Book excerpt: The overall goal of this project is to study nucleus-nucleus collisions experimentally at intermediate and relativistic energies, with emphasis on measurement and interpretation of correlation effects that provide insight into the nuclear phase diagram and the nuclear equation of state. During the past year, the PI has been on leave at Lawrence Berkeley Lab and has worked on this research project full-time. A large fraction of the effort of the PI and graduate students has gone into preparing for experiments using the Time Projection Chamber at LBL's Bevalac accelerator; in March 1992, this device successfully took data in production mode for the first time, and the first physics analysis is now under way. The PI has carried out simulations that help to define the physics performance and engineering specifications of the recently-approved STAR detector for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and has identified a new capability of this device with the potential for being an important quark-gluon plasma signature. A Postdoctoral Fellow, jointly supported by this grant and Kent State University, has been recruited to augment these efforts. Since May 1991, 11 journal papers have been published or submitted for publication; 2 conference proceedings and 9 reports or abstracts have also been published during the past year. One paper in Phys. Rev. Left., one in Phys. Rev. C, and one conference proceedings are based on the thesis project of one of the PI's Ph. D. students who is expected to graduate later this year. Partly in response to the impending closure of the Bevalac, the PI's group has recently joined the NA49 experiment at CERN.

Book excerpt: The overall goal of this project is to study nucleus-nucleus collisions experimentally at intermediate and relativistic energies, with emphasis on measurement and interpretation of correlation effects that provide insight into the nuclear phase diagram and the nuclear equation of state. During the course of this reporting period, the PI returned to Kent from a 15-month leave at Lawrence Berkeley Lab, which had been devoted 100% to work on this research project. The EOS Time Projection Chamber at LBL's Bevalac accelerator has continued to be the major focus of research for all of the supported personnel; about a year ago, this detector successfully took data in production mode for the first time, and accumulated in excess of 1000 hours of beam time before the termination of the Bevalac in February 1993. Reduction and analysis of these data is currently our first priority. Effort has also been devoted to the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, in the form of contributions to the Conceptual Design Report, work on HV control hardware and software for use with the STAR Time Projection Chamber, and tracking software development.

Book excerpt: The 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics carried on the tradition, started in 1978, of bringing together scientists working in all regimes of nuclear dynamics. This broad range of related topics allows the researcher attending the Workshop to be exposed to work that normally would be considered outside his/her field, but could po tentially add a new dimension to the understanding of his/her work. At Snowbird, we brought together experimentalists working with heavy ion beams from 10 MeV/nucleon up to 200 GeV /nucleon and theoretical physicists working in diverse areas ranging from antisymmetrized fermionic dynamics to perturbative quantum chromo dynamics. Fu ture work at RHIC was discussed also, with presentations from several of the experimen tal groups. In addition, several talks addressed issues of cross-disciplinary relevance, from the study of water-drop-collisions, to the multi-fragmentation of buckyballs. Clearly the field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. The understanding of the nuclear equation of state in all of its manifestations is being expanded on all fronts both theoretically and experimentally. Future Workshops on Nuclear Dynamics will certainly have much progress to report. Gary D. Book excerpt: We study the role of the nuclear equation of state in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions using microscopic dynamical calculations. The relevant properties of the nuclear equation of state, and their manifestation in fragmentation reactions and Bevalac-energy collisions are reviewed. The available data on these collisions is summarized. We calculate the disassembly of hot charged classical drops that have an equation of state similar to that of nuclear matter. It is found that the region of adiabatic instability of the liquid-vapor phase transition is responsible for the rapid fragmentation of hot systems. For cooler drops, we find that this unstable region causes large deformations in the droplet shape that are exploited by the Coulomb force, resulting in fast binary and multiple fission decay modes. We discuss the use of the Vlasov-Nordheim equation in calculating heavy-ion collisions, and present a new method for solving the nuclear Vlasov equation with far greater accuracy than other existing methods. This method is used to study the role of the quantum Fermi motion is heavy-ion collisions. We also study the accuracy of Vlasov-Nordheim theory in the classical limit (i.e., Vlasov-Boltzmann) by comparing its predictions with the exact results of a classical model of heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that, although the Vlasov-Boltzmann theory can reproduce the general trends, it fails to reproduce the correct values of several specific observables. In this limited study, we do not find that the theory is very useful for deducing that incompressibility of matter from collision data.

Book excerpt: A better understanding of the density dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter, particularly at high den- sities, is crucial for interpreting many astrophysical phenomena e.g. neutron stars and supernovae, where model descriptions require inputs for the behaviour of the EOS with extreme values of the symmetry energy. The nuclear EOS is a fundamental property of nuclear matter, which describes the relationships between its thermodynamic properties but is insufficiently constrained by ex- periment. Indeed the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter is poorly understood, largely due to a lack of knowledge regarding the density depen- dence of the nuclear symmetry energy term, especially at densities considerably greater than that of normal nuclear matter. Theoretical studies based on either microscopic many-body theories or phenomenological approaches give widely divergent predictions of this quantity. While considerable progress has been achieved over recent years in determining the symmetry energy at saturation and sub-saturation nuclear matter densities, much more work is still needed to probe its behaviour at supra-saturation densities. Until recently, there has been little possibility to study experimentally the density dependence of the symmetry energy. This situation is changing dramatically as new radioactive beam facilities become operational. These facilities promise to revolutionise our knowledge of the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter. Heavy- ion reactions induced by neutron-rich nuclei have thus a crucial role to play in this field of research. They provide a unique tool for obtaining information concerning the high-density behaviour of the symmetry energy in a laboratory environment. This thesis reports on an experimental feasibility study into the use of observables of collective flow measured in relativistic heavy-ion collisions to investigate the symmetry energy at supra-saturation densities.

