Book excerpt: A small-scale transonic investigation of two semispan wings of the same plan form was made in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel through a Mach number range of 0.70 to 1.10 and a mean-test Reynolds number range of 745,000 to 845,000 to determine the effects of partial-span leading-edge camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of a swept-back wing. This paper presents the results of the investigation of wing-alone and wing-fuselage configurations of the two wings; one, was an uncambered wing and the other had the forward 45 percent of the chord cambered over the outboard 55 percent of the span. The semispan wings had 50deg 38ft sweepback of their quarter-chord lines, aspect ratio of 2.98, taper ratio of 0.45, and modified NACA 64A-series airfoil sections tapered in thickness ratio. Lift, drag, pitching moment, and root-bending moment were obtained for these configurations. The results indicated that, for the wing-alone configuration, use of the partial-span leading-edge camber provided an increase in maximum lift-drag ratios up to a Mach number of 0.95, after which no gain was realized. For the wing-fuselage combination, the partial-span leading-edge camber appeared to cause no gain in maximum lift-drag ratio throughout the test range of Mach numbers. The lift-curve slopes of the partial-span leading-edge camber configurations indicated no significant change over the basic configurations in the subsonic range but resulted in slight reductions at the higher Mach numbers. No significantly large changes in pitching-moment-curve slopes or lateral center of additional loading were indicated because of the modification.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been made at Mach numbers of 1.61 and 2.01 to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of three wings having a sweepback of 50 degrees at the quarter-chord line, a taper ratio of 0.20, an NACA 65A005 thickness distribution, and an aspect ratio of 3.5. One wing was flat, one had at each spanwise station an a equals 0 mean line modified to have a maximum height of 4% chord, and one had a linear variation of twist with 6 degrees of washout at the tip. When compared with the flat wing, the effect of the linear variation of twist with 6 degrees of washout at the tip was to increase the lift-drag ratio when the leading edge was subsonic; but little increase in lift-drag ratio was obtained when the leading edge was supersonic. Pitching moment was increased and gave a positive trim point without greatly affecting the rate of change of pitching moment with lift coefficient. For the cambered wing the high minimum drag resulted in comparatively low liftdrag ratios. In addition, the pitching moments were decreased so that a negative trim point was obtained. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation at low scale has been made in the Langley stab unity tunnel in order to determine the effect of linear spanwise variations of twist and circular-arc camber on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics and static-stability and rotary-stability (rolling and yawing) derivatives of a wing of aspect ratio 4, taper ratio 0.6, and with 45 deg sweepback of the quarter-chord line. Results of the investigation indicate that twist or camber produced only small changes in the maximum lift coefficient. A combination of camber and twist was more effective than twist alone in providing an increase in the maximum lift-to-drag ratio in the moderate lift-coefficient range for the wings investigated. The variation of static longitudinal stability through the lift-coefficient range was less for the twisted wing than for the twisted and cambered or plane wing. A combination of twist and camber generally extended the initial linear range of several of the static- and rotary-stability derivatives to a higher lift coefficient and, although these effects were small, higher Reynolds numbers may result in larger effects.

This book was released on 1956 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free-flight investigation has been made to determine the effect of wing camber and twist at Mach numbers from 1.4 to 2.1 on the lift, drag, and longitudinal stability of a configuration having a 52.5 degree sweptback wing of aspect ratio 3, and inline tail surfaces. The wing was cambered and twisted to have low drag at a wing lift coefficient of 0.3 and at a Mach number of 1.46. The method reported in NACA Report 1226 was used to determine the wing warp. The model was aerodynamically pulsed in pitch throughout the flight of the model alone. Drag polars, normal force, pitching moment, static longitudinal stability, and wash effects at the horizontal tail were obtained. Comparisons are made with data from a similar model that had a flat (untwisted and uncambered) wing.
