Book excerpt: Today’s wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology. Current trends indicate that in the future along with - crowaves, the millimeter wave and Terahertz technologies will be used to meet the growing bandwidth and overall performance requirements. Moreover, motivated by the needs of the society, new industry sectors are gaining ground; such as wi- less sensor networks, safety and security systems, automotive, medical, envir- mental/food monitoring, radio tags etc. Furthermore, the progress and the pr- lems in the modern society indicate that in the future these systems have to be more user/consumer friendly, i. e. adaptable, reconfigurable and cost effective. The mobile phone is a typical example which today is much more than just a phone; it includes a range of new functionalities such as Internet, GPS, TV, etc. To handle, in a cost effective way, all available and new future standards, the growing n- ber of the channels and bandwidth both the mobile handsets and the associated systems have to be agile (adaptable/reconfigurable). The complex societal needs have initiated considerable activities in the field of cognitive and software defined radios and triggered extensive research in adequate components and technology platforms. To meet the stringent requirements of these systems, especially in ag- ity and cost, new components with enhanced performances and new functionalities are needed. In this sense the components based on ferroelectrics have greater - tential and already are gaining ground.

Book excerpt: This book provides a broad examination of redox-based resistive switching memories (ReRAM), a promising technology for novel types of nanoelectronic devices, according to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, and the materials and physical processes used in these ionic transport-based switching devices. It covers defect kinetic models for switching, ReRAM deposition/fabrication methods, tuning thin film microstructures, and material/device characterization and modeling. A slate of world-renowned authors address the influence of type of ionic carriers, their mobility, the role of the local and chemical composition and environment, and facilitate readers’ understanding of the effects of composition and structure at different length scales (e.g., crystalline vs amorphous phases, impact of extended defects such as dislocations and grain boundaries). ReRAMs show outstanding potential for scaling down to the atomic level, fast operation in the nanosecond range, low power consumption, and non-volatile storage. The book is ideal for materials scientists and engineers concerned with novel types of nanoelectronic devices such as memories, memristors, and switches for logic and neuromorphic computing circuits beyond the von Neumann concept.

Book excerpt: In this paper we investigate the microstructural accommodation of nonstoichiometry in (Ba(subscript x)Sr{sub 1-x}Ti{sub 1+y}O{sub 3+z}) thin films grown by chemical vapor deposition. Films with three different (Ba+Sr)/Ti ratios of 49/51 (y=0.04 in the notation of the formula above), of 48/52 (y=0.08) and of 46.5/53.5 (y=O.15), were studied. High-resolution electron microscopy is used to study the microstructure of the BST films. High-spatial resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to reveal changes in chemistry and local atomic environment both at grain boundaries and within grains as a function of titanium excess. We find an amorphous phase at the grain boundaries and grain boundary segregation of excess titanium in the samples with y=0.15. In addition, EELS is also used to show that excess titanium is being partially accommodated in the grain interior. Implications for the film electrical and dielectric properties are outlined.

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) based ferroelectric thin film devices have been popular over the last decade due to their versatile applications in tunable microwave devices such as delay lines, resonators, phase shifters, and varactors. BST thin films are promising candidates due to their high dielectric constant, tunability and low dielectric loss. Dielectric-tunable properties of BST films deposited by different deposition techniques have been reported which study the effects of factors, such as oxygen vacancies, film thickness, grain size, Ba/Sr ratio, etc. Researchers have also studied doping concentrations, high temperature annealing and multilayer structures to attain higher tunability and lower loss. The aim of this investigation was to study material properties of Barium Strontium Titanate from a comprehensive point of view to establish relations between various growth techniques and the film physical and electrical properties. The primary goal of this investigation was to synthesize and characterize RF magnetron sputtered Barium Strontium Titanate (Ba1-xSrxTiO3), thin film structures and compare their properties with BST thin films deposited by sol-gel method with the aim of determining relationships between the oxide deposition parameters, the film structure, and the electric field dependence. In order to achieve higher thickness and ease of fabrication, and faster turn around time, a [grave]stacked' deposition process was adopted, wherein a thin film (around 200nm) of BST was first deposited by RF magnetron sputtering process followed by a sol-gel deposition process to achieve higher thickness. The investigation intends to bridge the knowledge gap associated with the dependence of thickness variation with respect to the tunability of the films. The film structures obtained using the three different deposition methods were also compared with respect to their analytical and electrical properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the high frequency world, the passive technologies required to realize RF and microwave functionality present distinctive challenges. SAW filters, dielectric resonators, MEMS, and waveguide do not have counterparts in the low frequency or digital environment. Even when conventional lumped components can be used in high frequency applications, their behavior does not resemble that observed at lower frequencies. RF and Microwave Passive and Active Technologies provides detailed information about a wide range of component technologies used in modern RF and microwave systems. Updated chapters include new material on such technologies as MEMS, device packaging, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, bipolar junction and heterojunction transistors, and high mobility electron transistors (HMETs). The book also features a completely rewritten section on wide bandgap transistors.
