Book excerpt: The Mechanics of Threaded Fasteners and Bolted Joints outlines how threaded fasteners and bolted joints fail, how these failures can be remedied, and ultimately how to avoid them altogether through tightening methods, material strength, and avoiding loosening. The book demonstrates how to select the appropriate tightening method and determine the optimal tightening procedure for varying nominal diameters. Using the finite element method, it discusses characteristics of stress concentration and fatigue strength and covers bolt force variation due to elastic interaction. The separation of the plate interface via increased external force as the primary cause of fatigue failure in threaded fasteners is discussed, with effective countermeasures provided. Empirical equations of thermal contact coefficient and apparent thermal contact coefficient in simple form are included as well.?? Outlines various tightening methods such as torque control, angle control, direct tension, and thermal expansion Demonstrates methods for preventing fatigue failure Discusses the effect of high and low temperature thermal loads on the strength of bolted joints by looking at thermal contact resistance at the interface

Book excerpt: The reliability and stability of any bolted joint depends on the level and stability of clamp load generated by the tightening process. Hence, it very critical to understand the role of key process control parameters that affect the tightening process and also how in-service loads can affect the clamp load in a joint. This Ph.D. dissertation investigates the effect of key process control parameters like tool speed and multi-stage tightening on the torque-tension relationship, and discusses the evolution of the friction torque components during initial tightening and subsequent audit tightening and/ or breakaway loosening stages. It also presents a method to create a non-linear three dimensional finite element model which takes in to account the thread helix angle. Results from finite element analysis for the torque-only process control method are in good agreement with the torque-tension predictions provided by the Motosh equation. The presence of non-parallel contact under the bolt head is investigated, along with other process variables like friction, thread clearance, bolt hole clearance, and grip length. Novel methods to simulate bolt tightening process control methods like torque-turn, tension control and bolt elongation or stretch control and presented and discussed. To understand the effect of in-service loads on the behavior of bolted joints, the dissertation provides a study which utilizes a three dimension finite element model to simulate and evaluate the cumulative loss in clamp load in a bolted joint that is tightened beyond its proportional limit. The joint is subjected to a fully reversed cyclic load that is applied at the bolt axis or away from the bolt axis to capture the effect of eccentric loading. An extensive survey of the literature on process control parameters, finite element analysis of bolted joints and clamp load loss in bolted joints under external loads has been included. The results presented and discussed in this dissertation, provide valuable information that will help design a more reliable joint.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models to capture the physics of jointed structures have been proposed for over 40 years. These models approximate the behavior of the joint under carefully developed operating conditions. When these conditions change, the model has to be changed. Recent developments in numeric codes like finite elements have created interest in incorporating joint models into the design process but joint models need to represent the joined structure over a broader operating range. This work investigates the dynamic response of a structure with a joint. Isolation of a few dominant effects may give way to a model able to capture a broader operating range. To isolate the effects of the joint two specimens were created. A specimen that is without a joint serves as a control. The second specimen is geometrically similar and contains a double lap joint with a bolt fastener. The differences between the specimens represent the effects of the bolt. Control variables of bolt tension, excitation level and sampling time were chosen. Amplitude response and hysteresis curves were recorded. This data was used to examine the non-linear response of the bolted specimen. Qualitative observations are included. The control specimen shows little effect from non-linear behavior in the frequency response. The bolted specimen shows non-linear behavior in the frequency response. When the joint is introduced to the geometry the system drops in amplitude, drops in resonant frequency, and demonstrates a non-linear softening effect. As the initial bolt tension is reduced the magnitudes of these changes increase. In addition when the system is allowed to dwell with a single sine wave at resonance the amplitude of the response often increases. Hysteresis curves reveal that more than a softening non-linearity affects the response. The curve shows a softening affect when displacing in one direction and a hardening affect when displacing in the opposite direction. This may be affected by the geometry as the control specimen demonstrates a tri-linear stiffness. It is evident that previous joint models do not capture all of the effects observed. Additional research to link the physical cause to the observed affect will aid in adjusting or creating a joint model to be used in numeric codes.

Book excerpt: "Efficient joint designs are key to exploit the full potential of composite materials, which are being increasingly used in aircraft structures. Composite structures are traditionally joined by either mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding. Recently there has been a renewed interest in combining both these joining techniques despite the different stiffness of the load paths offered by the adhesive bond and the bolts. Certain designs have shown hybrid bonded/bolted (HBB) joints to possess higher static and fatigue strength compared to the individual underlying joints separately. This improvement in the joint behavior has been attributed to the substantial load sharing between the adhesive and the bolt. However, in these designs, despite using a low modulus adhesive, the bolt does not participate initially in sharing the load until the adhesive has completely yielded. Consequently, there is a need to improve this load sharing behavior in a HBB joint, wherein the bolt can start sharing the load with the adhesive as soon as the joint is loaded. In this study, a new design for the hybrid joint with an interference-fit bolt was conceived and investigated using a three-dimensional finite element model. This design facilitated improved load sharing between the bolt and adhesive. An interference-fit bolt HBB joint further offers potential to improve the joint behavior by limiting the plastic strains around the bolt-hole, increasing load transfer through friction and improving electrical conductivity in the laminates for lightening protection in aircraft structures." --

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The difficulty in developing bolted connection designs lies in the limitations in existing methods to characterize their strength and typically nonlinear response due to the complex interaction of the bolts and structural components. Yet it is necessary for the engineer to be able to determine the three main connection response characteristics: stiffness, strength, and ductility to account for their influence on the overall structural response behavior. The need for better connection response characterization becomes even more crucial in a performance based design approach or when designing partially-restrained moment frames. Several welded moment resisting frame connections were found to have serious failures following the 1994 Northridge earthquake leading to more interest and research on bolted connections as an alternative. In this study a refined three dimensional nonlinear finite element modeling approach to accurately simulate the response of bolted connections is presented. Sensitivity studies of modeling parameters are also performed. A nonlinear response dataset of over 400 connection cases is generated using this approach with a parametric bolted angle connection model. The use of a parametric Richard-Abbott type function and a neural network, calibrated using the response dataset, as practical tool to model the nonlinear stiffness response of bolted connections under monotonic loading is demonstrated and assessed. Failure criteria that can be practically used in conjunction with the refined three dimensional finite element models without any additional modeling requirements are developed. The stress modified critical strain (SMCS) criterion based on the void growth and coalescence mechanism initiating ductile fracture in steel is used for determining failure in the connection member. The bolt failure criterion developed is a mechanics based model using the elliptical interaction of the tensile and shear capacity envelope. The failure criteria and bolted angle response dataset is combined to assess in detail the impact of geometry and topography of the bolted angle connections on the following response characteristics: strength, initial stiffness, plastic stiffness, and absolute ductility or the displacement capacity. Finally, using the dataset of bolted angle connection response, along with their capacities and failure modes determined using the developed failure criteria, the prying strength models in the AISC LRFD Specifications, Eurocode, and a hybrid model are assessed and found to be very conservative for some cases. Based on these results a modified Eurocode and hybrid prying strength model is proposed which greatly improves the prying strength prediction. These prying models are assessed and verified using experimental data found in literature.
