Book excerpt: RTNS-II was built to provide a deuterium-tritium neutron source for the study of fusion neutron effects. In the quest to apply fusion to commercial power production, the specific mission of RTNS-II is threefold: to acquire direct engineering data for near-term confinement experiments and for materials that will see moderate neutron dose in future reactor systems; to measure production rates of transmutants and to develop appropriate radiation-resistant instrumentation for fusion systems; and to study the radiation-induced property changes caused by fusion neutrons. RTNS-II comprises two independent sources of 14-MeV neutrons. This is the third annual report summarizing irradiation experiments at RTNS-II. It covers calendar year 1983, and includes reports of all irradiation results, both fusion and non-fusion related. These comprise both secondary (or ''add-on'') and primary irradiations. Each summary article has been submitted by the investigator and has been altered only to meet the style and format requirements of this report.

Joint support and utilization of the facility by Japan and the US has been in effect for nearly 1 1/2 years. Irradiations, using the fusion neutrons produced at RTNS-II, are done in support of the fusion energy programs of the US and Japan. In addition, add-on non-fusion related irradiations can and have been done at RTNS-II.

Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II) facility produces 14-MeV neutrons for materials damage studies. Initial operation for irradiations, which occurred in 1979, began with a neutron source strength of 1013 n/s utilizing one of the accelerator-based neutron sources. Details are given on improvements which have resulted in both increased neutron production and neutron source strength and improved control and monitoring. 8 references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the several RTNS-II irradation programs is to maximize information gained from the small test volume available in this unique irradiation facility for application in the fusion materials program. While this facility provides the highest 14 MeV neutron flux available, the flux is generally too low and the irradiation volume too small for testing of engineering materials. Emphasis, therefore, is on identifying damage mechanisms of high energy neutrons and correlating them quantitatively with effects produced by fission neutrons. The information gained will be used to evaluate and calibrate damage and correlation models under development. The scope of the program includes in-situ experiments, postirradiation experiments, irradiation temperatures ranging from 4°K to 1,000°K, and fluences ranging from 3 x 1016 to about 3 x 1019 n/cm2.

Book excerpt: Fusion materials irradiations in reactors, T(d, n), and Be(d, n) neutron sources currently require accurate flux and spectral measurements to characterize the irradiation in terms of displacement damage and gas production. The multiple-foil activation technique is described with emphasis on routinely obtainable accuracy as well as the most outstanding problems and nuclear data needs.

Book excerpt: Comparison is made of data on mechanical properties of high-purity iron single crystals irradiated with fission neutrons at the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) and 14-MeV D-T neutrons at the Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II) at low fluences below 1022 n/m2. Both irradiations below 363 K led to irradiation hardening and the suppression of a hump appearing on the temperature dependence of yield stress of unirradiated high-purity iron, which suggests that radiation-induced defects formed at low temperatures significantly influence thermally activated deformation of iron.

Book excerpt: Some of the basic computational features of a computer program used for modeling radiation damage at LLL's Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-I) are presented. Input items required are material cross-section and angular distribution data, such as used for LLL neutron transport calculations, along with one particular neutron spectrum of interest. The nuclear reactions considered are elastic, neutron-emitting, and charged-particle-emitting. Classical and relativistic mechanics are used as required to calculate the resulting primary-recoil energy spectra and damage energy spectra. Calculative results are presented for the RTNS-I neutron spectra on aluminum, titanium, vanadium, iron, nickel, copper, zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, silver, tin, tantalum, tungsten, gold, and lead. 63 figures.

Book excerpt: Two of eight differently prepared copper stabilizer samples, previously irradiated in the RTNS-II at LLNL, the IPNS-1 and the BSR at ORNL, have been irradiated to a fluence of 1.33 x 1022 n/m2 at RTNS-II. During the course of the irradiation the samples were periodically removed (without warming) for measurements of the transverse magnetoresistance and returned for continued irradiation. This experiment extends the range of neutron-irradiation-induced resistivity by a factor of five over the previous experiments. A simple model is developed which reproduces the magnetoresistance results of all the experiments to an accuracy of 2.5%. 13 refs., 6 figs.

Book excerpt: The present status of the RTNS-II facility is described and typical operating parameters are given. A brief discussion is given of the methods used in production of the TiT2 targets as well as their performance and tritium handling at RTNS-II. The various types of non-interactive beam diagnostics presently in use at the neutron sources are outlined. The on-line computer system which provides a time history of an irradiation and records target performance is described. Examples are listed of several representative experimental programs which have been carried out thus far at RTNS-II. These include both active and passive experiments. Finally, several of the major improvements to the facility made since the beginning of the experimental program are given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordered and partially ordered Cu3Au alloys (S = .30 - 99) have been irradiated at 4K and 300K with fusion neutrons at RTNS-II. The disordering rate was measured by monitoring electrical resistivity. The analysis of 4K irradiations and a comparison with fission reactor irradiations indicated that the disordering rate depended upon the long-range order parameter, S, dS/d phi t = -S(k1-k2S), where k1 and k2 are scaled with damage energy. The results of 300K irradiation indicated that reordering competed significantly with disordering in the partially ordered sample. Compared to the results of 4K irradiation, the net disordering rate at 300K was higher than that at 4K. This difference and the dependence of disordering rate on S is discussed in terms of the effects of disorder and thermal displacements on cascade cooling processes.
