The analysis considered the application of these ramjet engine concepts to the ARM 1 and ARM 2 air-to-surface antiradar missiles. Optimum ramjet engine designs were developed for each. Comparative missile designs utilizing both solid and liquid propellant rocket engines were made. Computer simulation programs were developed for each missile and propulsion combination. The mission performance of each was then determined by simulating typical attack trajectories. The results showed that the low-volume ramjet achieved, by a wide margin, the longest usable range in both missile systems. The solid-fuel ramjet failed by a significant margin to match the range performance of comparative rocket systems. (Author).

Book excerpt: "This paper summarizes the development of liquid and solid fueled ramjet and ducted rocket technology in the U.S. Applications of this technology to operational weapon systems, primarily the U.S. Navy's Talos and the U.S. Air Force's Bomarc surface to air missile systems, are reviewed. Subsequent development of air launched ramjet missile technology and associated flight test program results are also discussed. These latter programs highlight the U.S. development of the integral booster concept and sudden expansion combustion systems. In parallel with these missile system oriented programs, there was also extensive research carried on relative to the development of high energy boron fuels and supersonic combustion ramjets (Scramjet) for hypersonic applications. Much of the ramjet research and development activity reported herein has been plagued by cyclic swings in government research funds. Today, after extensive development in the late 1980's/early 1990's of the ducted rocket propulsion system for advanced air-to-air missiles, DoD funding is again unstable and could result in the disappearance of the last vestige of a U.S. industrial base related to this technology"--Page 1.
