Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Normans, Vol. 1 Much of the story of Ireland has never been adequately told. Her early traditions, indeed, regarded by the annalists and by Geoffrey Keating and others as sober history, have in recent times been more scientifically treated from varying points of view, as legend with a dim substratum of fact, as mythology with a still dimmer basis, as folklore growing out of deep-rooted primitive custom. The footprints of St. Patrick and of the early saints have been followed over the length and breadth of the island. The traces of her missionaries have been sought for and found throughout western Europe. Her wonderful handiwork, executed under the patronage of her Church, on vellum, in metal, on stone, has been praised with justifiable pride, and has taken its place - no mean one - in the history of the evolution of art. Her primitive literature is gradually being given to the world by competent scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Normans, Vol. 3: 1216-1333 Encouraged by the reception given to the first two volumes of this work, I lost no time before commencing to fulfil the promise held out at the close of Volume II, and endeavouring to complete my study of what may be regarded as the Anglo Norman period of Irish history. Some explana tion then seems to be required to account for the lapse of time before my self-imposed task was done. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Normans, Vol. 2: 1169-1216 One adventurous spirit showed his discontent With Fitz Audelin's policy by organizing and carrying out a raid on his own account, which would seem to have been the act Of a madman had it not been successful, and which resulted in subjecting a large portion Of another pro vince to English domination. This was John de Courcy, whose story IS like a wild romance, and would hardly be believed were it not for many solid and enduring facts which testify to its essential truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Tudors, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Succinct Account of the Earlier History Starting with this conception of the task before me, I have not attempted to please any party or school. The history of Ireland is at the best a sad one; but its study, if it be really studied for the truth's sake, can hardly fail to make men more tolerant. In Ireland, as in other countries, a purely Celtic population was unable to resist the impact of the Teutonic race. First came the pagan Northmen, with power to ruin, but without power to reconstruct. Then followed the anglo-normans, seeking for lands and lordships, but seeking them under the patronage of the Catholic Church. For a time it seemed as though the conquest would be complete; but the colony proved too weak for its work, and the mail-clad knights failed almost as completely as the Scandinavian corsairs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Conquest of England by the Normans, Vol. 1 of 2: Its Causes, and Its Consequences, in England, Scotland, Ireland, and on the Continent The principal states of modern Europe have at present attained a high degree of territorial unity, and the habit of living under one same government and in the bosom of one same civilization, seems to have introduced among the pcpu lation of each state an entire community of manners, language, and patriotism. Yet there is perhaps not one of them which does not still present to the inquirer living traces of the diversity of the races of men which, in the progress of time, have combined to form that population. This variety of races is displayed under different aspects. Here a complete separation of idioms, local traditions, political sentiments, and a sort of instinctive hostility, distinguish from the great national mass the population of particular districts, of limited extent; there a simple difference of idiom, or even of accent, marks, though more faintly, the limit of the settlements formed by peoples of diverse origin, and long separated by deep-seated animosities. The further we go back from the time in which we live, the more distinct do these varieties become; we clearly perceive the existence of several peoples in the geographical circumscription which bears the name of one alone: instead of varying provincial dialects, we find complete and regular languages; and that which in the light of the present seems merely defective civilization and pro tracted resistance to progress, assumes, in the past, the aspect of original manners and patriotic adherence to ancient insti. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The O'donoghue, Vol. 1 of 2: A Tale of Ireland Fifty Years Ago; To Which Is Added a Rent in a Cloud It was no new thing to me to know the Irish peasant in his character of a hoarder and a saver. There is no one trait so indicative of the Celt as acquisitiveness, nor does Eastern story contain a man more given to the castle-building that grows out of some secret hoard however small - than Paddy. He is to add half an acre to his potato garden, or to buy another pig, or to send the gossoon to a school in the town, or to pay his passage to New York. This tendency to construct a future, so strong in the Irish nature, has its rise in a great reliance on what he feels to be the goodness of God a firm conviction that all his struggles are watched and cared for, and that every little turn of good fortune has been given him by some especial favor, lies deep in his nature, and suggests an amount of hope to him which a less sanguine spirit could never have conceived.
