefer to go to the expense and trouble of cultivating 100 acres in a slipshod manner for half a crop rather than to farm 50 acres in a skill ful way for a full crop. The figures of crop yields, however, repre sent with a fair degree of accuracy what can be accomplished when care and skill are exercised in cultivating the soil and applying the water. In the Humid Region of the Columbia the agricultural lands are largely covered by great forests, and for this reason settlements will pro gress slowly, as the lands must be cleared of their timber. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasture Improvement in Upshur County Although it is possible to express results of pasture treatment either in terms of total yield, of total digestible nutrients, or of pounds gain in the case of feeding trials, this gives only a part of the story from an economic viewpoint. With so many variables involved, there is yet to be worked out a satisfactory conversion factor which will truly ex press all of the benefits or values of pasture treatment in terms of money evaluation. It was pointed out that the tests in this experiment were on a farm basis and not on a plot basis. There were many factors which could not be accurately controlled such as soil type, slope, exposure, rate of application, exact boundaries of treatment etc. The chief value of this study lies ln showing, not what results might be obtained experimentally on uniform plots but what results actually were obtained on farms under operating conditions. Farmers were convinced of the value of pasture improvement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
