Book excerpt: Specification of flow parameters in a moving fluid usually requires knowledge of velocity components in more than one dimension. Using the laser Doppler technique, velocity components may be measured with a great number of geometries. This study investigated combinations of geometries useful for constructing a two-dimensional velocimeter. Three systems underwent extensive study, two incident beam forward scatter, single incident beam forward scatter, and single incident beam forward and backward scatter. System parameters investigated experimentally and theoretically included cross-talk between beam polarization effects, relative scattering intensities, and measurement point constraints. Turbulent flow in a 4-inch-diameter pipe was used to demonstrate the measurement technique utilizing the single beam forward scatter system. Coordinate transformations between velocimeter coordinates and flow system coordinates were derived. (Author).

Book excerpt: Until recently measuring the velocity of a fluid required the insertion of some instrument into the flow which would disturb the flow. The development of the laser doppler anemometer has created a means of measuring flow velocity using two intersecting monochromatic light beams, one of which has been shifted in frequency a prescribed amount. In order to use the type of laser doppler anemometer owned by M.I.T. the light beams must be able to traverse the test section and the scattered light be collected by the receiving optics. This requires a transparent model in order to measure the flow around the entire model. This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of such a method and is an account of the special techniques used to obtain the data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frank J. Seiler Research Laboratory (FJSRL) at the U.S. Air Force Academy is conducting a comprehensive experimental research program to study unsteady, separated flows and, in particular, the dynamic stall of oscillating airfoils. The aim of this study is to achieve a clearer understanding into the physical mechanisms responsible for dynamic stall and to capitalize on these unique stall features by using them to improve the turn performance and maneuverability of flight vehicles. The objective of one phase of this experimental research program has been to adapt a general purpose Laser Doppler VElocimetry (LDV) two velocity component system to dynamic stall experiments in the Subsonic Wind Tunnel at the USAFA. The preliminary design of the LDV system, its special constraints and the characterization of system signal and noise parameters are described. Results presented for the initial operation of the LDV system demonstrate its performance capabilities. It has been observed that accurate measurements in the wind tunnel environment can be achieved only when optical noise produced by scattered laser light from wind tunnel surfaces is minimized. While the LDV system configuration satisfies all constraints related to the USAFA Subsonic Wind Tunnel geometry and is capable of accurate velocity measurements in the two-dimensional flow field surrounding an airfoil, a reconfiguration of the system is suggested to improve optical alignment procedures and overall system signal-to-noise ratio. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to compare numerical predictions with experimental results and to devise an accurate laser anemometry technique to measure in the endwall region of a confined annulus. Flowfield characteristics were computed using a three-dimensional flow solver with the numerical plane coincident with the experimental measurement location. An annular turbine cascade, designed for laser-Doppler velocimetry, was modified to obtain blade passage midspan surface pressure measurements. A range of predicted subsonic and transonic midspan surface pressures were compared favorably with experimental measurements. Two-dimensional Mach number, flow angle, and turbulence intensity measurements were obtained with a fiber-optics laser- Doppler velocimeter. These measurements were performed through a 1.0922 millimeter opening in the endwall at depths ranging from 0.01 mm to 3.34 mm and the results were compared with numerical predictions. (AN).

Book excerpt: Providing the first comprehensive treatment, this book covers all aspects of the laser Doppler and phase Doppler measurement techniques, including light scattering from small particles, fundamental optics, system design, signal and data processing, tracer particle generation, and applications in single and two-phase flows. The book is intended as both a reference book for more experienced users as well as an instructional book for students. It provides ample material as a basis for a lecture course on the subject and represents one of the most comprehensive treatments of the phase Doppler technique to date. The book will serve as a valuable reference book in any fluid mechanics laboratory where the laser Doppler or phase Doppler techniques are used. This work reflects the authors' long practical experience in the development of the techniques and equipment, as the many examples confirm.

The current configurations of the LDV optics and the high frequency signal processors are discussed. LDV measurements made in two-dimensional transonic nozzles and in the turbulent wake of an axisymmetric supersonic nozzle are presented. These are compared with previous experimental and analytical results. Excellent agreement is found to exist. Measurement problems presented by flows of extremely high turbulence intensity are illustrated and means for resolving them are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing possibilities of computer-aided data processing have caused a new revival of optical techniques in many areas of mechanical and chemical en gineering. Optical methods have a long tradition in heat and mass transfer and in fluid dynamics. Global experimental information is not sufficient for developing constitution equations to describe complicated phenomena in fluid dynamics or in transfer processes by a computer program . Furthermore, a detailed insight with high local and temporal resolution into the thermo-and fluiddynamic situations is necessary. Sets of equations for computer program in thermo dynamics and fluid dynamics usually consist of two types of formulations: a first one derived from the conservation laws for mass, energy and momentum, and a second one mathematically modelling transport processes like laminar or turbulent diffusion. For reliably predicting the heat transfer, for example, the velocity and temperature field in the boundary layer must be known, or a physically realistic and widely valid correlation describing the turbulence must be avail able. For a better understanding of combustion processes it is necessary to know the local concentration and temperature just ahead of the flame and in the ignition zone.
