Book excerpt: Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 54: System Performance Improvement and Optimization Techniques and their Applications in Aerospace Systems covers the issue of aerospace system performance and optimization techniques in aerospace systems. This book is composed of 12 chapters and begins with an examination of the techniques for aircraft conceptual design for mission performance. The succeeding chapters describe the balances and optimized design for aircraft and spacecraft structures through finite element procedures and the application of the knowledge-based system techniques for pilot aiding. These topics are followed by discussions of the optimal sensor placement for on-orbit modal identification experiments; the optimization techniques for helicopter airframe vibrations design; the size reduction techniques for efficient aeroservoelastic model determination; sensitivity analysis of eigendata of aeroelastic systems; and a simplified solution for transient structural dynamic problems with local nonlinearities. Other chapters explore a reduction algorithm for systems with integrators and the techniques for overcoming the difficulty of nonuniqueness of mode shape in modal analysis when random input data are not or cannot be measured. The last chapters consider the combined concepts of Krylov vectors and parameter matching and their application to develop model-reduction algorithms for structural dynamics. These chapters also provide the techniques for the development of new tracking algorithms that would incorporate explicit models of the maneuvering/nonmaneuvering phases of target encounter. This book will prove useful to aerospace, control, systems, and design engineers.

Book excerpt: Mechatronics and automation technology has led to technological change and innovation in all engineering fields, affecting various disciplines, including machine technology, electronics, and computing. It plays a vital role in improving production efficiency, reducing energy consumption and improving product quality and safety, and will be central to the further advancement of technology and industry, bringing convenience and innovation to even more areas. This book presents the proceedings of ICMAT 2023, the 2nd International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation Technology, held as a virtual event on 27 October 2023. The aim of the conference was to provide a platform for scientists, scholars, engineers and researchers from universities and scientific institutes around the world to share the latest research achievements in mechatronics and automation technology, explore key challenges and research directions, and promote the development and application of theory and technology in this field. A total of 121 submissions were received for the conference, of which 77 were ultimately accepted after a rigorous peer-review process. The papers cover a wide range of topics falling within the scope of mechatronics and automation technology, including smart manufacturing; digital manufacturing; additive manufacturing; robotics; sensors; control; electronic and electrical engineering; intelligent systems; and automation technology, as well as other related fields. Providing an overview of recent developments in mechatronics and automation technology, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composites materials have aroused a great interest over the last few decades. Several applications of fibrous composites, functionally graded materials, laminated composites, nano-structured reinforcements, morphing structures, can be found in many engineering fields, such as aerospace, mechanical, naval and civil engineering. The necessity of lightweight structures, smart and adaptive systems, high-level strength, have led both the academic research and the manufacturing development to a recurring employment of these materials. Many journal papers and technical notes have been published extensively over the last seventy years in international scientific journals of different engineering fields. For this reason, the establishment of this second edition of Mechanics of Composites International Conference has appeared appropriate to continue what has been begun during the first edition occurred in 2014 at Stony Brook University (USA). MECHCOMP wants to be an occasion for many researchers from each part of the globe to meet and discuss about the recent advancements regarding the use of composite structures. As a proof of this event, which has taken place in Porto (Portugal), selected plenary and key-note lectures have been collected in the present book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, "intelligent (sm. o. rt) structures antlllJ/stems" has become an emerging new research area that is multi-disciplinary in nature, requiring technical expertise from mechanical engineering, structural engineering, electrical engineering, applied mechanics, engineering mathematics, material science, computer science, biological science, etc. This technology is quite likely to contribute significant advancements in the design of high-performance structures, adaptive structures, high-precision systems, micro-systems, etc. Although this emerging area has been rapidly gathering momentum in the last few years, researchers are aware that to some extent only initial, but highly feasible studies of the concepts proposed have been conducted. It is obvious that many important, pertinent fundamental research subjects must yet be investigated and resolved in the near future. We have the privilege to invite a number of highly regarded research scientists and engineers to summarize and contribute the results of their years of research experience with the evolution of intelligent (smart) structures and systems to the collection of chapters contained in this book. Their research topics include current intelligent (smart) structures research activities, piezoelectric structures, shape memory alloy reinforced composites, applications of electrorheological fluids, intelligent sensor systems, adaptive precision trusses, damage detection, model refinement, control of axial moving continua, distributed transducers, etc. These subjects represent only a small portion of the complete picture; indeed, the fundamentally important development of smart or intelligent materials is not addressed in detail here.
