Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of fuel injection, spray atomization and vaporization, charge cooling, mixture preparation and the control of in-cylinder air motion are all being actively researched and this work is reviewed in detail and analyzed. The new technologies such as high-pressure, common-rail, gasoline injection systems and swirl-atomizing gasoline fuel injections are discussed in detail, as these technologies, along with computer control capabilities, have enabled the current new examination of an old objective; the direct-injection, stratified-charge (DISC), gasoline engine. The prior work on DISC engines that is relevant to current GDI engine development is also reviewed and discussed. The fuel economy and emission data for actual engine configurations have been obtained and assembled for all of the available GDI literature, and are reviewed and discussed in detail. The types of GDI engines are arranged in four classifications of decreasing complexity, and the advantages and disadvantages of each class are noted and explained. Emphasis is placed upon consensus trends and conclusions that are evident when taken as a whole; thus the GDI researcher is informed regarding the degree to which engine volumetric efficiency and compression ratio can be increased under optimized conditions, and as to the extent to which unburned hydrocarbon (UBHC), NOx and particulate emissions can be minimized for specific combustion strategies. The critical area of GDI fuel injector deposits and the associated effect on spray geometry and engine performance degradation are reviewed, and important system guidelines for minimizing deposition rates and deposit effects are presented. The capabilities and limitations of emission control techniques and after treatment hardware are reviewed in depth, and a compilation and discussion of areas of consensus on attaining European, Japanese and North American emission standards presented. All known research, prototype and production GDI engines worldwide are reviewed as to performance, emissions and fuel economy advantages, and for areas requiring further development. The engine schematics, control diagrams and specifications are compiled, and the emission control strategies are illustrated and discussed. The influence of lean-NOx catalysts on the development of late-injection, stratified-charge GDI engines is reviewed, and the relative merits of lean-burn, homogeneous, direct-injection engines as an option requiring less control complexity are analyzed.

The two-stroke engine will be used as the testing engine that the performances can be determined. The objective of this project is to investigate and analysis the performance of two-stroke engine using a 1-Dimensional (engine gas dynamic) software. From this objective, the outcome of the project can be determined by using the 1-Dimensional software. The outcomes that need to be determined from this project are the performances of the engine. The 1-Dimensional software that was using in this project is GT-Power. GT-Power is using to model and simulate the two-stroke engine. First, the parameters of the two-stroke engine had been measured and then the modeling of the two-stroke engine had been built and simulated. After simulation process, the performances of the engines can be obtained right away. There are many information that can be taken from the GT-Power after simulating the engine but for analyzing, only several data had been chosen. Those data are pressure for scavenged port, in-cylinder and exhaust port, temperature for scavenged port, in-cylinder and exhaust port, brake power, brake torque, indicated mean effective pressure and brake specific fuel consumption. All of this information had been analyzed and the optimum engine speed had been determined at 1500 RPM to 2500 RPM because in this range, the brake torque and brake power is maximum while the brake specific fuel consumption also low.

