This book was released on 1965 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From measurements of the temperature dependence of the amplitude of ultrasonic pulses propagated over a fixed path in liquid helium, the attenuation coefficient has been determined at the six frequencies 1.00, 2.02, 3.91, 6.08, 10.2, and 11.7 Mc/sec, at temperatures extending down to 0.2K. Below 0.6K, the observed variation of the absorption coefficient a (1/cm) with frequency f (Mc/sec) and temperature T (K) can be represented by the empirical equation a=0.11 (f to the 2/3 power)(Tcubed). This behavior differs from that predicted by several existing theories that are based upon the threephonon or four-phonon interaction between longitudinal acoustic quanta and thermal phonons. Over the temperature interval 0.6-0.8K, the measured attenuation is somewhat greater than would be expected from an extrapolation of the results below 0.6K into this temperature region. A comparison of the data with some calculations by Khalatnikov suggests that the additional absorption arises from thermal conduction in the normal fluid. An equation that is analogous to the classical Kirchhoff expression adequately accounts for this contribution to the total absorption, even at temperatures for which the lifetime of the thermal phonons exceeds the period of the sound wave. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the action of acoustic vibrations a liquid is converted into the aerosol state at the interface between a gaseous and a liq uid medium. Acoustic energy can be delivered to the atomization zone either on the liquid side or on the gas side. Ordinarily, when acoustic energy is delivered through the gas, the atomization of the liquid is realized by sonic and low-frequency ultrasonic vibra tions because high-frequency ultrasound is rapidly damped in prop agation through gases. But if the acoustic energy is delivered through the liquid, whose damping factor is orders of magnitude smaller than in gases, atomization can be realized by sonic, low frequency ultrasonic, or high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations. The following is a convenient classification of methods for the ultra sonic atomization of a liquid: 1. atomization of the liquid with the transmission of acoustic energy to the working zone through the liquid: a. atomization in a layer; b. atomization in a fountain; 2. atomization of the liquid with the transmission of acoustic energy to the working zone through the gas. 3 Chapter 1 Acoustic Atomization of Liquids The atomization of liquids by ultrasound (at a frequency of 300 kHz) was discovered in the classical studies of Wood and Loomis [1]. The first experimental investigation of the physical nature of the 8tomization of a liquid by ultrasound was conducted by Sollner [2].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.
