This book was released on 1962 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present study is to investigate laminar separation at hypersonic speeds, especially as it affects aerodynamic control characteristcis. Theoretical methods for use with computing machines hae been developed for calculating the pressure distribution due to laminar separation of the free-interaction type upstream and downstream of the separation point. The theories account for effects of Mach number, Reynolds number, wall heating and cooling, and specific heat ratio and show significant effects of all these parameters on separation. An experimental investigation was made of flare-cylinder combination with extensive separation at Mach numbers 4 and 6, Reynolds numbers of 10(3) to 10(4), and for adiabatic and cooled walls. In general, the separation was not of the free-interaction type so that modifications of the theory are required to adapt it to this type of separation. Methods for making such modifications are discussed together with methods for computing hypersonic control characteristics for various cases of seaparated flows.
Book Synopsis AN INVESTIGATION OF HYPERSONIC FLOW SEPARATION AND CONTROL CHARACTERISTICS. by :
Download or read book AN INVESTIGATION OF HYPERSONIC FLOW SEPARATION AND CONTROL CHARACTERISTICS. written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonic flow separation and its effects on control characteristics were investigated analytically and experimentally. Included are conclusions drawn from extensive test data for hypersonic flows over 'basic' geometries and over 'typical' flight configurations with aerodynamic controls. The basic flow geometries discussed include: separation on flat plates ahead of ramps (flaps); flows over sharp expansion corners; 'breakaway' separation; and fin plate interactions. Force data and limited pressure and heating rate distributions are presented for the flight configurations for various trailing edge flap settings. As a supplement to this work, available sources of pertinent hypersonic controls data are tabulated.

Download or read book Development Design Methods for Predicting Hypersonic Aerodynamic Control Characteristics written by Z. Popinski and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design methods are developed for determining aerodynamic control effectiveness at hypersonic speeds along body surface. Pressure and heat transfer distributions in separated regions due to aerodynamic control deflection are described in terms of characteristic magnitudes and distance parameters by semiempirical correlations. The forms of these correlations are inferred from theory and experimental data. Using these correlations, pressure distribution in the separated region over a deflected flap is approximated and expressions for force and moment coefficients are determined. General charts are developed which present separation and flow parameters over a range of flight conditions for a typical hypersonic vehicle. Flow separation over a fin-plate configuration is presented using experimental measurements. Also, characteristics of flow over a flat plate, flat delta wing, and delta with dihedral are analyzed using visual flow records and pressure measurements from the point of view of two-dimensional flow. Applicability of the correlation expressions to separated flow on various configurations is discussed and calculated aerodynamic coefficients are compared with measured values.

Book Synopsis Numerical Study of Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Interacting with a Continuum Jet by : Christopher E. Glass
Download or read book Numerical Study of Rarefied Hypersonic Flow Interacting with a Continuum Jet written by Christopher E. Glass and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uncoupled CFD-DSMC technique is developed and applied to provide solutions for continuum jets interacting with rarefield external flows. The technique is based on a correlation of the appropriate Bird breakdown parameter for a transitional-rarefield condition that defines a surface within which the continuum solution is unaffected by the external flow-jet interaction. The method is applied to two problems to assess and demonstrate its validity: one of a jet interaction in the transitional-rarefied flow regime and the other in the moderately rarefield regime. Results show that the appropriate Bird breakdown surface for uncoupling the continuum and non-continuum solutions is a function of a non-dimensional parameter relating the momentum flux and collisionality between the two interacting flows.

Download or read book A Review of Hypersonic Flow Separation and Control Characteristics written by Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of high-speed flow separation and a review of available information pertaining to the effectiveness of aerodynamic controls for hypersonic vehicles are presented. Emphasis is on the problems associated with applying the existing information, which relates primarily to the low- supersonic speed range, to hypersonic flow situations. Sufficient detail is presented to allow this report to serve as a self-contained, introductory work on separation phenomena; available sources of specific types of control data are tabulated for ready access.

Book Synopsis Hypersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of an All-body Research Aircraft Configuration by : Louis E. Clark
Download or read book Hypersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of an All-body Research Aircraft Configuration written by Louis E. Clark and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted at Mach 6 to determine the hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of an all-body, delta-planform, hypersonic research aircraft (HYFAC configuration). The aerodynamic characteristics were obtained at Reynolds numbers based on model length of 2.84 million and 10.5 million and over an angle-of-attack range from minus 4 deg to 20 deg. The experimental results show that the HYFAC configuration is longitudinally stable and can be trimmed over the range of test conditions. The configuration had a small degree of directional stability over the angle-of-attack range and positive effective dihedral at angles of attack greater than 2 deg. Addition of canards caused a decrease in longitudinal stability and an increase in directional stability. Oil-flow studies revealed extensive areas of separated and vortex flow on the fuselage lee surface. A limited comparison of wind-tunnel data with several hypersonic approximations indicated that, except for the directional stability, the tangent-cone method gave adequate agreement at control settings between 5 deg and minus 5 deg and positive lift coefficient. A limited comparison indicated that the HYFAC configuration had greater longitudinal stability than an elliptical-cross-section configuration, but a lower maximum lift-drag ratio.
Book Synopsis Heat Transfer Measurements at Mach 8 on an Aerodynamically Controllable Winged Re-entry Configuration by : Lawrence Meckler
Download or read book Heat Transfer Measurements at Mach 8 on an Aerodynamically Controllable Winged Re-entry Configuration written by Lawrence Meckler and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer data were obtained at Mach 8 for a winged re-entry configuration with several types of aerodynamic controls. The basic model consisted of a clipped delta wing with an overslung cone-cylinder body. Most of the tests were conducted with partial span trailing edge flaps. The effects of tip fins, a hemisphere-cylinder body, a full span trailing edge flap, and a full span, plugtype, trailing edge spoiler were also investigated. The partial span flap deflection were varied between = 39 degrees in an angle of attack range of =20 degrees. Selected configurations were used to examine the angle of attack ranges of -30 degrees to -50 degrees and + 30 degrees to + 50 degrees. The major portion of the program was conducted at a unit test section Reynolds number of 3.3 x 10 to the 6th power/ft with limited comparative testing being done at a unit test section Reynolds number of 1.1 x 10 to the 6th power/ft. Book Synopsis Preliminary Report on a Study of Separated Flows in Supersonic and Subsonic Streams by : Dean R. Chapman
Download or read book Preliminary Report on a Study of Separated Flows in Supersonic and Subsonic Streams written by Dean R. Chapman and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some results are described of fundamental research conducted on various flow separation phenomena in two-dimensional streams. Experimental and theoretical results are described for the pressure rise across a reattachment region, and for the Reynolds number dependence of the pressure rise to a separation point. Observations are made throughout of the location of transition relative to reattachment and to separation, since this relative location turned out to be the dominant variable investigated.

Download or read book Viscous Flow Interaction Studies written by Robert H. Korkegi and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research was designed to gain understanding of the flow of air at high speeds over the components of lifting supersonic and hypersonic vehicles--wings, flaps, fins, inlets--and their interactions with respect to heating, surface friction, pressure, and aerodynamic forces. The objective was to help predict (a) flows on complex aerospace vehicle configurations in high-speed flight and (b) the location of areas of high heating. The research covers the areas of laminar and turbulent boundary layers, boundary layer transition, boundary layer separation, base flows and wakes, low density flows, three-dimensional interactions, viscous flow problems, and some flow measurement techniques.