Book excerpt: The parallel sessions on Heavy Ion Physics covered several areas of recent progress in characterizing the nuclear equation of state and the search for deconfined quark matter. Studies of systems from 1 to several hundred GeV/nucleon have been made in order to map the behavior of nuclear matter over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. We have also considered results from proton-nucleus reactions in the heavy ion physics discussions. This should help untangle nuclear effects'' due to the presence of relatively undisturbed nuclear matter from observables arising in the hot, dense part of the system. Even though heavy ion physics covers a large range of bombarding energies, the same two basic questions must be answered. The first problem is to characterize the system that has been produced. We need to determine the energy density, lifetime, temperature and baryon density reached in the collision before expansion and particle production. Then we may address the second issue and look for evidence of new physics. At this meeting, we heard new results from experiments, and theoretical analyses which strive to explain all available data, including those from proton-nucleus collisions. We explored heavy quark production, which may indicate quark matter through color screening of c{bar c} pairs. We heard new results in strangeness production, which has been predicted to be enhanced if quark matter is formed. There were also discussions of jets and minijets, which may probe the hot, dense matter existing early in the collision.

Subnucleonic degrees of freedom are invoked at high energy densities and at short length-scales. Questions of dynamical collision simulations are investigated. Direct support is provided for experiment in the form of collaborative projects. The major objective of this nuclear theory program is a better understanding of the properties of strongly interacting matter on the nuclear energy scale, as manifested in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symmetry energy is the energy difference between symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter at a given density. Around normal nuclear density, i.e. p/p0 =1, and temperature, i.e. T = 0, the symmetry energy is approximately 23.5 MeV/nucleon for finite nuclear matter and 30 MeV/nucleon for infinite nuclear matter, but at other densities, the symmetry energies are very poorly understood. Since the symmetry energy is very important in understanding many aspects of heavy ion reactions, structure, and nuclear astrophysics, many different models have been developed and some predications of the density dependence of symmetry energy have been made. Intermediate energy heavy ion collisions provide a unique tool to probe the nuclear equation of state. The initial compression and the thermal shock in Fermi- Energy heavy ion collisions lead naturally to the production of nucleonic matter at varying temperatures and densities which are interesting in this context. Since the light particle emission during this stage witnesses each stage of the reaction, it carries essential information on the early dynamics and on the degree of equilibration at each stage of the reaction. The kinematic features and yields of emitted light particles and clusters in the invairant velocity frame have been exploited to probe the nature of the intermediate system and information on the Equation Of State (EOS) with emphasis on the properties of the low density participant matter produced in such collisions. In order to pursue this effort and broaden the density range over which the symmetry energies are experimentally determined we have now carried out a series of experiments in which the reactions of 112Sn and 124Sn with projectiles, ranging from 4He, 10B, 20Ne, 40Ar to 64Zn, all at the same energy per nucleon, 47 Mev/u, were performed. In this series of experiments different collision systems should lead to different average densities. By careful comparisons of the yields, spectra and angular distributions observed for particle emission from these different systems we attempted to cleanly separate early emission resulting from nucleon-nucleon collisions from that resulting from evaporation from the thermalized system and obtain a much cleaner picture of the dynamic evolution of the hotter systems. The Albergo Model has been used to calculate the density and temperature, symmetry free energies with the isoscaling technique for systems with different N/Z ratios. Those are compared with Roepke Model results. Also other models like VEOS, Lattimer, and Shen-Toki have been added to calculate the alpha mass fraction in order to understand the properties of low density matter further.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of the nuclear equation of state on high-energy heavy-ion collisions is studied in two separate ways on the basis of conventional nuclear fluid dynamics. The equation of state has the property that the speed of sound approaches the speed of light in the limit of infinite compression. In the first way, nonrelativistic equations of motion are solved for various values of the nuclear compressibility coefficient for the expansion of spherically symmetric nuclear matter. The matter is initially compressed and excited in head-on collisions of equal targets and projectiles at a laboratory bombarding energy of 250 MeV/A. When the matter expands to a freezeout density, the remaining thermal energy is superimposed in terms of a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. The resulting energy distributions for different values of the compressibility coefficient are similar to one another, but they are significantly different from a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution corresponding to entirely thermal energy and moderately different from the energy distribution corresponding to the Siemens-Rasmussen approximation. In the second way, relativistic equations of motion are solved numerically in three spatial dimensions for the reaction 2°Ne + 238U at a laboratory bombarding energy per nucleon of 393 MeV/A, both with and without a density isomer. The double-differential cross section d2sigma/dEd.cap omega. corresponding both to all impact parameters and to central collisions constituting 15% of the total cross section is computed. The results for the various equations of state are very similar to one another except for central collisions at laboratory angle theta = 30° and for both central collisions and all impact parameters at theta = 150°. In these cases, over certain ranges of energy, d2sigma/dEd.cap omega. is larger for the density isomer than for conventional equations of state. 8 figures.
