Member of the forty-third general assembly, came the following: I have appreciated the honor he conferred on me by being friendly to me always, for back in the past when he was a younger man I became acquainted with him. He was, always kind to me and while he was aware of my many failings and shortcomings he always passed them bv and encouraged me to do better. He has left to you bovs a name that few can have. It was not local by any means, but was linked with all of eastern Illinois and especially of our county. There is no one man in our county who was so well and favorably known as was Mr. Goodell. His name meant all that was honorable and good. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Old Frontier, or the Last Raid of the Iroquois IT is not easy for an American of the present day to form a correct idea of the real life of the men and women, boys and girls, of the time chosen for this story. Too plain a presentation of The Old Frontier would probably be found altogether too terrible for use in fiction. Only enough has therefore been pictured to indicate the nature of the materials which ought not to be presented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iroquois: Or, the Bright Side of Indian Character This will probably be the exclamation of many who glance at my title-page, for to those who know nothing con cerning them, a whole book about Indians will seem a very prosy affair. To these I can answer nothing, for they will not proceed as far as my preface to see what reason I can Tender for this seeming folly. But to those who are willing to listen, I will say, that the Indians are a very interesting people, whether I have made an interesting book about them or not. Book Synopsis The Dutch and the Iroquois (Classic Reprint) by : Charles H. Hall
Download or read book The Dutch and the Iroquois (Classic Reprint) written by Charles H. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dutch and the Iroquois In process of time it became known to the French that the Iroquois held the key of the position, and their friendship, conversion, conquest, or destruction became of the last importance to the success of this plan. All efforts in either direction failed, contrary to the usual experience of the French with other tribes, and failed because of the influences traceable to the original impressions made by the policy of the Dutch settlers, and bequeathed by them to the Eng lish in succession. So far as human eyes can see, it was largely due to this fact that the vast regions lying west of the mountain ranges, before-mentioned, were not finally possessed and fully Latinized by the French nation. Singularly enough, after the fall of Quebec and the disastrous ending of this scheme, the Iroquois willingly sought the friendship and in numbers accepted the religion of the Catholic Church. Download or read book History of Iroquois County written by Hiram Williams Beckwith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Iroquois County: Together With Historic Notes on the Northwest, Gleaned From Early Authors, Old Maps and Manuscripts, Private and Official Correspondence, and Other Authentic, Though, for the Most Part, Out-of-the-Way Sources The county presents an admirable system of natural drainage by means Of its larger watercourses and their numerous tributaries. The principal streams are the Iroquois river, Sugar, Mud, Fountain Spring, Prairie, Langham, Pike and Beaver creeks. The chief feeders to these, which have recognized names, are Rush, Coon and Pigeon branches; Miller's, or the west branch Of Spring creek; Shave Tail, or Jefferson; and the Ashkum and Gilman ditches. These streams are generally sluggish and turbid. The Iroquois river, from Sugar Island (just over the county line) to its mouth, is shallow and rocky. Along this whole distance Silurian limestone abounds; but above the island the tide is deep and slack, and navigable for flat boats nearly to the state line. Fish are tolerably abundant in the river and larger creeks, but less so than a few years ago. Artificial Obstructions interfere with their running. The most common kinds found are pike, catfish, bass, suckers, dogfish, red-horse, some buffalo and a few eel. The River, Sugar, Mud, Spring, Langham and Beaver creeks are skirted by considerable timber belts. Some of the others have woodlands near their mouths, and a few spontaneous groves in the vicinity Of watercourses are seen. Planted ones are becoming numerous and meet the eye in every direction. The choicest part of the natural timber has been cut and sent to market. In some places the land has been entirely cleared to improve it for pasture, as well as to feed the saw-mills. The most common varieties of timber are red, white and burr oak, black walnut, butternut, iron wood, wild cherry, swamp beech, ash, sugar maple, soft maple, hickory, elm and honey locust. Crab apple and plum bushes abound in certain localities. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
