Book excerpt: This report presents issues associated with long-term aging of polymer modified asphalt cements (PMACs) as reflected by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) data. In this study a standard SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer) polymer modified asphalt cement containing 3% copolymer (PMAC) meeting LADOTD specifications for PAC-40HG and PG 76-22M was selected and subjected to accelerated laboratory aging. Procedures were developed for simulation of long term aging of asphalt binders using multiple pressure aging vessel (PAV) operations in the absence and in the presence of water. Three, five and seven year old field aged asphalt samples originally of similar PMAC composition as that of PG 76-22 listed above were recovered from a wearing course mixture located on interstate I-55 near Granada, MS. All binders were characterized with respect to their composition and rheological properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a report on the state of the art of research on the phenomenon of the aging of asphalt-aggregate mixtures. Compared to research on the aging of asphalt cement, there has been little research on the aging of asphalt mixtures. Binder studies are considered as well as mixture sutdies, the relationship between laboratory aging tests and field performance, and the relationship between chemical composition and field performance. Recommendations are made for aging procedures which show promise for laboratory investigation. Test methods to evaluate aging are also considered. It is noted that extended heating procedures show the most promise for short-term aging and pressure oxidation and/or extended heating the most promise for long-term aging.

Book excerpt: Asphalt pavement is subject to stresses induced by heavy traffic loading and thermal variations during its service life. Nowadays, increasing the permissible axle loads along with the impact of climate change have caused premature failure in the flexible pavement. Enhancing the properties of asphalt binders can reduce these distresses. Among the available options, finding a cost-effective alternative for improving the used binders is a challenge to overcome. Asphalt binder modification using nano-size materials has attracted attentions in recent years. Based on this study, nanoclays can improve the properties of asphalt binders, increase the resistance of asphalt to ageing, cracking and rutting, and extend the pavement's service life cycle. The objectives of this work were to investigate the rheological and mechanical properties of nanoclay modified asphalt binders and mixtures. The behaviour of a PG 64-28 asphalt binder modified with 2% and 4% concentration of two organo-montmorillonites was studied. Furthermore, the impact of using nanoclays was investigated in asphalt mixtures' performance. The nanoclays were mixed with the asphalt using a high shear mixer, and their dispersions were analyzed by employing a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) device. A SARA test was conducted on the modified and unmodified binders to examine the fraction composition of saturates, asphaltenes, resins and aromatics before and after the addition of nanoclays. Also, the neat binder and the nanoclay modified binders were subjected to short-term ageing using a rolling thin-film oven (RTFO) and long-term aged using a pressure ageing vessel (PAV). The following rheological properties of the asphalt binders were investigated: (1) High-temperature performance grading of unaged samples using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), (2) High-temperature performance grading of RTFO-aged samples using a DSR, (3) Intermediate temperature grading of PAV-aged samples using a DSR, (5) Low-temperature performance grading using a bending beam rheometer (BBR), (4) Two-piece healing test using a DSR, (6) Frequency-Sweep tests using a DSR, (7) Mixing and Compaction temperatures using a rotational viscometer, and (8) Mixing and compaction temperatures of modified asphalt binders using a DSR. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures that were analyzed are as follows: (1) Flow and Stability and stability test, (2) Bulk specific gravity test, (3) Theoretical maximum specific gravity on loose mixtures, (4) Fatigue and healing behaviour using a four-point bending test and (5) Dynamic Modulus test on Superpave samples. The results obtained from the high-temperature grading showed that the addition of 4% organo-montmorillonites increases the high-temperature grade from 64 to 70. Also, no change was observed in the low-temperature performance of the modified samples. The two-piece healing test showed promising results for nano-modified samples, with significant improvements in the initial healing proportional to the concentration of nanoclays in the binder. The Frequency-sweep analysis, utilizing a master curve, showed an improvement in ageing resistance by adding Montmorillonites. Furthermore, the SARA test results indicated that the nanoclay modified mixtures were storage stable. The asphalt mixture samples demonstrated, by repeated flexural bending using a four-point bending apparatus, increased stiffness and life cycles of the organo-montmorillonite modified asphalt mixtures.

