Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strengths of full size concrete airfield pavements were tested under static plate loads and under moving pneumatic tire wheel loads. In seeking to ascertain the effects in highly stressed concrete caused by occasional heavy wheel loads as normally characteristic of traffic on runways, the tests were carried to complete failure of the concrete. The slabs tested were 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 inches thick; 12.5 feet and 20 feet wide and all were 20 feet long with the exception of the apron series in which the slabs were 45 feet long. All slabs were of plain concrete except those of the apron which were lightly reinforced. Test data and results are given.

Download or read book Pavement Condition Surveys written by National Research Council (U.S.). Highway Research Board and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavement condition surveys are necessary to evaluate the effect upon pavement life and service caused by various factors such as subgrade soil of the various classifications, subgrade densification, subgrade treatments, subgrade drainage, subbase materials and methods of placing, pavement materials, pavement design, pavement construction methods, traffic, maintenance materials and methods, and climatic conditions. Pavement condition is logically measured for Portland cement concrete pavements by the condition of joints and cracks, condition of the surface, and the amount of cracking and breakage. In addition, it is logically measured for pavements of the flexible type by the amount of cracking, type of cracking, raveling, rutting, shoving, settling, bleeding, and the area and depth of patches. Skid resistance and degree of bumpiness are pavement condition factors for both rigid and flexible pavements. Various types of condition surveys are outlined and suggestions made for making them.

Download or read book Stabilization of Existing Subgrades to Improve Constructibility During Interstate Pavement Reconstruction written by Joakim G. Laguros and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) construction, geotechnical, materials, and pavement system design engineers, engineering geologists, and research engineers, and others concerned with the constructibility of new pavements over existing subgrades. The synthesis describes current practice for the stabilization of existing subgrades to improve constructibility during interstate pavement reconstruction. It presents information regarding the methods available to evaluate and improve subgrade conditions for the purpose of meeting the constructibility requirements of a reconstruction project. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of the state DOTs. The synthesis reports on: subgrade evaluation methods including sampling, laboratory, and in-situ test methods, as well as assessment of existing drainage systems; constructibility factors such as existing and proposed pavement types, available equipment, and cost effectiveness of various subgrade stabilization techniques; methods of subgrade improvement including mechanical and chemical stabilization, use of recycled and waste materials, the use of geosynthetics in reinforcement and drainage applications; and construction methods with an emphasis on innovative approaches such as novel sequencing of construction traffic, use of lightweight equipment, and robotics. In addition, several case histories describing applicable pavement reconstruction projects are presented. Finally, suggestions to possibly improve the practice and the identification of research needs are also presented.

Book excerpt: Pavements are the most ubiquitous of all man-made structures, and they have an enormous impact on environmental quality. They are responsible for hydrocarbon pollutants, excess runoff, groundwater decline and the resulting local water shortages, temperature increases in the urban "heat island," and for the ability of trees to extend their roots in

This book was released on 2012 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main issue associated with this research is if cheaper alternatives can be configured for subbase construction. Subbase layers have certain functions that need to be fulfilled in order to assure adequate pavement performance. One key aspect is resistance to erosion, and assessment of each of these functions relative to different alternatives is key to understanding the capability of different alternatives to perform adequately. In this respect, this project was poised to examine the design assumptions associated with each alternative and provide design recommendations accordingly to include test methods and material specifications. This report describes some of the work accomplished by summarizing data on subbase performance and testing relative to concrete pavement subbase and subgrade erosion but mainly addresses guidelines for concrete pavement subbase design. Findings from field investigations are discussed to identify factors associated with erosion. An approach to mechanistically consider the erosion process was introduced and review of current design procedures was conducted to reveal how they address erosion. This review was extended to include erosion models described in the literature as a means to shed light on the relationship between measurable material properties and performance. Additionally, past and current design procedures relative to erosion were reviewed in terms of test methods, erosion models, and their utility to characterize subbase materials with respect to erosion resistance. With this information, a new test configuration was devised that uses a rapid tri-axial test and a Hamburg wheel-tracking device for evaluating erodibility with respect to the subbase type and degree of stabilization (cement content). Test devices, procedures, and results are explained and summarized for application in mechanistic design processes. A proposed erosion model was validated by comparing erosion predictions to erosion results. Several computer program analyses were conducted to assess the design and performance implications of different subbases alternatives. Guidelines are p rovided to promote economical and sustainable design of concrete pavement subbases.

Rada and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 747: Guide for Conducting Forensic Investigations of Highway Pavements explores a process for conducting forensic investigations of pavements that is designed to help understand the reasons behind premature failures or exceptionally good performance. The process also allows for the collection of data for use in developing or calibrating performance-prediction models. The report includes example forms and checklists for use during the conduct of an investigation. These forms can be modified to suit the particular requirements and procedures for the agency. The example forms are included with the print version of the report in CD-ROM format." --Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted on a 1.1-mi. section of portland- cement-concrete pavement near La Plata, Maryland, to determine the relative effects of four different axle loads on a concrete pavement. The loads employed were 18,000 lb. and 22,400 lb. on single axles, and 32,000 lb. and 44,800 lb. on tandem axles. There were four separate test sections with trucks selected for each section to obtain the highest practicable rate of acceleration between 10 and 40 mph. on the existing road profile. Controlled-traffic tests were conducted from June through December 1950, soil and strain tests made in 1951. The analyses of these data, which included 6,000 soil tests and 12,000 strain and deflection readings, were completed in April 1952.
