In some cases the results have been quite positive, producing temperature increases and also improving both energy and particle confinement times, whereas in others, no distinctive changes were observed. Most recently, IBWH has been utilized in the Princeton Beta Experiment-Modified (PBX-M) where the long-range goal is the achievement of operation in the second stable region by current and pressure profile control. Investigations have been performed in this machine using IBWH as the sole source of auxiliary power or using IBWH in conjunction with neutral-beam injection (NBI) or with lower-hybrid current drive (LHCD). Impurity studies seem particularly important for IBWH since not only have influxes often been observed to increase, but the global impurity confinement time has also been shown to lengthen as the confinement of the working gas improved. The authors present here a set of characteristic experimental results regarding the impurity behavior in PBX-M; in general, these are consonant with previous observations in other tokamaks.

Book excerpt: A population of suprathermal ions has been observed in the scrape-off layer during injection of power in the ion cyclotron frequency range on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. These ions generated energetic neutrals measured with a charge-exchange neutral particle analyzer. In the hydrogen minority heating regime, fast particles were generated only when the injected power was above 500kW. Fast particles were observed at a low level of injected power when the frequency was a multiple of the ion cyclotron frequency in the scrape-off layer. The power deposited in the edge was always less than a few percent of the injected power and did not increase impurity levels. The theoretical threshold of parametric decay instabilities for decay of the pump wave in the antenna near field into an ion Bernstein wave and an ion cyclotron quasimode matches the observed threshold for fast ion production under a variety of conditions.

Using this code, the ion Bernstein wave heating experiment on the JIPPT-II-U tokamak has been analyzed. It is assumed that the resonance layer is formed by the third harmonic of deuterium-like ions, such as fully ionized carbon, and oxygen ions near the plasma center. For wave absorption mechanisms, electron Landau damping, ion cyclotron harmonic damping, and collisional damping are considered. The characteristics of the ion Bernstein wave heating experiment, such as the ion temperature increase, the strong dependence of the quality factor on the magnetic field strength, and the dependence of the ion temperature increment on the input power, are well reproduced.

The PCI system in C-Mod measures line-integrated density fluctuations using a CO2 laser which passes vertically through the plasma. The density fluctuation pattern is an inherently 3-dimensional structure, so the full-wave code TORIC has been used to interpret the one-dimensional measurements, which have some unexpected features, such as multiple peaks and troughs in amplitude. Strong IBW signal was often observed to the low-field side of the mode conversion layer. The importance of the parallel electric field for these IBW density fluctuation measurements is identified. IBW wavenumbers from 5 to 12 cm-1 have been detected, which is within the range of the code results.
