Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aufforderung zum Tanze (Invitation to the Dance) was composed in 1819 and dedicated to Weber's wife of only a few months. This is the first waltz to be written as a concert piece and to depict people dancing. The introduction is a man asking a women to dance and their conversation, they dance, and then depart with his thanks. Berlioz was asked to add a ballet to Weber's opera "Der Freischutz," a French tradition when the Paris Opera put on a production in 1841. For this he chose to orchestrate the Invitation to the Dance, which soon became even more popular as an orchestral concert piece than in Weber's original piano setting. This new, beautifully engraved score by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr. shows the full details of Berlioz brilliant orchestrational style."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate guide to classical composers and their music-for both the novice and the experienced listener Music, according to Aaron Copland, can thrive only if there are "gifted listeners." But today's listeners must choose between classical and rock, opera and rap, and the choices can seem overwhelming at times. In The Essential Canon of Classical Music, David Dubal comes to the aid of the struggling listener and provides a cultural-literacy handbook for classical music. Dubal identifies the 240 composers whose works are most important to an understanding of classical music and offers a comprehensive, chronological guide to their lives and works. He has searched beyond the traditional canon to introduce readers to little-known works by some of the most revered names in classical music-Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert-as well as to the major works of lesser-known composers. In a spirited and opinionated voice, Dubal seeks to rid us of the notion of "masterpieces" and instead to foster a new generation of master listeners. The result is an uncommon collection of the wonders classical music has to offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the bibliography of literature about personalities in the conducting world is extensive, a comprehensive, scholarly study of the history of conducting has been sorely lacking. Georg Schünemann's respected study, published in 1913, was brief and restricted to the procedures of time-beating. No work has attempted to examine the role of the orchestral conductor and to document the evolution of his art from historical, technical, and aesthetic perspectives. Dr. Elliott W. Galkin, musicologist, conductor, and critic-twice winner of the Deems Taylor award for distinguished writing about music-has produced such a work in A History of Orchestral Conducting. The central historical section of the book, which examines chronologically the theories and functions of time-beating and interpretative concepts of performance, is preceded by discussions of rhythm, development of the orchestral medium, and the evolving characteristics of orchestration. Conductors of unusual pivotal influence are examined in depth, as is the increasingly complex psychology of the podium. Critical writings since the time of Monteverdi and the birth of the orchestra are surveyed and compared. Analyses of conducting as an art and craft by musicians from Berlioz to Bernstein and commentators from Mattheson, Bernard Shaw, and Thomas Mann to Jacques Barzun, are described and discussed. A fascinating collection of engravings, wood cuts, photographs and caricatures contributes to the richness of this work.

Book excerpt: "Central to the repertoire of Western art music since the 18th century, the symphony has come to be regarded as one of the ultimate compositional challenges. Surprisingly, heretofore there has been no truly extensive, broad-based treatment of the genre, and the best of the existing studies are now several decades old. In this five-volume series, A. Peter Brown explores the symphony from its 18th-century beginnings to the end of the 20th century. Synthesizing the enormous scholarly literature, Brown presents up-to-date overviews of the status of research, discusses any important former or remaining problems of attribution, illuminates the style of specific works and their contexts, and samples early writings on their reception. The Symphonic Repertoire provides an unmatched compendium of knowledge for the student, teacher, performer, and sophisticated amateur. The series is being launched with two volumes on the Viennese symphony."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: This volume traces the evolution of the Honolulu Symphony Society and Orchestra from its origins as a German beer drinking and music club founded in 1912 to the dynamic, multicultural symphony orchestra it is today. In this chronicle, readers will find a veritable who's who of Honolulu philanthropy known for supporting the orchestra both through their passion for European classical music and with their pocket-books. The Honolulu Symphony: A Century of Music shines a spotlight on the men and women who once made waves in the music scene but are now relegated to the footnotes of history: Princess Ululani Robertson, who became internationally famous for her role as Madame Butterfly; the Korean conductor Won Sik Lim, who at the age of twenty-eight, was the first Asian maestro to lead the Orchestra; and the influential Hungarian-born conductor George Barati, who brought the music of Stravinsky, Bartok, and Hindemith to Honolulu for the first time in the 1950s.
