This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symposium II, "Ion Beams─New Applications from Mesoscale to Nanoscale," was held at the 2011 MRS Spring Meeting, April 25-29, in San Francisco, California. This symposium welcomed presentations on ion-beam engineering and characterization of materials properties, structure, topography, and functionality, spanning dimensions from the mesoscale to the nanoscale. While the unique capabilities of ion-beam techniques in the diverse emerging fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology are fast becoming critical for many new applications, the flexibility of ion-beam techniques now enables the development of new tools that can integrate tailoring of nanoscale patterns and structures with unique in-situ imaging and analysis. The recent evolution of such instrumentation has energized new programs, both basic and applied, in fast-developing areas ranging over advanced semiconductor integration, information storage, sensors, plasmonics, molecular engineering, biomaterials, and many aspects of the development of alternative energy resources. In a field displaying such rapid evolution on many fronts, it is appropriate for us to pause occasionally and review the overall state of the field, and its emerging opportunities and challenges.

Book Synopsis Swift Ion Beam Analysis in Nanosciences by : Denis Jalabert
Download or read book Swift Ion Beam Analysis in Nanosciences written by Denis Jalabert and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swift ion beam analysis (IBA) of materials and their surfaces has been widely applied to many fields over the last half century, constantly evolving to meet new requirements and to take advantage of developments in particle detection and data treatment. Today, emerging fields in nanosciences introduce extreme demands to analysis methods at the nanoscale. This book addresses how analysis with swift ion beams is rising to meet such needs. Aimed at early stage researchers and established researchers wishing to understand how IBA can contribute to their analytical requirements in nanosciences, the basics of the interactions of charged particles with matter, as well as the operation of the relevant equipment, are first presented. Many recent examples from nanoscience research are then explored in which the specific analytical capabilities of IBA are emphasized, together with the place of IBA alongside the wealth of other analytical methods. -- ISTE, Ltd. website.

It - compasses the ?elds of physics, chemistry, material science, electrical en- neering, chemical engineering and other disciplines. Success has been o- standing. World-class accomplishments in materials have been recognized by NobelprizesinPhysicsandChemistryandgivenrisetoentirelynewtechno- gies. Materials science advances have underpinned the technology revolution that has driven societal changes for the last ?fty years. Obviouslytheendisnotinsight!Futuretechnology-basedproblemsd- inatethecurrentscene.Highonthelistarecontrolandconservationofenergy and environment, water purity and availability, and propagating the inf- mation revolution. All fall in the technology domain. In every case proposed solutions begin with new forms of materials, materials processing or new arti?cial material structures. Scientists seek new forms of photovoltaics with greater e?ciency and lower cost. Water purity may be solved through surface control, which promises new desalination processes at lower energy and lower cost. Revolutionary concepts to extend the information revolution reside in controlling the “spin” of electrons or enabling quantum states as in quantum computing. Ion-beam experts make substantial contributions to all of these burgeoning sciences.

Book Synopsis Swift Heavy Ions for Materials Engineering and Nanostructuring by : Devesh Kumar Avasthi
Download or read book Swift Heavy Ions for Materials Engineering and Nanostructuring written by Devesh Kumar Avasthi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion beams have been used for decades for characterizing and analyzing materials. Now energetic ion beams are providing ways to modify the materials in unprecedented ways. This book highlights the emergence of high-energy swift heavy ions as a tool for tailoring the properties of materials with nanoscale structures. Swift heavy ions interact with materials by exciting/ionizing electrons without directly moving the atoms. This opens a new horizon towards the 'so-called' soft engineering. The book discusses the ion beam technology emerging from the non-equilibrium conditions and emphasizes the power of controlled irradiation to tailor the properties of various types of materials for specific needs.

Book Synopsis High Resolution Focused Ion Beams: FIB and its Applications by : Jon Orloff
Download or read book High Resolution Focused Ion Beams: FIB and its Applications written by Jon Orloff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we have attempted to produce a reference on high resolution focused ion beams (FIBs) that will be useful for both the user and the designer of FIB instrumentation. We have included a mix of theory and applications that seemed most useful to us. The field of FIBs has advanced rapidly since the application of the first field emission ion sources in the early 1970s. The development of the liquid metal ion source (LMIS) in the late 1960s and early 1970s and its application for FIBs in the late 1970s have resulted in a powerful tool for research and for industry. There have been hundreds of papers written on many aspects of LMIS and FIBs, and a useful and informative book on these subjects was published in 1991 by Phil Prewett and Grame Mair. Because there have been so many new applications and uses found for FIBs in the last ten years we felt that it was time for another book on the subject.
