Book excerpt: There are number of studies which favor the existence of gender bias in investment patterns. Most of the studies conclude that women invest more conservatively than men (Yao, R. & Hanna, S.D., 2005) and that the women are more risk averse (Julie R. Agnew, 2005). Some studies also contend that women are less confident about their investment decisions and earn less return in compare to men (Barber B and Odean T., 2001). In this context, this paper aims to study whether these gender differences really exist in India. Using NCAER household survey report, the paper examined the household investing and saving patterns of Indian investors. The gender difference has been studied in terms of their risk tolerance viz their risk bearing capacity, risk perception i.e. how they assume risk within different constraints, time horizon for investment, preference for investment alternatives among the vast number of alternatives available in the Indian capital market etc. We also examined the factors which influence the investment behavior of women such as age, level of education, their marital status, income, dependency etc.

Book excerpt: Combining empirical macro evidence and detailed case studies based on fieldwork, this book deals with the interrelated issues of labour, gender and survival among urban workers and the urban poor in India. It provides a gendered understanding of the functioning of the urban labour market and of household survival strategies. By weaving together theoretical insights and empirical evidence, Dr. Kalpagam suggests ways of introducing gender as an analytical category into the discipline of political economy and of introducing patriarchy into studies of the labour market. The book argues forcefully that gender issues cannot be studied in isolation but must be located within the structural context and dynamics of the economy. The author bases her conclusions on a wide cross-section of case studies which include rag-pickers, construction workers, slum and pavement vendors, fisherwomen and export garment workers. In the process, Dr. Kalpagam examines the experiences of women's groups, their struggles and efforts at mobilisation, thereby providing valuable insights into the women's movement in India. Bringing together interesting case studies and analytical insights into the macro-economy within a rigorous theoretical and conceptual framework, this book will interest economists and those engaged in gender studies and development studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book excerpt: "The 2012 report recognized that expanding women's agency - their ability to make decisions and take advantage of opportunities is key to improving their lives as well as the world. This report represents a major advance in global knowledge on this critical front. The vast data and thousands of surveys distilled in this report cast important light on the nature of constraints women and girls continue to face globally. This report identifies promising opportunities and entry points for lasting transformation, such as interventions that reach across sectors and include life-skills training, sexual and reproductive health education, conditional cash transfers, and mentoring. It finds that addressing what the World Health Organization has identified as an epidemic of violence against women means sharply scaling up engagement with men and boys. The report also underlines the vital role information and communication technologies can play in amplifying women's voices, expanding their economic and learning opportunities, and broadening their views and aspirations. The World Bank Group's twin goals of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity demand no less than the full and equal participation of women and men, girls and boys, around the world." -- Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Protect and grow your finances with help from this definitive and practical guide to behavioral economics—revised and updated to reflect new economic realities. In their fascinating investigation of the ways we handle money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological forces—the patterns of thinking and decision making—behind seemingly irrational behavior. They explain why so many otherwise savvy people make foolish financial choices: why investors are too quick to sell winning stocks and too slow to sell losing shares, why home sellers leave money on the table and home buyers don’t get the biggest bang for their buck, why borrowers pay too much credit card interest and savers can’t sock away as much as they’d like, and why so many of us can’t control our spending. Focusing on the decisions we make every day, Belsky and Gilovich provide invaluable guidance for avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year. Filled with fresh insight; practical advice; and lively, illustrative anecdotes, this book gives you the tools you need to harness the powerful science of behavioral economics in any financial environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the determinants of female labor force participation in India, against the backdrop of India having one of the lowest participation rates for women among peer countries. Using extensive Indian household survey data, we model the labor force participation choices of women, conditional on demographic characteristics and education, as well as looking at the influence of state-level labor market flexibility and other state policies. Our main finding is that a number of policy initiatives can help boost female economic participation in the states of India, including increased labor market flexibility, investment in infrastructure, and enhanced social spending.
