Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing has recently been the completion of choice for most tight gas bearing formations. It has proven successful to produce these formations in a commercial manner. However, some considerations have to be taken into account to design an optimum stimulation treatment that leads to the maximum possible productivity. These considerations include, but not limited to, non-Darcy flow and multiphase flow effects inside the fracture. These effects reduce the fracture conductivity significantly. Failing to account for that results in overestimating the deliverability of the well and, consequently, to designing a fracture treatment that is not optimum. In this work a thorough investigation of non-Darcy flow and multi-phase flow effects on the productivity of hydraulically fractured wells is conducted and an optimum fracture design is proposed for a tight gas formation in south Texas using the Unified Fracture Design (UFD) Technique to compensate for the mentioned effects by calculating the effective fracture permeability in an iterative way. Incorporating non-Darcy effects results in an optimum fracture that is shorter and wider than the fracture when only Darcy calculations are considered. That leads to a loss of production of 5, 18% due to dry and multiphase non-Darcy flow effects respectively. A comparison between the UFD and 3D simulators is also done to point out the differences in terms of methodology and results. Since UFD incorporated the maximum dimensionless productivity index in the fracture dimensions design, unlike 3D simulators, it can be concluded that using UFD to design the fracture treatment and then use the most important fracture parameters outputs (half length and CfDopt) as inputs in the simulators is a recommended approach.

Book excerpt: Multiphase Fluid Flow in Porous and Fractured Reservoirs discusses the process of modeling fluid flow in petroleum and natural gas reservoirs, a practice that has become increasingly complex thanks to multiple fractures in horizontal drilling and the discovery of more unconventional reservoirs and resources. The book updates the reservoir engineer of today with the latest developments in reservoir simulation by combining a powerhouse of theory, analytical, and numerical methods to create stronger verification and validation modeling methods, ultimately improving recovery in stagnant and complex reservoirs. Going beyond the standard topics in past literature, coverage includes well treatment, Non-Newtonian fluids and rheological models, multiphase fluid coupled with geomechanics in reservoirs, and modeling applications for unconventional petroleum resources. The book equips today's reservoir engineer and modeler with the most relevant tools and knowledge to establish and solidify stronger oil and gas recovery. - Delivers updates on recent developments in reservoir simulation such as modeling approaches for multiphase flow simulation of fractured media and unconventional reservoirs - Explains analytical solutions and approaches as well as applications to modeling verification for today's reservoir problems, such as evaluating saturation and pressure profiles and recovery factors or displacement efficiency - Utilize practical codes and programs featured from online companion website

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by four leading experts, this edition thoroughly introduces today's modern principles of petroleum production systems development and operation, considering the combined behaviour of reservoirs, surface equipment, pipeline systems, and storage facilities. The authors address key issues including artificial lift, well diagnosis, matrix stimulation, hydraulic fracturing and sand control. They show how to optimise systems for diverse production schedules using queuing theory, as well as linear and dynamic programming. Throughout, they provide both best practices and rationales, fully illuminating the exploitation of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. Updates include: Extensive new coverage of hydraulic fracturing, including high permeability fracturing New sand and water management techniques * An all-new chapter on Production Analysis New coverage of digital reservoirs and self-learning techniques New skin correlations and HW flow techniques

Book excerpt: Since 1983, numerous cooperative research wells and Staged Field Experiments have been conducted in the Travis Peak formation in east Texas by the Gas Research Institute (GRI). Many of the wells analyzed have exhibited slow fracture fluid cleanup. In these cases, several days or weeks of flow were required after the treatment before significant gas flow was measured. For these same wells, post-fracture pressure buildup data were often difficult to analyze with confidence using conventional analysis methods. As such, a research project was undertaken to better understand post-fracture production and pressure transient behavior. The objective of the research project was to investigate fractures that affected fracture fluid injection, fracture fluid inhibition and fracture fluid cleanup in wells that are completed in low permeability gas reservoirs. It was also important to determine which of the factors most affected the analysis of post-fracture pressure transient data and the ultimate gas recovery. Before these items could be studied in detail, however, it was also necessary to learn how to model correctly these effects by taking into account factors such as formation damage, fracture conductivity damage, non-Darcy flow, relative permeability hysteresis and capillary pressure effects. The result of this research showed that fracture conductivity must be high enough to allow proper fracture fluid cleanup prior to running a pressure transient test. If the fracture has not cleaned up sufficiently, the incorrect result will be obtained from conventional pressure transient test methods. Even if most of the fluid has been cleaned up, the results obtained from conventional methods should only be considered first order approximations. The engineer must then take these estimates and use reservoir simulation methods to history match the production and pressure transient data in order to better analyze the formation and fracture properties. The research also demonstrated that producing a well on a small choke after a fracture treament will maximize ultimate gas recovery. If severe crushing of the proppant occurs due to rapid pressure drawdown, then fracture fluid can be trapped in and around the fracture which will tend to suppress gas production and reduce ultimate gas recovery. In summary, the reservoir engineering research has led to the conclusion that multilayered, multiphase reservoir systems such as are normally encountered in low permeability rocks are difficult to evaluate with accuracy unless multiphase, multilayered reservoir models are used to history match all of the available data.

This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydraulic fracturing is essential technology for the development of unconventional resources such as tight gas. So far, there are no numerical tools which can optimize the whole process from geological modeling, hydraulic fracturing until production simulation with the same 3D model with consideration of the thermo-hydro-mechanical coupling. In this dissertation, a workflow and a numerical tool chain were developed for design and optimization of multistage hydraulic fracturing in horizontal well regarding a maximum productivity of the tight gas wellbore. After the verification a full 3D reservoir model is generated based on a real tight gas field in the North German Basin. Through analysis of simulation results, a new calculation formula of FCD was proposed, which takes the proppant position and concentration into account and can predict the gas production rate more accurately. However, not only FCD but also proppant distribution and hydraulic connection of stimulated fractures to the well, geological structure and the interaction between fractures are determinant for the gas production volume. Through analysis the numerical results of sensitivity analysis and optimization variations, there is no unique criterion to determine the optimal number and spacing of the fractures, it should be analyzed firstly in detail to the actual situation and decided then from case to case.
