Had the latter been his object, he might have attained it ong since, in as far as it is attainable by him with not half the labor or consumption of time. A new, a literal translation of Keating, with but few notes, might have ere now commanded as ready a sale as any the present work will ever have. It could have also been got out with half the expense, and less than half the mental toil. N either has his object been literary fame, for if it had, he would have delayed the publication for, perhaps, another year, in order both to render his work more perfect, and to finish off much of the ex lanator matter which is here resented to his readers in a rat er cm 0 and unpolished, thoug he trusts, sufficiently plain and intel ligible sha e. But his engagements with his publisher, and the patrons o the work, would not allow him any further respite, and he has thence been forced to place his book in the hands of the printer, in a condition that does not quite satisfy himself in a mere literary point of view. This, however, costs him but little regret, for of all the descriptions of honest fame, that of a literary man is, perhaps, the one he least covets, not through any want of due appreciation of the hiih mission of men of literary genius and talent, who can teac great truths to their a fellow in* ap ropriatc language, but because his own ambition does not ten that way, and, perba s, because it is the species of fame that is most beyond his reao For this reason, were it possible that another name besides his would have satisfied the immediate patrons of this fiok, as well as his own, he would willing] have relinquished all of praise or of censure that may be attac ed to its authorship, to that other man, while he would have nevertheless labored with equal zeal and assiduity in the work of its production.
