Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Rural Life and Industry: With Suggestions for the Future The Papers do not profess to do more than call attention to some of the questions touching the life of Rural Ireland and to some of the in uences affecting its welfare. They seek to carry out the idea of the Committee in charge of the Home Industries Section, which was, not to gather together an exhaustive representation of Irish Home Industries (which indeed would have been impossible in the space we had at our disposal), but to select specimens which would draw attention to the various types of industries now carried on in country districts, and to others which might be established or developed. We might easily have crowded our cases with many more exhibits, we might have greatly increased the number of our exhibitors, we might have included only the very best and most perfect Specimens extant of each industry. Book Synopsis John Bull's Other Homes by : Murray Fraser
Download or read book John Bull's Other Homes written by Murray Fraser and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State housing became an integral part of the relationship between Ireland and Great Britain from the 1880s until the early 1990s. Using research from both Irish and Westminster sources, this book shows that there was recurrent pressure for the state to intervene in housing in Ireland in a period when the "Irish Question" was the major domestic political issue. The result was that the model of subsidized state housing subsequently introduced in Britain was first developed in Ireland, as a product of the tensions of British rule. An important corollary of innovative Irish housing policy was its influence, even in a negative sense, on developments in mainland Britain. This book also examines the cultural impact of imperialism, and in particular the way in which British ideas of garden suburb housing and town planning design came significantly to reshape the Irish urban environment. Fraser not only presents hitherto unknown material, but does so in a unique interdisciplinary blend of architectural, planning, urban and socio-economic history.
Book Synopsis Irelands of the Mind by : Richard C. Allen
Download or read book Irelands of the Mind written by Richard C. Allen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irelands of the Mind: Memory and Identity in Modern Irish Culture offers a compelling series of essays on changing images of Ireland from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. It seeks to understand the various ways in which Ireland has been thought about, not only in fiction, poetry and drama, but in travel writing and tourist brochures, nineteenth-century newspapers, radio talk shows, film adaptations of fictional works, and the music and songs of Van Morrison and Sinéad O’Connor. The prevailing theme throughout the twelve essays that constitute the book is the complicated sense of belonging that continues to characterise so much of modern Irish culture. Questions of nationhood and national identity are given a new and invigorated treatment in the context of a rapidly changing Ireland and a changing set of intellectual methods and approaches.

Book Synopsis Civilising rural Ireland by : Patrick Doyle
Download or read book Civilising rural Ireland written by Patrick Doyle and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The introduction of co-operative societies into the Irish countryside during the late-nineteenth century transformed rural society and created an enduring economic legacy. Civilising rural Ireland challenges predominant narratives of Irish history that explain the emergence of the nation-state through the lens of political conflict and violence. Instead the book takes as its focus the numerous leaders, organisers, and members of the Irish co-operative movement. Together these people captured the spirit of change as they created a modern Ireland through their reorganisation of the countryside, the spread of new economic ideas, and the promotion of mutually-owned businesses. Besides giving a comprehensive account of the co-operative movement’s introduction to Irish society the book offers an analysis of the importance of these radical economic ideas upon political Irish nationalism.
