Book excerpt: Space-based solar power has emerged as a promising solution for meeting the increasing demand for energy from sustainable sources. This research shows the potential of this technology by exploring a proposed system architecture of solar power stations in orbit around the Earth. These stations would collect and convert sunlight into energy and transmit it back to the Earth. The focus of this study is on spacecraft-to-spacecraft power transfer and the necessary guidance, navigation, and control considerations and the astrodynamics challenges that need to be addressed for the successful deployment and maintenance of this technology in orbit. A model is developed to understand the viability of spacecraft-to-spacecraft power transfer through the simulation of different use cases. While the potential benefits of this technology are significant, the implementation of such a system involves numerous technical hurdles. These challenges must be addressed and overcome to make space-based solar power a viable option for meeting our energy needs in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication satellites are a $144 billion industry. Is there any space-based industry that could possibly beat that market? 'Solar Power Satellites' shows why and how the space satellite industry will soon begin expanding its market from relaying signals to Earth to generating energy in space and delivering it to the ground as electricity. In all industrialized nations, energy demand is growing exponentially. In the developing world, the need for energy is as basic as food and water. The Sun's energy is available everywhere, and it is non-polluting. As business plans demonstrate its technical feasibility, commercial potential, and environmental acceptability, every country on Earth will look to space for the power it needs.

Book excerpt: A look at ways to collect solar power in space with satellites and beam that power down to Earth to supplement our other sources of electricity. In addition, this is a look at novel ways, to say the least, to construct those satellites. The witnesses at these Senate hearings envision a time when space will be the scene of bustling activity. They foresee construction of gigantic facilities that will provide the world with energy, which is an essential and increasingly costly part of our industrial society.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the design of new space missions and their use for a better understanding of the dynamical behaviour of solar system bodies, which is an active field of astrodynamics. Space missions gather data and observations that enable new breakthroughs in our understanding of the origin, evolution and future of our solar system and Earth’s place within it. Covering topics such as satellite and space mission dynamics, celestial mechanics, spacecraft navigation, space exploration applications, artificial satellites, space debris, minor bodies, and tidal evolution, the book presents a collection of contributions given by internationally respected scientists at the summer school “Satellite Dynamics and Space Missions: Theory and Applications of Celestial Mechanics”, held in 2017 at San Martino al Cimino, Viterbo (Italy). This school aimed to teach the latest theories, tools and methods developed for satellite dynamics and space, and as such the book is a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers in the field of celestial mechanics and aerospace engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satellite lifetime is often limited by degradation of the electrical power subsystem--radiation-damaged solar arrays and failed batteries. Being able to beam power from terrestrial sites could alleviate this limitation, extending the lifetime of billions of dollars of satellite assets, as well as providing additional energy for electric propulsion that can be used for stationkeeping and orbital changes. In addition, laboratory research at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has shown the potential to anneal damaged solar cells using lasers. This thesis decribes that research, preliminary work performed lasing a representative solar panel array, and a proposed Maui experiment to demonstrate the relevant concepts by lasing PANSAT, an NPS-built and operated spacecraft. The preliminary work done at Maui involved lasing a PANSAT silicon photovoltaic array using a 975 nm Yb:YAG source at output power levels of 7 W, 14 W and 21 W. These results matched those obtained under near-AM0 conditions atop Mount Haleakala (for the 7 W case) and extrapolated to match predicted output levels. Enough data points were collected at each power level to generate an I-V curve for the panel, identifying the open circuit voltage, short circuit current, and maximum power points. The efficiency of the panel varied from 13.1% (as expected for monochromatic light) at 7 W to 11.3% at 21 W due to uniform heating of the cells. These results represent a "ground truth" baseline from which further research can continue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels are, by their very nature, finite resources. There are, however, numerous renewable energy sources that should be taken advantage of. One of the most abundant is also the most difficult to produce on Earth-solar energy. This book explores the feasibility of a space-based solar power satellite. The book focuses specifically on the satellite design as opposed to the end-to-end design to include the ground segment. It explores the potential orbits for such a satellite to operate from and ultimately concludes that a geostationary orbit is the only logical location for an operational orbit. This book also focuses on two segments of the spacecraft: the solar array and the power transmission payload. The solar array area was calculated using the current best theoretical solar cells and assumed a 1 GW transmission power. Finally, this book explored which transmission payload to recommend for an operational system, concluding that a laser system is the most efficient use of space and weight. The final portion of this book was to examine the business case. Based on the design in this book, space-based solar power cannot compete with fossil fuels and likely will not for the foreseeable future.
