Book excerpt: Generation after generation, families of vacationers have returned to northwestern Iowa's Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes for summertime rest and recreation. From the earliest pioneer days to the Spirit Lake Massacre to the first rustic outdoorsmen's accommodations, this deep glacial lake and its sister prairie lakes have been embraced by visitors for more than 150 years. Slow growing until rail service in 1882, the area saw investment in the form of the Orleans, the grandest hotel west of the Mississippi, which was demolished a scant 15 years later. By then, though, word had gotten out, and Lake Okoboji's wooded bluffs and sandy beaches became places of quiet repose for vacationers. Resorts of all sizes drew the wealthy and modest alike. Among the area's attractions were Arnolds Park Amusement Park; the Roof Garden; the Casino, Central, and Inn ballrooms; thrilling boat rides; skating; and summertime "bathing" in the revitalizing waters. Now largely given over to private residences of all sizes, the many marinas and public areas still draw summertime visitors intent on forging their own indelible memories.

Book excerpt: Photographers Linda and Robert Scarth have an incredible eye for that magic moment when small becomes beautiful. Matched with patience and skill, their eye for magic produces dazzling images of Iowa nature up close. Revealing the miniature beauties hidden among the patches of prairie, woodland, and wetland that remain in Iowa’s sadly overdeveloped landscape, the seventy-five color photographs in Deep Nature give us a breathtaking cross section of the state’s smallest inhabitants. The Scarths’ close-up images of showy orchis and northern monkshood, great spangled fritillary and painted lady, red-breasted nuthatch and eastern wood-pewee, ornate box turtle and gray treefrog, big bluestem and cotton-grass, and many other natural wonders look more like paintings than photographs. Beginning with an iridescent fly hovering over a neon-purple fringed gentian and ending with their iconic image of coneflowers refracted in dewdrops, they have created a sparkling jewelbox of images that will make us look at the small world around us with renewed appreciation. Attending to the small things in the fabric of nature is the Scarths’ source of artistic inspiration. Taking Walt Whitman’s “every leaf is a miracle” as their beginning, they celebrate not only each leaf but each feather, insect, dewdrop, flower, lichen, and intricate organism in the evolving web of life.

Book excerpt: "Rexroth's most notable work, Iowa, is a series of dream-like and poetic images. Each seemingly candid and liquid composition includes a soft focus and vignette, characteristic qualities of Diana camera images. [...] The Iowa series subconsciously expresses Rexroth's childhood memories of visiting family in Iowa. Growing up in the suburbs of Arlington, Virginia, she was captivated by the exotic summer landscapes of Iowa. Although the influence of her memories is present, Rexroth refers to Iowa as a hallucinatory state of mind rather than a concrete geographic location of personal sentiment. She describes Iowa as 'conceived of as a kind of psychic journey from one emotional mood to the next-- a maturation process. It all happens in a place which is very exotic.' In the introduction to the book, Mark L. Power describes this work as 'Sunny Iowa was transformed by memory into a dark Iowa with "a real feeling of melancholy." [...]"

Book excerpt: In 1987 photographer Sandra Dyas moved to Iowa City and began documenting the area's vibrant live music scene, with its distinctive combination of folk, blues, roots/Americana, and rock sounds. The sixty photos in Down to the River capture her twenty years of photographing live music venues and shooting portraits of musicians in and around the city, resulting in a collection of images as compassionate and honest as the music itself. Dyas's photographs present both the sweaty intensity of live performances and the more contemplative moments of individual portraits. They are complemented by Chris Offutt's empathetic essay, which also encapsulates the experience of connecting with a new home through its music. A companion CD with eighteen tracks by Iowa's finest singer/songwriters, including Dave Moore, Greg Brown, Bo Ramsey, David Zollo, and Pieta Brown, add up to an unmatched perspective on Iowa music and musicians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first rustic vacation retreat for hunters and fishermen was built in 1871, Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes have been a drawing card for families, generation after generation. Over the decades, dozens of vacation resorts, from the magnificent Hotel Orleans on Big Spirit Lake to the iconic Inn on West Okoboji, have lured happy summertime visitors. Just mentioning the name of a resort often evokes memories of swimming, boating, fishing, waterskiing, or just good times spent with friends and family. However, most of these vacation resorts are now gone--The Inn, Manhattan Beach Hotel, Templar Park, and Crandall's Lodge have all been demolished. Vacation Village has become Village West, and the Crescent Beach resort, which at one time boasted over 100 apartments or cottages, now has fewer than 30 motel-style units. Gone too are dozens of friendly mom-and-pop cottage resorts all around the lakes, replaced by condominiums and private residences.

