This book was released on 2013 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEUP project #10-425 is analyzing the thermal fluid behavior of the gas flow between the prismatic fuel blocks within the gas cooled very high temperature reactors. Within the experimental setup there are two plenums with different entrance and exit geometries. This thesis is analyzing the flow within these plenums and recommending any flow conditioning required. A literature review of related previous research is included, primarily focused upon flow patterns through or past geometries similar to those expected to be encountered. The experimental setup for this thesis consisted of a clear acrylic assembly representing the two plenums of interest. The flow patterns with and without flow conditioning through these were imaged and analyzed. A CFD analysis of the flow within the plenums was also done. Based upon the findings from both the physical system and the CFD analysis, recommendations for the flow conditioning required for each plenum is provided.
