Book excerpt: We are currently in the midst of a revolution in the ways in which ordinary people receive, hold and spend their money. Far more people than ever before now have bank accounts, use credit and debit cards, shop with smart cards instead of cash, and bank by phone or over the Internet. All these developments are changing the ways in which individuals and couples manage their money and increasing the inequalities between those who can and those who cannot gain access to the 'electronic economy'.The study is the first to explore how ordinary men and women are using new forms of money. In this book Jan Pahl:examines the extent to which new forms of money constrain or enhance the access which individuals have to money and credit;considers whether access to money held electronically is related to other characteristics of individuals, such as income, employment status, education, age, gender, spending power and access to goods and services;draws out the implications for those responsible for policy making, in terms of combating financial exclusion, access to credit, the provision of financial information and the changing nature of family life. The results suggest an increasing polarisation between households and individuals. Those who are affluent and technologically confident may enjoy and be excited by new forms of money: in the electronic economy of the future they are also likely to be privileged consumers. At the other extreme are those who are more or less completely excluded from the electronic economy. Within marriage, individuals can use new forms of money to control family finances, to conceal spending from each other or to maintain a higher standard of living than their partners. Men tend to make more use of new forms of money than women do and this may be changing the balance of financial power within families.Based on interviews, focus groups and quantitative data on spending, Invisible money will be of great interest to policy makers in the relevant fields, to people working in financial services and in advice centres, and to anyone who is concerned with marriage and family life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organized crime group that dominates much of the socioeconomic life of contemporary Naples, the Camorra, is organized by kin and geography, and it is notoriously the most violent, fractious, and disorganized mafia in Italy. The Camorra controls local extortion rackets, the drug and counterfeit trades, and other legal and illicit activities as well as wielding substantial political influence throughout Naples and its environs. Felia Allum has been researching the Camorra for twenty years, and in The Invisible Camorra she reveals a surprising alteration in Camorra behavior when operatives live outside the Neapolitan base. When gang members move away from Naples, having been forced out by intense policing and gang competition, they are attracted by business opportunities that, on the whole, fit in with their usual activities. When they move to other parts of Western Europe and are therefore no longer criminals simply by virtue of "mafia association" as they are in Italy, they become largely invisible. Gang members avoid the spectacular deployment of violence, they merge quietly into local life, they keep themselves to themselves, and, when necessary, use legitimate local actors such as lawyers and accountants to further their economic well-being. Allum has constructed a meticulous description and analysis of Camorra activities abroad. To build accounts of the Camorra in Germany and the Netherlands, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom, she has interviewed investigating magistrates, police officers, and confessed criminals; done substantial mining of Italian and European police data; and made extensive use of judicial investigations, court records and transcripts as well as of journalistic accounts. The result is the first systematic analysis of the overseas activities of this major criminal organization.

Book excerpt: The three professions that are the basic foundations of the country--education, health care and law--have become market driven and bloated with excessive spending. Tens of billions of dollars could be saved annually and applied to other important government programs if education, health care and law were restructured to meet society's needs in the 21st century rather than the needs of profiteers. Higher education is the next housing crisis. Tens of thousands of students are unnecessarily borrowing money to attend on campus classes that will place them in lifelong debt. A world class education in fact can be had on the cheap. In the old days many people lived long lives, often 80 plus years, under the most primitive and unhealthy conditions. We should be able to do the same thing today an thus reduce the cost of health care that amounts to $2.7 trillion a year business. Very few people can afford an attorney. The chapter "A Rule That Is Ruining the Legal Profession" discusses how the unnecessary high cost of legal education is denying millions of Americans the justice they deserve.

Book excerpt: The economic crisis has squeezed the cultural sector across the world. But cut-backs, closed theatres and moth-balled arts centres are only half of the story. When critics and historians look back to our times, they’ll be less preoccupied with the art that wasn’t made and more with the art that was. Art that could explain how we arrived here, art that could do something about it and art that showed the possibility of different ways of living. Not for the art that was shaped by the economy, but art that forged alliances with the people and forces that could reshape it. That’s what this paper is about. Inside IETM and beyond we found artists keen to explore what people value and whether the economy actually reflects it. We found fringe-institutions, networks and conferences attempting to open up a space to question and attack judgements made by politicians in the name of economy. We found artists active in their communities experimenting and rehearsing with their own ‘micro economies’ as co-operatives, time-banks and demonstrations of different forms of community. Where politics has been asphyxiated by a cadre of economists, art is administering a kiss of life. But neither artists nor the cultural sector are separate from the economy. The answer to inequality, democratic disengagement and climate change is not simply more art. But rather a different place for art. Artists who question values of the economy, inevitably end up questioning the values of the cultural sector. In the face of more politically-engaged, socially curious art, new networks, institutions and approaches are needed to support it. Art not just as an input or output of an economy, but art that challenges the assumptions on which the economy is based.
