Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iris of Quality: Surplus Stock From Private Collection; Garden and Price List, 1926 We are propagating the surplus stock from the large private collection of H. S. Jackson. This collection has been developed by its owner primarily. For study and breeding purposes. Most of the European stock has been imported direct from the introducers. We are list ing herewith the entire collection, about 500 varieties, with prices affixed to those which we can supply in 1926. In many cases we can spare from one to two divisions of those not priced. Should you find that the varieties which you wish are among those, let us know. A descriptive catalog and handbook giving personal comments on about 250 of the varieties listed here is in preparation andwill be ready in June just after the blooming season. We are delaying the publication of this in order to give our friends the benefit of our 1926 observations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iris of Quality: Surplus Stock From Private Collection, 1927 The renter, therefore, may enjoy the beauties of the Iris and take them with him when he moves. Iris are adapted to a wide variety of uses in the garden. _they may be used in groups in the perennial border, as isolated clumps in front of shrubbery, or massed in effective color groups in a great variety of posi tions. They may be used as borders for walks or driveways, or planted formally in beds. A little study will enable one to combine the colors in very effective groupings. One might think that in mixed plantings you would have color clashes, but this is not so. They are very effective in mixed plantings. In some cases, however, the true quality of some variety is nullified by planting too close to another of different type. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1926 Quality Gardens: Specialties: Iris, Delphinium, Pyrethrum We are offering Lord of June this season for the extremely low price of 50 cents. We are glad that our stock is large enough to permit us to do this, because it brings this beautiful Iris within the pu'rchas ing ability of practically everyone who loves beautiful Iris. This Iris sold six years ago for Someone who buys it this year for 50 cents may say to themselves, See what I have saved; if I had bought it six years ago for I would have wasted $4 50; by waiting six years I have bought it for one-tenth of the price and saved We think they are wrong in their reasoning. If they had bought it six years ago for they would have had all the pleasure of seeing it bloom in all its delicate beauty for six different springs; if they had bought it six years ago, they would have a magnificent clump of it now, of not less than 50 rhizomes, covered with flowers which would dominate the garden. But when they buy it this year, for 50 cents, they will get one solitary rhizome which will throw one or two bloom spikes next year. We con tend that the person who buys it this year has lost money. A lot of Iris we catalogued last year, we are selling for a great reduction from the price we asked last year. And, yet, because of the increase we are still getting a reasonable profit; as large a precentage of profit as we got last year. There is no reason in the world, except under very peculiar conditions, why the price of Iris should not come down each year. There is only one or two exceptions that we know of, to the rule that the price of Iris should come down each year. In 1923 we bought a stock of Robert W. Wallace from Perry. We had a big sale for it so that in the summer of 1925 we had sold most of our stock. We sent over an order to Perry for a lot more of it, and very much to our surprise we were compelled to pay three times as much for it as we had in.1923. The explanation for this is that it was a very wonderful Iris, and Mr. Perry did not fully appreciate its beauty at the time he introduced it. He fixed too low a price on it and there was a tremendous demand for it' and it forced the price up and up. This is the only Iris we know, except Cardinal, that has increased in price in the last two years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Illustrated in color throughout, this handsome volume presents selected papers from an international symposium held in June 2001 marking the completion of a ten-year project to conserve the Last Judgment mosaic, at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The project was a partnership between the Office of the President of the Czech Republic, the Prague Castle Administration, and the Getty Conservation Institute. The goal of the symposium was to present the methodology, research, and results of the project, which involved conserving one of the finest examples of monumental medieval mosaic art in Europe. The volume's essays are divided into three parts, which cover the historical and art-historical context, conservation planning and methodology, and project implementation and maintenance. Topics addressed include the history, iconography, and visual documentation of the mosaic; the development and application of surface cleaning and protective coating techniques for the mosaic's glass tesserae; and post-treatment monitoring and maintenance.

Book excerpt: "This splendid work of scholarship . . . sums up with economy and power all that the written record so far deciphered has to tell about the ancient and complementary civilizations of Babylon and Assyria."—Edward B. Garside, New York Times Book Review Ancient Mesopotamia—the area now called Iraq—has received less attention than ancient Egypt and other long-extinct and more spectacular civilizations. But numerous small clay tablets buried in the desert soil for thousands of years make it possible for us to know more about the people of ancient Mesopotamia than any other land in the early Near East. Professor Oppenheim, who studied these tablets for more than thirty years, used his intimate knowledge of long-dead languages to put together a distinctively personal picture of the Mesopotamians of some three thousand years ago. Following Oppenheim's death, Erica Reiner used the author's outline to complete the revisions he had begun. "To any serious student of Mesopotamian civilization, this is one of the most valuable books ever written."—Leonard Cottrell, Book Week "Leo Oppenheim has made a bold, brave, pioneering attempt to present a synthesis of the vast mass of philological and archaeological data that have accumulated over the past hundred years in the field of Assyriological research."—Samuel Noah Kramer, Archaeology A. Leo Oppenheim, one of the most distinguished Assyriologists of our time, was editor in charge of the Assyrian Dictionary of the Oriental Institute and John A. Wilson Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Chicago.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The Uninhabitable Earth hits you like a comet, with an overflow of insanely lyrical prose about our pending Armageddon.”—Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker • The New York Times Book Review • Time • NPR • The Economist • The Paris Review • Toronto Star • GQ • The Times Literary Supplement • The New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews It is worse, much worse, than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible—food shortages, refugee emergencies, climate wars and economic devastation. An “epoch-defining book” (The Guardian) and “this generation’s Silent Spring” (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it—the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action. For just as the world was brought to the brink of catastrophe within the span of a lifetime, the responsibility to avoid it now belongs to a single generation—today’s. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD “The Uninhabitable Earth is the most terrifying book I have ever read. Its subject is climate change, and its method is scientific, but its mode is Old Testament. The book is a meticulously documented, white-knuckled tour through the cascading catastrophes that will soon engulf our warming planet.”—Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times “Riveting. . . . Some readers will find Mr. Wallace-Wells’s outline of possible futures alarmist. He is indeed alarmed. You should be, too.”—The Economist “Potent and evocative. . . . Wallace-Wells has resolved to offer something other than the standard narrative of climate change. . . . He avoids the ‘eerily banal language of climatology’ in favor of lush, rolling prose.”—Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times “The book has potential to be this generation’s Silent Spring.”—The Washington Post “The Uninhabitable Earth, which has become a best seller, taps into the underlying emotion of the day: fear. . . . I encourage people to read this book.”—Alan Weisman, The New York Review of Books

Book excerpt: The Eames House Conservation Management Plan (CMP) provides a framework for the care, management, and conservation of the Eames House, also known as Case Study House No. 8, an internationally renowned work of modern architecture designed by Charles and Ray Eames. The CMP was developed using an internationally recognized, values-based methodology. It analyzes the historical, documentary, and physical site evidence to develop a thorough understanding of the place, followed by an assessment of its heritage significance. These assessments provided the foundation for development of a series of policies, some general and some specific to particular elements of the site, intended to guide the conservation, interpretation, and management of the Eames House in a manner that preserves its cultural significance for future generations.
