Book Synopsis Developing China: The Remarkable Impact of Foreign Direct Investment by : Michael J. Enright
Download or read book Developing China: The Remarkable Impact of Foreign Direct Investment written by Michael J. Enright and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important features of China’s economic emergence has been the role of foreign investment and foreign companies. The importance goes well beyond the USD 1.6 trillion in foreign direct investment that China has received since it started opening its economy. Using the tools of economic impact analysis, the author estimates that around one-third of China’s GDP in recent years has been generated by the investments, operations, and supply chains of foreign invested companies. In addition, foreign companies have developed industries, created suppliers and distributors, introduced modern technologies, improved business practices, modernized management training, improved sustainability performance, and helped shape China’s legal and regulatory systems. These impacts have helped China become the world’s second largest economy, its leading exporter, and one of its leading destinations for inward investment. The book provides a powerful analysis of China’s policies toward foreign investment that can inform policy makers around the world, while giving foreign companies tools to demonstrate their contributions to host countries and showing the tremendous power of foreign investment to help transform economies.

Book Synopsis China’s Foreign Investment Legal Regime by : Yuwen Li
Download or read book China’s Foreign Investment Legal Regime written by Yuwen Li and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has developed a piecemeal pattern of regulating foreign investment since the end of 1970s. The latest law is the Foreign Investment Law (FIL), which became effective on 1 January 2020. The groundbreaking new FIL is well acknowledged for its promises and affirmations pledged to investors, signalling China’s eagerness to improve its investment environment and regain momentum for investment growth. This book provides an updated and holistic understanding of the key features of the regulatory regime on foreign investment in China with critical analysis of laws and their implementation. It also examines sensitive and complex legal issues relevant to foreign investment beyond the 2020 FIL and new developments on foreign-related dispute settlement. The book uses cases of success and failure to illustrate the nuances and differences between law and practice regarding foreign investment. Considering China’s magnitude in the global economy and the weighty role of the regulatory system on foreign investment in China, this book is of great interest to a wide range of audience including academics in the field of investment law, legal practitioners, policymakers, and master's students in law and in management.

Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment in China by : Ms.Wanda Tseng
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in China written by Ms.Wanda Tseng and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's increasing openness to foreign direct investment (FDI) has contributed importantly to its exceptional growth performance. This paper examines China's experience with FDI and identifies some lessons for other countries. Most of the factors explaining China's success have also been important in attracting FDI to other countries: market size, labor costs, quality of infrastructure, and government policies. FDI has contributed to higher investment and productivity growth, and has created jobs and a dynamic export sector. China's success, however, did not come without some pitfalls: an increasingly complex tax incentive system and growing regional income disparities. Accession to the WTO should broaden China's "opening up" policies and continue FDI's contributions to China's economy in the future.

Book Synopsis Modernizing China by : W. Raphael Lam
Download or read book Modernizing China written by W. Raphael Lam and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-01-14 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is at a critical juncture in its economic transformation as it tries to rebalance what is generally seen as an exhausted growth model. A unifying theme across the reforms that will deliver this transformation is that it can no longer be achieved by raising the amount of physical investment and government direction of resource allocation. Instead China is building a new set of policy frameworks that will allow markets to function more effectively—not unfettered markets, but markets that work efficiently, in line with broad social and other policy goals, and in a sustainable way. Hence, China is now building a new soft infrastructure, that is, the institutional plumbing that underpins and guides the functioning of markets as the key organizing principle toward achieving sustained economic and social progress. Against this background, this volume provides policymakers, academics, and the public with valuable information about policies and institutions in China today. It also looks at the road ahead and key principles that can help China in navigating it. The book focuses on issues crucial in the country’s transformation, such as tax policy and administration, social security, state-owned enterprise reform, medium-term expenditure frameworks, the role of local government finances, capital account liberalization, and renminbi internationalization. As China moves toward a more price-based allocation of resources, strengthening monetary policy frameworks and financial sector regulation will be particularly important in channeling resources to the most productive sectors and minimizing the risks of financial sector stress. Also, upgrading statistical frameworks will be critical for macroeconomic policymaking and investors. Visit : http://www.elibrary.imf.org/page/modernizing-china

Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment in China by : Philip D. Grub
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in China written by Philip D. Grub and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-08-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for international business managers and executives, this book offers a comprehensive and authoritative discussion of foreign direct investment in the People's Republic of China. The authors note at the outset that although the events of Tiananmen Square brought both trade and investment to a virtual standstill, new investment is now again flowing into China (but at a guarded pace). For those wishing to pursue the numerous opportunities that still exist, this volume offers a full analysis of the risks involved, a thorough treatment of the different forms of investment activities in China, complete coverage of China's investment policies and incentives, and specific case studies of foreign direct investment in China. The authors begin by providing an overview of the Open Door Policy and China's economic and managerial systems. Next, they discuss special economic zones and open cities; investment policies, such as flexible foreign ownership and choice of investment location; new incentives after 1986; and investment motivations. The modes of foreign investment covered include equity joint ventures, contractual joint ventures, wholly foreign-owned enterprises, joint oil exploration, compensation, and trade. Separate chapters analyze foreign investment inflows, identify the organizations involved in foreign investment, describe investment negotiation and approval procedures, and provide a detailed example of a joint venture feasibility study. Three case studies and an evaluation of the outlook for future foreign investment in China complete the volume. Numerous explanatory tables and figures amplify points made in the text. Two appendixes provide a sample contract and articles of association for joint ventures in China and the regulations for development and opening of the Shanghai Pudong New Area. A third appendix lists the rules for the implementation of Chinese law on wholly foreign-owned enterprises in China.
Download or read book FDI in China written by Yasheng Huang and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China is the largest recipient of foreign direct investment (FDI) among developing countries. This study compares China's FDI performance with a number of other Asian countries and focuses on the policy and institutional factors that lead to a large demand for FDI in China. The policy and institutional factors include import substitution, excess investment demand and features of China's FDI regulatory system. The study shows that there are costs associated with such a high demand for FDI, including overbidding for FDI and the associated loss of Chinese bargaining power, large import demand, and the structure of the FDI at variance with Chinese official policies. This study also briefly discusses the foreign economic policy implications of China's FDI absorption and suggests some future research possibilities.