Book excerpt: This research was conducted as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) A-003A contract at Oregon State University to validate the findings of SHRP contracts A-002A and A-003B with regard to aging. One short-term and four long-term aging methods were used to simulate aging of asphalt-aggregate mixes in the field. Four aggregates and eight asphalts for a total of 32 different material combinations were tested using the different aging methods. Results of the aging studies are compared with the A-002A and A-003B studies of asphalt binder or asphalt mixed with fine aggregate. This research concludes that aging of asphalt mixes cannot be predicted by tests on asphalt binder alone since results show that aggregates have considerable influence on aging.

Book excerpt: Ohio Department of Transportation has adopted the hot mix asphalt concrete containing polymer modifiers for use in the interstate highway pavement. Among the various reasons cited for the adoption of polymer modifiers are the favorable field experiences by ODOT, extensive literatures reporting enhanced performance, such as rutting resistance, low temperature thermal cracking resistance, and possibly fatigue endurance. However, despite these favorable findings, there are still cases involving premature failure of hot mixtures containing polymer modifiers. Concerns regarding optimum polymer content, compatibility between polymer additives and asphalt cement, proper mixing and compaction procedure remain to be resolved. Furthermore, performance based specifications to ensure production of desirable final asphalt concrete product require additional development. Questions regarding the suitability of Superpave binder testing procedures for the polymer-modified binders need to be clarified.

Book excerpt: Rubberized asphalt has been used to improve the mechanical characteristics (e.g., rutting resistance, fatigue life, friction, and skid resistance) of hot mix asphalt mixtures. The objective of this research was to investigate the rheological characteristics of the rubberized asphalt binders after various long-term aging procedures, using the penetration index, the dynamic shear rheometer, the bending beam rheometer, and high pressure-gel permeation chromatographic testing. The experimental design included the use of three binder sources, three binder grades (PG 64-22, PG 64-22+10 %-40 ambient rubber, and PG 76-22) and three aging states, i.e., virgin, rolling thin film oven, and pressurized aged vessel [four test temperatures (65, 80, 100, and 110°C) and five aging durations (15, 20, 40, 80, and 144 h) under the pressure of 2070 kPa]. The test results show that, as expected, the use of crumb rubber can effectively improve the PG grade and aging resistance of the virgin asphalt binder. A series of rheological properties (e.g., penetration, stiffness, m-value, and percentages of large and small molecular sizes) illustrate that the PG 64-22 binder, mixed with 10 %-40 ambient rubber, yields similar or improved rheological properties in comparison with PG 76-22 using 3 % styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer after various long-term aging procedures.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt binders used in asphalt concrete roadway pavements experience aging during construction and subsequently during their service lives. Aging is the combined effect of the evaporation of volatile compounds and the chemical reaction of residual compounds with oxygen. This aging affects the rheological properties of asphalt binders. The SuperpaveTM testing and specification system uses two laboratory procedures for aging of binders prior to measuring their rheological properties, namely the rolling thin film oven (RTFO) and the pressure aging vessel (PAV). These two procedures are used to simulate the aging that takes place during construction and during service, respectively. This paper examines whether the SuperpaveTM prescribed sequence of binder aging procedures (i.e., the RTFO followed by the PAV) is necessary, or whether similar binder rheological properties are obtained using the PAV procedure only. For this purpose, three binders were tested, namely an unmodified PG 64-28, an SBS polymer-modified binder of the same grade, and an SBS polymer-modified PG 76-28. The low temperature and fatigue rheological properties were measured by a bending beam rheometer (BBR) and a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), respectively. The findings of the study suggest that, with a few exceptions, the rheological properties measured after aging with the RTFO followed by PAV are significantly different than those obtained after PAV aging only.
