Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process by which a wing or rotor blade tip vortex is generated has been studied in a water tunnel using dye and hydrogen bubble flow visualisation techniques. In particular, the effects of the shape of the lateral tip edge on vortex formation have been examined. Three edges shapes were tested-a square tip, a square tip with rounded fairing, and a square tip with bevelled fairing. The square tip was found to have the most complicated vortex system, with vortices forming on the tip edge face as well as above the wing. The observed flow features ere generally similar to those proposed in the literature on the basis of pressure measurements, velocity measurements, and surface flow visualization in wind tunnels and on whirl towers. The vortex systems for the rounded and bevelled tips were less complicated. The shape of the tip edge has a significant effect on the structure of the tip vortex system, and may thus influence the tip loading characteristics. Verification of this will require further testing. (Author).
Book Synopsis Full-Potential Modeling of Blade-Vortex Interactions by : Henry E. Jones
Download or read book Full-Potential Modeling of Blade-Vortex Interactions written by Henry E. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the full-potential modeling of a blade-vortex interaction was made. A primary goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the various methods of modeling the vortex. The model problem restricts the interaction to that of an infinite wing with an infinite line vortex moving parallel to its leading edge. This problem provides a convenient testing ground for the various methods of modeling the vortex while retaining the essential physics of the full three-dimensional interaction. A full-potential algorithm specifically tailored to solve the blade-vortex interaction (BVI) was developed to solve this problem. The basic algorithm was modified to include the effect of a vortex passing near the airfoil. Four different methods of modeling the vortex were used: (1) the angle-of-attack methods, (2) the lifting-surface method, (3) the branch-cut method, and (4) the split-potential method. A side-by-side comparison of the four models was conducted. these comparisons included comparing generated velocity fields, a subcritical interaction, and a critical interaction. The subcritical and critical interactions are compared with experimentally generate results. The split-potential model was used to make a survey of some of the more critical parameters which affect the BVI.

Download or read book Devices that Alter the Tip Vortex of a Rotor written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small devices were attached near the tip of a hovering rotor blade in order to alter the structure and trajectory of the trailing vortex. Stereo particle image velocimetry (PIV) images were used to quantify the wake behind the rotor blade during the first revolution. A procedure for analyzing the 3D-velocity field is presented that includes a method for accounting for vortex wander. The results show that a vortex generator can alter the trajectory of the trailing vortex and that a major change in the size and intensity of the trailing vortex can be achieved by introducing a high level of turbulence into the core of the vortex.

Book Synopsis Experimental Investigation of Vortex Shedding in Flow Over Second- Generation, Controlled-Diffusion, Compressor Blades in Cascade by : Peter J. Brown

This book was released on 2002-03 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of vortex shedding downstream of a cascade of second-generation, controlled-diffusion, compressor stator blades, at off-design inlet-flow angles of 31, 33 and 35 degrees and Reynolds numbers, based on chord length, of 280,000, 380,000 and 640,000 is reported. The objective of the study was to characterize the flow and shedding through various complementary methods. Blade surface pressure measurements were taken from a fully instrumented blade, and distributions of pressure coefficients were determined. Five-hole probe wake surveys were performed at midspan, and the total pressure loss coefficients and axial velocity ratios were calculated. Upstream inlet-flow angle was set, and further characterized through two-component laser- Doppler velocimetry (LDV). Hot-wire anemometry measurements were performed at midspan, in the wake, and the reduced data were compared with two-component LDV surveys of the same regions. Plots of hot-wire vs. LDV turbulence data are reported in addition to power spectra documenting the shedding events. Vortex shedding was determined to be a leading edge phenomenon as periodic shedding was only detected on the pressure side of the wake. The frequency and magnitude of shedding were found to be independent of incidence angle, and to increase with Reynolds number at constant incidence angle. The Strouhal number, based on leading edge diameter, was found to be in the range of 0.23-0.26, which is comparable to that of vortex shedding behind a circular cylinder in the Reynolds number range tested.