Book excerpt: Iowa residents Craig Farlinger and Mike Whye need no words to explain how incredible their home state is—the proof is in the 109 color photographs that make up their new book, Iowa: A Photographic Journey, available from Farcountry Press this fall.

Working independently from Cresco and Council Bluffs, respectively, Farlinger and Whye have covered nearly every corner of Iowa in their 54 combined years of professional photography. In Iowa: A Photographic Journey, the duo delivers not only the cozy farm scenes and small-town charm that make the state great, but also a wide variety of true-blue Iowa subjects visitors and even locals may not have previously seen.

Although both photographers are well rounded, Iowa: A Photographic Journey brings out their individual strengths. Farlinger takes readers on a journey through majestic natural places, including Iowa’s beloved state parks, old-growth forests, limestone bluffs, winding rivers, and the unique prairies of the Loess Hills. Whye highlights the state’s culture, from the famous covered bridges of Madison County to the golden Iowa Capitol, from the freewheeling sculptures of Pappajohn Sculpture Park to the two-wheeled extravaganza RAGBRAI, and all the rodeos, museums, historical sites, and giant concrete bulls in between.

The book’s images reveal a rare passion for all things Iowa. If, as the old saying goes, a picture is worth 1,000 words, Farlinger and Whye have composed a splendid love letter to the Hawkeye State.

Book excerpt: Was This Heaven? provides detailed depictions of homes and clothing and hairstyles, of celebrations and ceremonies, of church, school, and social activities, of farm animals and city streets, of the multitudinous ways of living full and satisfying lives. Lyell Henry wisely gives priority to people over place, shortchanging public buildings in favor of cards that cast a more direct light on early Iowans' lives and minds. Last spring's flood, the Christmas tree in the parlor, high school graduation, the annual family picnic, the whistle-stop visit of President Taft, and true-life encounters with gigantic hogs and outsize ears of corn all combine to form a pleasantly rich visual record of the mental and physical worlds of the many Iowans featured. These postcards convey images of people who found great joy in their daily lives. With the publication of Was This Heaven? Iowans at the end of the twentieth century can look back across the decades and recapture that same joy in these fresh and effervescent images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Barry Phipps relocated to Iowa City from Chicago in 2012, he knew nothing of Iowa. He began taking day trips across Iowa in the spirit of wonder and discovery. His marked-up road map soon became a work of art in and of itself, covered with spokes, lines, and places both seen and needing to be seen. Along the way he plied his trade, taking photographs. Inspired by such seminal work as Robert Frank’s The Americans, this is a unique vision of the Midwest and Iowa. Without condescending or overemphasizing the decline of small town America, Phipps documents rural communities as they are now, noting abstract shapes and colors as he photographs business districts with quirky and/or artful signs, streetscapes and landscapes, buildings with ghosts of paint from previous lives, and the occasional resident. In addition to their startling attention to color and geometry, Phipps’s photos delight because they suggest an author who isn’t on intimate terms with his subject matter, but very much wants to be. Though the photographs in this collection frequently maintain a cautious distance from the houses, water towers, and iconography he captures on film, the pictures feel, at once, eager and shy. Phipps admires his new home—from afar, by varying degrees—and excitedly introduces himself to it: the first steps of a journey toward claiming Iowa as his.