Book excerpt: Various combinations of commercially available technologies could greatly reduce fuel consumption in passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and other light-duty vehicles without compromising vehicle performance or safety. Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy estimates the potential fuel savings and costs to consumers of available technology combinations for three types of engines: spark-ignition gasoline, compression-ignition diesel, and hybrid. According to its estimates, adopting the full combination of improved technologies in medium and large cars and pickup trucks with spark-ignition engines could reduce fuel consumption by 29 percent at an additional cost of $2,200 to the consumer. Replacing spark-ignition engines with diesel engines and components would yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of approximately $5,900 per vehicle, and replacing spark-ignition engines with hybrid engines and components would reduce fuel consumption by 43 percent at an increase of $6,000 per vehicle. The book focuses on fuel consumption-the amount of fuel consumed in a given driving distance-because energy savings are directly related to the amount of fuel used. In contrast, fuel economy measures how far a vehicle will travel with a gallon of fuel. Because fuel consumption data indicate money saved on fuel purchases and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, the book finds that vehicle stickers should provide consumers with fuel consumption data in addition to fuel economy information.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Dilute combustion is an effective way to increase part-load efficiencies in a Spark Ignition (SI) engine. However, dilute combustion leads to a slower combustion rate and longer burn durations, which results in higher heat transfer loss. To overcome this, some degree of charge flow enhancement exists in modern engines that improves combustion rate and shortens burn durations. This flow enhancement has an adverse effect on performance of the modern Transistorized Coil Ignition (TCI) system and hence presents a limitation on improving combustion rates. Additionally, dilute combustion has a detrimental effect on combustion stability, wherein a larger variation in engine cycle work is observed from cycle to cycle which degrades engine performance. Improving combustion stability under dilution poses a challenge for the modern single coil ignition system, which is where the motivation lies in this research. This research details the development and instrumentation of a Configurable Dual Coil Ignition (CDCI) system that is later tested on a single cylinder metal engine. The effectiveness of different ignition profiles developed with the CDCI system in extending the dilution limit while maintaining combustion performance and lower cycle-cycle variations, thereby improving fuel conversion efficiency, is investigated. Effects of dilution by excess air and internal (exhaust) residuals on the performance of these ignition profiles are investigated under different operating conditions. In-cylinder flow is enhanced by means of tumble planks installed in the intake port of the engine. The impact of enhanced in-cylinder flow on the capabilities of the developed ignition profiles is also investigated under different conditions. Moreover, effects of different spark plug gap sizes and orientations are also investigated. Although majority of the tests are done with Direct Injection (DI) gasoline, some tests are performed with Port Fuel Injection (PFI) methane to compare the effects of fuel delivery and charge preparation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents research efforts made in three different phases with the objective of improving the fuel economy of and reducing exhaust emissions from conventional, carbureted, two-stroke spark ignition (SI) engines, which are widely employed in two-wheel transportation in India. A review concerning the existing two-stroke engine technology for this application is included. In the first phase, a new scavenging system was developed and tested to reduce the loss of fresh charge through the exhaust port. In die second phase, the following measures were carried out to improve the combustion process: (1) using an in-cylinder catalyst, such as copper, chromium, and nickel, in the form of coating; (2) providing moderate thermal insulation in the combustion chamber, either by depositing thin ceramic material or by metal inserts; (3) developing a high-energy ignition system; and (4) employing high-octane fuel, such as methanol, ethanol, eucalyptus oil, and orange oil, as a blending agent with gasoline. Based on the effectiveness of the above measures, an optimized design was developed in the final phase to achieve improved performance. Test results indicate that with an optimized two-stroke SI engine, the maximum percentage improvement in brake thermal efficiency is about 31%, together with a reduction of 3400 ppm in hydrocarbons (HC) and 3% by volume of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions over the normal engine (at 3 kW, 3000 rpm). Higher cylinder peak pressures (3-5 bar), lower ignition delay (2-4°CA)° and shorter combustion duration (4-10 °CA) are obtained. The knock-limited power output is also enhanced by 12.7% at a high compression ratio (CR) of 9:1. The proposed modifications in the optimized design are simple, low-cost and easy to adopt for both production and existing engines.

This book was released on 1964 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RAM vee-4, two-stroke stratified charge engine is a spark-ignition, blown, pressure lubricated, port valve engine with a cam actuated auxiliary air inlet poppet valve. It is designed to operate with lean air-fuel ratios, like a compression-ignition engine, but with a low compression ration and spark ignition. No carburetor is employed. Either timed or continuous manifold fuel injection upstream from the auxiliary valve may be used. The tests reported here are for continuous injection. Valve timing had the most pronounced effect on hydrocarbon emissions, followed by auxiliary-air pressure. Spark timing, oil temperature and jacket water temperature also influenced the emissions but to a lesser extent. These adjustments also affected the specific fuel consumption. Generally an adjustment which reduced the air-fuel ratio also reduced the hydrocarbons. The current data suggest that timed fuel injection in place of continuous injection may result in a further significant reduction of hydrocarbons in the exhaust. (Author).
