Book excerpt: If you walk through Ipswich you become aware of how buildings of all periods jostle each other for space. There are remnants of fine medieval and Tudor dwellings, terraced streets from the 19th century as well as developments from the 20th and 21st centuries. David Kindred's book throws light on how Ipswich has developed since the 1880s when photography outdoors first became practical. He has drawn on a wide range of sources including some photographers whose work was outstanding. Harry Walters, for example, was making high-quality images in the 1890s. Similarly, the curator of the Ipswich museum in the 1930s, Guy Maynard, recorded areas where changes to the town were planned including photographs of the housing around Cox Lane and the Potteries. Amateur photographers have also played their part, capturing the questionable changes of the 1960s. They have photographed the recent transformation of the dock area from a commercial hub to a mainly residential and leisure scene complete with a new university building. The 300-plus photographs chosen and captioned by David Kindred bring to life the past and present of Suffolk's county town, the town on the Orwell.

Book excerpt: David Kindred's book is a remarkable record of some 400 public houses, inns and beerhouses. The entries are organised into two sections: the first describes the public houses that have been closed since 1919 and includes photographs, while the second lists closures from the eighteenth century to the First World War punctuated with photographs where available. By consulting archives, borough records, period newspapers and the painstaking research of the late Jack Ruffles, David Kindred has successfully painted a picture of the evolution of the Ipswich public house. With interesting anecdotes from town residents and a section on the old coaching inns, the book is sure to make the reader see their cherished locals in a new light.,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pub is a prominent social institution integral to British identity. From Taverns of Gastropubs: Food, Drink, and Sociality in England charts the historical development of the English public house from the Restoration period to the twenty-first century, culminating in the contemporary gastropub. It explores issues of class, gender, and national identification to understand the social identity of patrons and how publicans conceive of their establishments' organizational identity. In the context of large-scale pub closures since the 1990s the gastropub is viewed as both a reaction to the traditional drinking pub and as a promising alternative. From Taverns to Gastropubs uses historical diaries, industry reports, and a wealth of in-depth interviews in order to understand the rise of the gastropub and how food, drink, and sociality has changed through time.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE DRINK BOOK AWARD AT THE FORTNUM & MASON FOOD AND DRINK AWARDS 2017. Pete Brown has visited hundreds of pubs across the UK and is uniquely placed to write about pubs that ooze atmosphere, whatever the reason, be it food, people, architecture, location or decor. The best pubs are those that always have a steady trade at any time on any day of the week, and where chat flows back and forth across the bar. They're the places where you want to drink weak beer so you can have several pints and stay longer. Some are grand Victorian palaces, others ancient inns with stunning views across the hills. Some are ale shrines, others gastropubs (though they probably don’t call themselves that any more). A precious few are uniquely eccentric, the kinds of places that are just as likely to have terrible reviews on Trip Advisor as great ones, because some people don't realize that the outside toilets, limp sandwiches on the bar and really disturbing full-size mannequin glaring at you from the corner are all part of the charm. This charming collection of 300 pubs explores what makes each one ooze atmosphere, be it food, people, architecture, location or décor, and looks at the quirks of local history as well as different trends and types of pub. Full of pen portraits of punters or publicans, legends, yarns and myths, this entertaining book is the perfect gift for regulars of that well-loved British institution, the pub.

Book excerpt: For hundreds of years, the public house in its many guises, from urban gin palace to wayside coaching inn, has been a charming and quintessential feature of British life, and hence the names and signs associated with pubs are a constant reminder of our history, cultural heritage, folklore and local identity. The Wordsworth Dictionary of Pub Names is a fascinating compilation containing nearly five thousand absorbing entries and can be dipped into for fun or consulted on a serious level for intriguing and amusing information not readily available elsewhere. The local pub is an institution unique to the British Isles, but since English literature abounds with references to hostelries past and present, real and imagined, and no tourist's itinerary is complete without a visit to one or several on their route, its virtues are celebrated worldwide and readers everywhere will enjoy an affectionate and, perhaps, nostalgic browse through the pages of this entertaining dictionary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This curious literary artifact is a travelogue of sorts, a guidebook to the real inns and taverns mentioned in Charles Dickens' first novel, The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, or, more familiarly, The Pickwick Papers. The 1836-7 comic serial was a phenomenon in its day, and was, in the mind of Dickens scholar BERTRAM WALDROM MATZ (1865-1925), "England's classic book of humor." Here, with a singular dedication and a hearty charm, Matz-one of the founders of the Dickens Fellowship and the first editor of its journal, The Dickensian, which first appeared in 1905 and is still published today-takes us on a tour of such locations as the Blue Lion in Muggleton, the Marquis of Granby in Dorking, the Magpie and Stump in Whitechapel, the Saracen's Head in Towcester, and other places that will be familiar to Pickwick fans. This replica of the 1922 second edition is a delightful document of literary fandom.
